Great steakhouse in Downtown boston. Service was good and Steak was perfect. The sides were average; but If I cared about side dishes, I would go to a Chillies. A serious steak lovers restaurant. more

Excellent service. Good food. relaxed atmosphere 11/27/2008

My friend and I went to Smith & wollenskys for Thanksgiving. My friend had the Thanksgiving prix fix dinner. I ordered off the menu. The service was excellent . they made you feel like a special guest. As dining room was half -filled, very little noise. My friend's crab cake was very tasty and fresh. Steaks are cooked well. Wine pours are average. Perhaps order a bottle. more

great overall 9/8/2008

The food is hands down delicious. My boyfriend and I started off with the split pea soup and the caesar salad. Although the salad was fine (I'm not sure how you can make caesar salad more than fine) the soup was really tasty. They also provide a cute garlic/herbed bread that is baked individually. We both had filet mignons, I had mine Oscar style and he had his Gorgonzola encrusted. Although both steaks were a tad bit overdone, we enjoyed them tremendously and loved different styling. He thought the Gorgonzola steak was the best steak he ever had. We also had a whipped potato and sauteed spinach accompaniments which were on the small side but decent as far as sides go. The desserts were fantastic (one of the best creme brulees I've had and a rich chocolate rich). We talked a bit to the sommelier about the wines and he ended up gifting us two copies of the Great American Wine Guide which was a very sweet gesture. The service was spot on and it made for a very romantic night out. Pros: food, service, wine list Cons: price more

Restaurant Week 8/19/2008

Have to say we felt like the trailer trash cousins invited to Thanksgiving dinner. No one really wanted us there but had to ask. Both the bread and the Caesar salad were a huge disappointment. We ate early so the bread could have been yesterday's and the salad was brown, under-dressed and flavorless. The fillet mignon was cooked to perfection and the Bearnaise sauce was excellent but that's about all I can say on the positive side. The hash browns, despite several warnings from our waiter about the intense heat of the plate they were served on, were luke warm at best and not at all crisp on the outside. The desserts were the biggest disappointment of all. The chocolate cake was very dry and the creme brulee was soupy and tasteless. The wait staff was neither friendly or rude, just ""there"" (although they seemed much more personable to the table behind us that was ordering off the menu) For the money, we will stick with Morton's. Pros: Steak was done perfectly, bernaise sauce excellent Cons: Rest of meal was poor quality; service was mediocre more

black sheep of the chain BUT!! 2/25/2008

i have to agree the the service is not what a top end steakhouse should be and of all the s&w i have been to this one is by far the worst BUT they do have the very best quality beef in boston and the food is always outstanding even if the service is out to lunch,i have to chuckle when i read that a lot of reviews state the beef is under cooked, they are serving dry aged prime beef here people! if it is cooked more than rare why are you paying the big bucks for it!! they always prepair my steak perfect (pittsburg) and they are one of only two steakhouses that always nail the cooking perfect(ruths chis is the other). yes they need to get new managment in there, but if you really are a steak lover and i mean REALLY know a great steak(if you order filet mignon or have your steak cooked more than medium rare you DO NOT QUALIFY AS A REAL STEAK LOVER!!!!)then you will be very pleased with your meal because it is all about the beef Pros: outstanding dry aged prime beef Cons: managment and service below par more

Poor service; so-so food 12/18/2007

I wasn't impressed with this place. The service was horrible, our waiter clearly didn't want to be there, and let that be known. We had a group of 10 people and the staff seemed annoyed to be serving us, rather than appreciating our business. The food was so-so. It took a very long time to get our food, and when we did- some of our steaks weren't cooked as we asked. Not a horrible meal, but certainly not worth the price. If you're going to spend money on a nice steakhouse, pick another one. Pros: got a reservation easily on a Friday night Cons: service, value more

Worst Restaurant Experience in Boston 12/9/2007

I made a reservation for 9:00p for my husband and I to celebrate his birthday. When we arrived we were told they were running 15 minutes late and to wait in the bar. No problem. We grabbed a drink and waited, and waited and waited. Every time we tried to speak to the hostess she would say she'd check and let us know. She never once got back to us. So, after waiting for more than an hour we left. We had absolutely no desire to eat an enormous meal at 10:30p at night or whenever they'd get around to us...and I certainly wasn't going to spend my money there. We went to McCormack & Schmicks across the street and had a fabulous dinner. Pros: There were none Cons: Over crowded, pretentious and rude. more

Truly disappointing 8/9/2007

I'd been looking forward to trying Smith & Wollensky since they opened in Boston, and my first (and probably only) experience was very underwhelming. I started with a Caesar salad, which had limp lettuce, stale croutons and an average Caesar dressing. The filet was undercooked and fairly tasteless - I've had much better at other steakhouses in Boston - and my husband's sirloin was equally undercooked, but had more flavor. They certainly weren't worth the premium prices. I'd eyed the huge slice of chocolate cake at a nearby table and ordered it, but unfortunately it seems to be an issue of quantity over quality. Most disappointing, the service was terrible! At one point, our waiter asked how the steaks were and I answered that they weren't great, and he just walked away. Pros: Nice space, good wine list Cons: Overpriced steaks, disappointing food, bad service more

Truly fantastic!!! 11/3/2006

I recently had dinner there with my girlfriend and had a great dinner/evening. Our waiter helped us with picking a wine which was exactly what we were looking for, and the food was absolutely fantastic. We were in a cozy booth and apart from it being a bit noisy everything was all we could have hoped for. Pros: Food/Wine list/service Cons: had to valet ( I hate to valet ) more

I love this place 11/3/2006

I wish I could afford to eat there every night. The food is exceptional and everything else falls into place. Pros: Great spot in the theatre district more

Awesome 11/2/2006

I think I could have died and gone to heaven without regret after eating the lamb chops. I been to all the steakhouses in Boston and I have to say I was impressed to say the least. Pros: The food is superb Cons: Very Loud more

Superb Food and service 10/22/2006

Better than G23 or Flemmings hands down. A little noisy but most busy steakhouses have that issue. If you want a table that is a little less noisy make sure you let the host know that and there are options as I found out first hand. Pros: Huge restaurant with 3+ floors, awesome food and well trained staff Cons: Noisy more

Everything was great 10/21/2006

I was reading through all these reviews and cant understand what these people are complaining about. I have had dinner at this place on a few different occassions and it is as good or better than any other place in Boston. Service was great and the food was even better every time I've gone there. Pros: All American Wine list with alot of hard to find gems Cons: Be ready to spend some cash more

not worth it 8/27/2006

i went during restaurant week, and it still wasnt worth it. tried two appetizers, neither of them very good. my steak was extremely undercooked, i dont expect that at this type of steak house. the people next to us got there after us, ordered after, and were done with their meals before we even received ours. bad service, and ok food. would not go again, definitely not when its full price! Pros: the castle is nice Cons: PRICE, absolutely not worth it more

delicious 8/25/2006

Went for Restaurant Week. What a deal! 10 oz filet cooked exactly right, delicious pea soup and giant piece of 5 layer chocolate cake for $30. Wonderful service best onion rings. Will go again on restaurant week. Cant afford it any other time. more

Dinner Date 8/7/2006

I was taken here by my husband for our anniversary. Ive always wanted to go in the castle because Ive just been curious to see what it looked like in there. I was very impressed when I went in. We were taken to a separate dining area which looked like a library. It was a very nice and private area. I ordered the Lamb Chops and my husband got the prime ribs. Along with those, we also got two sides each. When the food arrived, i was at awe to see how big the servings were. The two sides and the prime rib would have been sufficient for both of us. The lamb and the steak were very, very good, perfectly cooked and seasoned. The sides were excellent as well but we did not have enough room to pay much attention to them. Aside from the price, this is an excellent steak house and I would highly recomment it. Pros: food, food, food Cons: price more

Not worth it! 7/26/2006

My husband and I had a very sub-par restaurant experience here a couple of months ago. We ordered calamari as an appetizer, which was plentiful but boring. There was very little flavor, the pieces were soggy and I have had way better for much less. Next I order the filet mignon. I asked my rather uninterested waiter for it to be cooked medium rare, and I received an unedible, beyond well done hockey puck. I literally took two bites and couldn't eat any more. I ended up sharing my husbands somewhat better dinner. He had ordered filets wrapped in bacon. At least they weren't as dry as mine, although they were still overcooked according to how he had ordered them. You have to order sides separately, which adds to the steep price of your meal. I ordered a piece of key lime pie for dessert, which was very boring and uninspired. The only positive that I will give the restaurant is the location. It is very nice inside and interesting to walk around while on your way to the restrooms. Unfortunately, the decor cannot make up for the poor service and even worse food. For the price, you have many much better options within short walking distance. I will never go back. Pros: Decor and locale Cons: Food and service more
