Smiley's...just outside of the Woodhaven stop on the J train, is a treat for those who love to knit, crochet and "yarn project." Subtle and quiet, it's a fun atmosphere to go and explore. I went for a sale they were having and walked out with about twice what I'd intended to spend! They have a lot of yarns in a ton of colors. There are many imports that would retail at twice (or more!) the figure and they have an upcoming Manhattan sale that I'm drooling over (See the flier for the sale on their website).
When you walk in--you pick up a laundry basket. People buy in bulk here and they expect that. I wasn't pestered while I browsed through the rows of wools, touching everything and trying to imagine projects.
This isn't a hi-tech operation. They don't take credit cards at the store, so stop by the bank first. My huge order went in a Glad trash bag. But I can't imagine paying "retail prices" on imports like this and online auctions don't have the touch/feel option.
They have an online store I haven't utilized but I've heard GREAT things about--and if you know a yarn you like, isn't a bad idea. You have to purchase a minimum of $30 (not hard!) and it's $10 for shipping. Still, easily a savings...
Anyone coming with to the Manhattan sale?
