If only the seafood was this good at the beach 12/5/2011

Can't pass without stopping, I always get the fish sandwich and can hardly finish it. Great family enviroment. more

Overall a good experience 3/24/2011

A friend spoke highly of Skipper's so we gave it try. His recommendation was to try the Ipswich Clams. A bit of a disappointment, tasted ok but too rubbery. The clam strips however were the best I've had in the south. Got them as part of the combination platter. The accompanying fries and chicken tenders were very good. The hush puppies and cole slaw were also very good. Service was fine. No question that we'll be returning soon. more

Average at best 10/14/2009

I am a huge seafood lover. I've driven by Skipper's so many times and never tried it. Today was the day. With my free cobbler coupon in hand I ordered the Large Shrimp Onion platter (over $10.00) and a child's baby shrimp for my daughter. I was really pleased they had a drive thru. You call ahead first and then pull up and your order is ready. It took less than 10 minutes. But the good stops there. I got 12 large fried shrimp - good amount but they didn't TASTE like shrimp. All I could taste was the salty batter that had an old oil aftertaste. The onion rings were very disappointing. I of course let a lot slide because when you get fried foods to go they steam up and get limp in the car. HOWEVER, these onion rings were just bad. There was a TON of them, but it was the same batter and had the same bad aftertaste. When you order baby shrimp you get anything from medium to salad shrimp in different restaurants. Skipper's used the tiniest shrimp I have ever seen. They actually tasted like shrimp too. Hushpuppies round out a great fried seafood dish. We got TWO each. LOL Just as well. They were tough and you guessed it, tasted like old oil. I like my coleslaw to be creamy and crunchy. This coleslaw was watery and was chopped very fine and was like the kind of like ""Ruth's"" but not as good. Finally the cobbler - very wet, very slimy and very very sweet. This is not the worst seafood place I've ever been to, but I will not be going back. I bet the fish sandwich is really good but I would not get shrimp here. Pros: ""Drive Thru"" window Cons: Everything tastes the same more

The best fish sandwich ever! 5/25/2009

They have the best fish sandwich I have ever had! Our family loves to go there and get the fish sandwich. You can get combo platters anywhere but the fish sandwich and Lobster bisque cannot be beat! You can go all over NC and never find a sandwich like this one. When our family is in town we take them there and you should see their faces when the fish sandwich is placed before them! Pros: Great lunch price Cons: hwy 55 is busy more

Great lunch 4/7/2009

The couple times I'd been here before were at night, I wasn't aware of the 7 dollar plate they have at lunch.I got my big fish sandwich, and some baked beans. I would recomend it to anyone in a hurry, I was in, ate, and was out the door in about 20 minutes. Well worth the wait in traffic more

Big ole pile of..... 1/8/2009

SHRIMP!!! Saw their coupon in the neighborhood saver so I thought I'd try the place out. I've passed by the place a thousand times or so on the way to work. My wife got a two way combination plate, and I opted for the baby shrimp onion platter(HUGE!!). That peach cobbler from the coupon is one of the best we've ever had. We ended up taking two more home, one of which didn't make it into the driveway. Pros: Peach cobbler, LOTS of food Cons: Not going there sooner more

If you have some extra bucks give it a shot 11/28/2008

Its fried seafood and it all basically tastes the same. You have to be careful what you order because certain dishes are extremely small and others are quite plentiful. We usually get the white fish and baby shrimp and it satisfies us. It comes with a pile of fries, hushpuppies, and coleslaw but that still does not justify the price. Its the only seafood around really so if you have a craving go for it but you'll probably need a credit card. Pros: Nice selection Cons: Price more

Lived in Raleigh a month and eaten here twice 11/22/2008

We were here first for Cajun Wednesday. The gumbo was well prepared. I did have to add a little of the skippers seasoning, but it stands to reason that it wouldn't be a spicy as I usually make mine. They are selling it to a diverse public. I have had the shrimp, scallops, Oysters. and catfish and have been please with all. The fries are a little fishy, but kind of expected in a fish market. The tartar sauce was very good the cocktail sauce was average, but edible. I do want to get back and have the jambalya. I also think I saw an etoufee listed which I'll also have to try. Maybe they should make everyday Wednesday. I like the Pepsi they serve here. I've always find some resturants have a better flavored soft drink and this is one I like. I am seriously thinking about moving to the Apex area to make it an easy run to Skippers. Pros: They prepare the food well to my taste I have yet to be disappointed Cons: It is on the other side of town more

We're skipping Skippers next time 9/20/2008

Our family loves seafood and was looking forward to having some local takeout, especially after reading the reviews here. However, as much as I wanted to like it at first, the rest of the family didn't like it at all. I ended up trying everything they had to be sure and they were right, the seafood was just not good. \r \r Firstly, the portions are smaller than other places we've tried in the past, basically combo plates are a few pieces of seafood on top of a huge pile of greasy fishy tasting french fries. Secondly, everything tastes the same as if fried in the same oil together. The fish and scallops were barely passable, while everything else ended up in the trash unfortunately. Lastly, the sides were also disappointing - well over fried okra, greasy onion rings and coleslaw comparable to the tubs of cheap stuff in most grocery stores. \r \r For what you get for the price, which is fairly overpriced, you are much better off either going out to a regular seafood place or make you own at home. If you have to go, keep it simple, have a fish sandwich, skip the rest of what Skippers offers. Pros: Takehome bag smelled good driving home Cons: Food not good, tastes the same (oil), over priced, small portions more

Skipper me Flipits! 8/26/2008

I?ll start off by saying that I?ve never been to Steamer Tuesday or Cajun Wednesday at Skipper?s. This has nothing to do with the quality, authenticity of the food or my personal preference regarding that type of cuisine. I love Cajun food and most seafood for that matter. I may have even been to Skippers on a Tuesday or Wednesday when either of these events was taking place, but I wouldn?t have known. I?ve only ordered one item in the dozens of times that I?ve been. This is a conscious decision on my part rather than a problem to be resolved through medication. I was so happy to finally find a place that had a great fish sandwich that I did not want to risk tainting my opinion of Skippers. Their sides are good, but the fish sandwich is so good you?ll have an aneurysm. The fillet itself is huge and the bun is adequately accommodating. An appreciation must be given to the simplicity in which it is served to you - just fillet and bun. No presumptiveness on their part as to what you?d like served on it. There is a ?sides bar? to add on whatever you?d like to ruin your experience. (NOTE: hot sauce is the exception and is a well known scientifically proven fact to make everything better.) You can try something else, but why make an inferior choice and be labeled a bad decision maker? Pros: It's like an up-scale Long John Silvers Cons: It's like an up-scale Long John Silvers more

Wow! Great seafood, huge portions! 8/25/2008

I love this place! Not only do they have great seafood every day but they also have fantastic gumbo. Don't miss the Cajun Wednesday specials - they have red beans & rice and jambalaya. The menu is huge and the portions are huge. Very clean too...always a plus! more

I really tried to like it..... 7/22/2008

I had heard from someone several months ago that Skipper's was not worth the price and the seafood was not really good. I stayed away based on that and then I saw the WRAL info about it being a resonable and good place to try. So, I tried it. Oh my, it was not good to me. I ordered the fried scallops and I have to say it was the worst seafood I have ever had. The breading was coming off in chunks from the scallop and it was not tasty at all. Maybe it was a bad day for me to go or something else, but I can't say that I will be back. more

What you see is what you get... 5/19/2008

What you get is great tasting fried seafood at a good price. If you're looking for a step or 2 above fast food, look no further. We haven't dined in, but we've taken out on several occasions and we're always pleased. If you call ahead, they'll have your food ready, warm and waiting. Great for those ""Look at the time... what are we going to do for dinner?"" nights. \r Pros: Taste to dollar ratio more

Wildly tasty flounder, mouth-watering shrimp: run don't walk over to Apex and check this place out! 4/28/2008

Lightly battered fresh fish and shrimp, fried golden brown and served piping hot. Skippers Fish Fry is the best seafood in the area! The side items are wonderfully tasty as well. The decor recalls a no-nonsense Carolina beach restaurant The staff are all friendly and helpful, very kid friendly. We are looking forward to the Tuesday steamed seafood night soon. YUM! Pros: hot cooked to order seafood, good choices, fast friendly service Cons: steamed seafood on Tuesday only more

Great Seafood 4/19/2007

Undoubtedly the best seafood we have found anywhere in central NC. Not the fanciest place we have found but that is part of the charm. If you are looking for broiled or baked seafood you are out of luck. Skipper's is strictly a fish fry with the exception of Tuesday nights when they also steam some seafoods.\r Great seafood!\r Pros: Price, quality, value and food more
