THIS COMPANY HAS SCAMED ME
There is a vacant lot across the street from Newport Lofts located at
930-400 S. Third St., Las Vegas. For as long as I can remember, people have parked in this lot to visit the Law Office of James Dean Leavitt and visit friends in the building.
Recently Silver State Towing put a small sign in the middle of the lot that is not in the parker's line of sight nor can be read that states that you are not allowed to park there. The car was parked their like usual for no more than 10 minutes, when a tow truck was called to remove the car from the vacant lot. I ran to the car to stop the guy and find out why he was towing my car, when he informed me of the small sign in the middle of the dirt lot. I asked him if there was a drop fee, which is required by Nevada law and he said its my job, handed me his business card and towed my car.
When I got to the Silver State Towing located at 2400 S. Highland Dr., Las Vegas, NV I was treated with disrespect, told I was trespassing and was forced to wait outside until they felt like helping me. I was reading the fees on the window and it said that the charge was $165.00. When I received the invoice I was charged $240.00. They added a ""storage fee"" of $40.00 and a ""set out fee"" of $35.00. The sign also said that the $40.00 storage charge is for anytime in excess of 24 hours. My car was literally there at the impound yard for 15 minutes until I got there. After researching Nevada law this afternoon, I also found out that it was illegal for them to charge me this fee.
The sign in the window, which I took a picture of also stated that there is a drop charge of $100.00. Meaning that the driver at the time of pickup could have left the car for $100.00. He never gave me that option, especially when I specifically asked if such a fee existed. When I asked the lady who finally gave me my car back, she said that it is at the discretion of the driver to offer a drop fee. That is not what the Nevada statue says. The fee is supposed to apply to everyone.
I spoke with the secretary at the Law Office of James Dean Leavitt and the security guard at the front door of Newport Lofts and they both informed me that it was a scam and that there is a man that lives in the building across from the lot that is paid a kickback to notify the company when a car is parked there. Both offices informed me that this happens about 10 times a day to people and that there is nothing that they can do about it.
How is it that this towing company can randomly tow vehicles, charge whatever they want and get away with it? This was a total scam. It is
absolutely criminal and they should not get away with doing this to people.
