Editorial review from Citysearch 11/26/2013

I have frequented this establishment occasionally for the last couple years. Overall, food and service was great. (well, compared to the Denver Benihana anyways) However, during my last visit, things did not go so well. We sat at a normal dining table, not the ones with the grill. The host (who I must mention provided *EXCEPTIONALLY GOOD* service) ended up performing most of the (inattentive) waitress's duties. There was a period of roughly 45 minutes where the waitress was nowhere to be found. I ended up leaving a very generous (for the level of service) 10% tip.\r \r When the charge hit my credit-card account, I noticed that I was overcharged. Generally, I prefer call the restaurant to give them a chance to rectify the situation before calling the credit-card company, because sometimes that can lead to a ""black mark"" on their merchant account.\r \r I call the restaurant during non-peak hours (before dinner) and asked to speak with the manager. I got the third degree from whoever answered the phone. She was asking all sorts of questions that I felt were inappropriate (I didn't know if she was the waitress, which would have been a certainly conflict of interest here), such as: Who I am, what's my business I have with the manager, why am I calling at this time (???), etc. I politely explained that I am a customer and that there is a discrepancy on my bill, and I would prefer to speak to the manager to resolve this issue. She then proceeded to tell me in a very demeaning manner that he is very busy and doesn't have time for such issues. I argued with her for a bit and she reluctantly handed the phone to the manager.\r \r At first, he seemed genuinely concerned and indicated that he wanted to resolve the issue. He took my information down and said he would call me after the dinner rush. Never did.\r \r Next day I called again and the same person answered the phone, this time, flat out refusing to get me to the manager. At this point, I told her that he has an hour to get back to me before I call the credit-card company. I got a call back within 15 minutes. This time, he was very argumentative and disrespectful. Now he is playing dumb and claiming that he doesn’t see the problem. At this point, I ask again that the overcharge be corrected, now along with the entire tip to be refunded. If the waitress had actually done her job, I wouldn’t have to waste time fixing her mistake. He then proceeded to tell me that was way out of line because I only left a 10% tip (for sub-par service) and the waitress works very hard for her tips. I proceeded to inform him that “work” is the keyword there, and the absence of it. Instead, the manager insisted on arguing with me and lecturing me on the morale of perusing such a small overcharge, now asking rhetorical questions such as what my friends must think of me for perusing this. I informed him that theft is theft. Period. Plus, if you steal a small amount from every customer that comes in, it will certainly add up after a while. I also had to remind him that tips are not to be expected, and furthermore, it is *NOT* the customer's duty to make up for poorly paid employees, especially when very poor service is on the table.\r \r He made it clear that he had no intention of rectifying the situation, and clearly did not care about repeat business. Generally, I will give a restaurant a second chance, (after all, we are human and can have a ""bad day"") however, due to the manager and staff (excluding the host) being insulting and downright rude, there is no way that I will ever consider returning.\r \r It is also worthwhile noting that this is the second time that my credit card was overcharged on the tip at this restaurant.\r \r Bottom Line: Double check your credit-card/bank statement after visiting here!\r \r more

Poor customer service 12/17/2009

Great Food- Great Service 4/8/2009

Our family ate at Shinjuku recently and had a wonderful experience. The hibachi show was good and our waitress (Holly) really made it a very fun night. We had several special requests because of our younger children and Holly went out of her way to make it a special night. We will definitely come back again! Pros: Food quality, waitstaff will accomodate special requests Cons: A little pricey more

Fun atmosphere 1/18/2009

Let's state one thing straight off - any IDIOT that uses the old line ""customer is always right"" is usually a person who has a poor attitude or personality and justifies being a snob by that line. Pros: Well priced and entertaining. Cons: There are occasional fellow patrons who should be escorted out. more

Best fried rice and sushi in Aurora 10/13/2008

Okay, first off, I have to say, COME ON! If you need to use a coupon to pay for your meal, maybe you shouldn't be dining at the restaurant. It's not even that expensive. We've been going to that restaurant since it opened and we have become great friends with the owner and management. I am not biased by any means. The restaurant started off amazing like any other new restaurant. I do have to admit that the owners have grown a bit un-attentive, which, yes, has led to the quality of their food, customer service, and smoothness of the restaurant fall, but the food is still worth going for. Pros: Great food Cons: Some staff more

Average Food, Poor Customer Service 1/2/2008

We have visited Shinjuku at least 6 times since they opened. The quality of the food has consistently been pretty good, although pricier than similar Hibachi-style restaurants in the Denver area. In addition, the service in the past was normally average, although it typically seemed like they were trying to rush people in and out . Our most recent visit, however, was horrible, and if you want good customer service, avoid Shinjuku. They failed to honor a valid coupon, and then on top of that added on a 20% tip to our bill, when there is no such policy listed on their menu or signage. The assistant manager (who was also our waitperson) was unwilling to make any concessions, although she did finally remove the automatic 20% tip that was added on. The customer is supposed to be right, but in the case of Shinjuku, the customer was treated unfairly and they didn't seem to care if they lost a repeat customer or not. The food is above average for this type of restaurant, but the customer service leaves a lot to be desired. Pros: Food Quality Cons: Customer Service, Management more

Horrible Customer Service 12/19/2007

We have visited Shinjuku at least 6 times since they opened. The quality of the food has consistently been much better than the ""chain"" Hibachi-style restaurants like Benihana. In addition, the service in the past was always prompt and courteous. Shinjuku was a pleasant and unique addition to the numerous restaurants in southeast Aurora. Our most recent visit, however, was horrible, and if you want good customer service, avoid Shinjuku. We had 4 adults and 3 children in our party and we brought 2 coupons from the Entertainment Book online to use for a Buy One/Get One entree. Entertainment's policy clearly states that for group dining, you may use 1 BOGO coupon for every 2 people in the party, to a maximum of 3 per table. However, we were told by the assistant manager, Jayne, at Shinjuku that they would only honor one coupon for the table. This clearly violated Entertainment's policy. Reluctantly, we decided to have dinner there anyway, since we had always had good experiences in the past. When the bill arrived, we noticed that a 20% tip had been automatically added to our bill. When we questioned it and asked where it stated that they were going to add on a 20% tip, Jayne could not provide an answer. Her demeanor was argumentative and combative. Many restaurants do this for large parties, however, this policy is ALWAYS stated clearly on the menu or by the waitperson. In this case, she just decided to arbitrarily add 20% to our bill. Be careful of this restaurant. They seem to make up their policies as they go, and they are always in their favor. This is a big sign of a restaurant that is in trouble. When it comes to good customer service, the customer is supposed to be right. But in the case of Shinjuku, the customer is always wrong and they don't seem to care if they lose a customer or not. It's a shame because the food really is very good, however, it does not make up for the how they treat the people who should be the most important aspect of their business. Pros: Food quality and portions Cons: Poor customer service, bad management more
