An Exceptional Funeral Home 4/26/2012

Sheil Colonial Chapel in Raytown provided excellent service to me and my family after my mother died. All of the details were handled competently in a professional, respectful and compassionate way. They did not forget one little thing and went out of their way to help. I came from out of town and didn't have a rosary or small frames for several photos. They managed to find a rosary and mounted the photos in frames. When the church we had planned on using was already scheduled, they offered their chapel. The accommodations were perfect for us - about 50 people came. The surroundings were simple, rather than gaudy, home-like and inviting. My mother had purchased a funeral plan several decades ago. Everything she wanted was provided and there were no unexpected charges. I had not counted on an escort to the cemetery due to the distance and city traffic but the two provided were amazing! I highly recommend the McGilley Sheil funeral home to anyone who wants to provide their loved one with a beautiful, dignified service. more

All corporate!!!!!! 7/31/2008

Sheil funeral home is owned by the worlds largest corporation, SCI. Not the Shiell family! The corporation is based somewhere in the state of Texas. This corporations funeral packages start around $10,000. and go up from there. It is rumored that the staff is pressured to sell these packages and meet a quota per year or face losing their job. They are required to give a General price list out to anyone per state law who ask. Look at their prices then shop around and see how much money can be saved. Pros: One member of the family still works there as a custodian. Cons: The place is old and the furniture is horrid more

Sheil Colonial Funeral Home 4/22/2008

Sheil Colonial Obituary Response\r \r Recently I read an e-mail addressing the poor care they received at Sheil Colonial. I would like to respond to that letter.\r \r I have been the Pastoral Care Coordinator at Nativity of Mary Catholic Church in Independence for the past 12 years. My family has been in the parish for the past 30 years.\r \r Through my job I deal with most of the funeral homes in the area on a regular basis and Sheil frequently since they are in our neighborhood. In my personal opinion, working with Sheil has been a very positive experience. I find them very professional, compassionate and extremely competent. We have an exceptionally good relationship and have worked well together over the years.\r \r Many of our parishioners have been buried from Sheil and I have never heard of any complaints.\r \r When the time comes for my husband and me to be buried we will use Sheil and we have a prepaid funeral plan with them. \r \r I thank Sheil for their support of myself and our parishioners and am confident they will continue to do so in the future.\r \r Judy McCandless\r Pastoral Care Coordinator\r Nativity of Mary Parish\r Independence, MO\r \r Pros: Veru professioonal. more

The guided the process beautifully and gave much comfort during a terrible time! 4/9/2008

This situation is difficult to write a review about because everyone dreads it and there is absolutely nothing positive about it. Having said that, I'm happy to give Sheil's a positive review. After attending SEVERAL funerals at various ""canned"" chapels in the KC area, I was refreshed by the comforting home-like environment of the chapel. The most impressive part of the process was how smooth the Manager ran things. There were so many tasks to accomplish and so many details that a grieving family can't possibly think of or track, but it was never an issue. We received many compliments on the arrangements and how perfect they were for my loved one(s). I felt that they went the extra mile just to make us comfortable. The services I was involved with were substantially less in cost at Sheils, than the other two funerals I was party to this year. The other services were impersonal and lacked the sensitivity that the situation deserves. Sheils actually invites family members back for a ceremony around the holidays to honor loved ones who've passed. And, unfortunately, although it's difficult to actually pay someone during a terrible time of grief, this is a business and having it done right and honoring your loved one is priceless!!!!!! Pros: Intimate setting with a professional, family based business Cons: The process isn't fun at all! more

The best place to be in your time of need 4/9/2008

Sheil Colonial is the best in town, nobody wants to deal with these issues, but in your time of need I can assure you they make the experience a pleasant one. Unfortunately, I have had more than one occasion to deal with them this past year and I can assure you, they are the highest quality you will see in the business. My entire family has dealt with this organization for many, many years and their compassion, expertise and professionalism is unwavering. I have also attended other services where Sheils was NOT presiding and in no way, shape or form can you compare the quality - Sheils is far superior! You will never doubt that you are working with a first class organization, from the office staff to management, there is just no other. Their standards are extremely high and you, the customer, benefit from these high standards. Another reviewer stated that the facility was dirty and old, but perhaps you were at another funeral home, I have never ever witnessed this in my many visits to the facility, whether planning my loved ones services or attending a service, the facility was clean and comfortable. My immediate and extended family will not go anywhere else. Thank you Sheils for your continued quality over the years, it's nice to know you're there when we need you. Pros: I can put my complete trust in them Cons: Someone has to die for you to deal with them more

Victom of scam 1/21/2008

Much like the other gentelman who wrote in I to was scammed by this funeral home. My aunt had purchased a full funeral some time ago from Mr. Sheil paid in full. We made several attemps before my aunts passing to make sure everything was in orfder. To our supprise we discovered the outer container was not included nor the roses she had previously picked out. We were told we had to purchase police men to take us to the cemetery at a rediculas rate. We directed the funeral home to give us our money back so we could go to another funeral home a little more reasonable. We were told that could not happen becuase the money was not there anymore and all they had was just my aunts name saying they would do her service with bare minimun merchandise. Since I attend mass with the present owner I decided we would go ahead and not cause much fuss. To our amazement the gentelman neglected to meet with us or be present for us the day of the service. Talking with others this is not uncommon for him to act this way twords his so called parish family. I hope to never do business nor set foot in his establishment again! more

Sheil Funeral Home and their so called Dignity Service 1/16/2008

I would not recommend this funeral home to anyone. My friends father was buried there recently and it was a horrible experience. The funeral home was outdated and the bathroom's were a complete disasster with stains on the walls and soap all over the floor and cabinet. The entry way was clutterd with papers and someone else's flowers were on a table in the greeting room with that families belongings and pictures sitting on the floor. The funeral home manager was too busy craking jokes, down right flirting and talking loudly about inappropriate things with his woman funeral director to even care that it was time to play the music. I was told by the family who purchased a Dignity package that they had to pay up front almost 11 thousand dollars. Talking to another funeral director later I was informed they had been the victoms of a scam the funeral home calls a package. They were tricked into buying over priced merchandise mainly the upgraded vault and a book and memorial folder package which they had been charded $295. when an identical one would have cost about $50. Included in these packages are extras which you get for free if you can use them. Why can't a person just buy a funeral and not be tricked into all this useless junk anymore. The family was also charged for their father's death certificate to be ran with a car to get it. They later discoverd it had been mailed because their manager wanted to save himself the cost of gas so his bonus might be larger at the end of the year. I suppose this is why he didn't bother to wash his funeral home's car's that day either for the funeral. Our city has been more than generous and given that funeral home much business over the years. In the last couple ofy ears my family has attended many funeral's there and seen a drastic change for the worse in the last year. I would like to see a new manager who actually cares about this community. Please don't let yourself get scammed!! Pros: Used to be the best funeral home in town Cons: The staff all look like they just got out of bed more
