Awesome Pakistani - world class 3/25/2010

Friend invited us here because it was a new place and she had a discount card. Very glad she did because this is now my favorite restaurant, I think in the entire world.\r \r Been to india many times, eaten in fancy hotels and streetside stalls, and the food I've had at shalimar is on par with the best curry I've ever had. I was very surprised by the food here, it is simply awesome.\r \r This is ""high"" pakistani food, the rich northern moguli stuff. Every meal I've had here was brimming with roasted herbs and spices.\r \r There are 3 currys here that are each fantastic, but in order of awesome-ness:\r - balti goat\r - madras lamb\r - kashmiri chicken\r \r The balti-goat has goat on the bone, collagen in the curry. Meat eater's delight with a very rich red sauce. Amazing variety of spices with a game flavor.\r \r Madras lamb is tomato base, citric, goes well with the lamb.\r \r Kashmiri chicken has an almond base.\r \r I also tried the lamb vindaloo, saag paneer and a vege-dish, but they didn't stand out like the 3 I mentioned above.\r \r The spice scale is conservative here, so if you like hot food, you're safe to order ""very hot"". My kids (age 7-9) eat the ""hot"" without a complaint.\r \r Also of note, this place will serve naan, but they can also make batura, which is naan fried in oil like a dohnut. Not oily, it is amazingly soft. Two occations now friends declared it ""best naan"" they'd ever had.\r \r Only down sides to this place:\r 1) Expensive! I wish it was cheaper I'd go more often.\r 2) Where is the rich northern daal to go with my curry? They have a weak yellow daal which doesn't match the other food, need a proper daal!\r 3) Lunch buffet? A simple cut-down buffet? Please? Your food is so good but I can't spend $20+ for lunch.\r Pros: balti goat, baturas Cons: expensive, no buffet more
