Worn out.. 4/28/2012

Director Jeff does it again, and I mean not just in good way. The same opening act works only on new folks, and wonder why there is more new folks here than ever. (anyone w/ pager time to get cellphone, I make you repeat ""good evening"" because I like it, people wave over there - some smarter than others, ...so on..argh ) The whole setup is good, but only if it is your first visit. I give it one star for food. I was really disappointed to see the director do the opening act and play multiple parts in the show, ""Much ado about nothing"". There may be a good reason for it, as filling in for an absent actor, but it really puts a bad taste in mouth. The seats are not comfortable. Food and beer is always good :) To sum it up, if you have seen one show, you have seen it all..save your money for a movie night out instead. more

One of the best times to be had in Atlanta 9/8/2010

The Shakespeare Tavern is one of Atlanta's best kept secrets. It is a very enjoyable and inexpensive way to spend an evening. I have gone to everything for Shakespeare to Tennesse Williams and it is all good. The actors and the director have their own flair and their\r own way of interpreting each play and this adds to the fun. Everything isw relaxed, friendly and informal. more

We had a lot of fun! 6/18/2009

We went to see The Mystery of Irma Vep. I loved this show!! The actors were just fantastic. They were amazing with the quick changes and perfect comedic timing. The pianist was very impressive. We had a large birthday party at the Shakespeare Tavern, and everyone in our party had a ball. The Tavern is an awesome place to have dinner and bring friends or guests. Everthing we experienced was top notch. Pros: Excellent Actors and Production Cons: Parking was OK, just not as convenient as some venues more

Horrible Acting - Save your money & time 11/5/2008

A group of friends and I decided to take a friend here for her recent birthday since she had been wanting to go. It was the worst acting I have ever experienced. I've seen better acting/props/jobs done in high schools across the country. We didn't order any food, but after the quality of the production was well announced we decided against it. Toward the end it was hard not to laugh at how over-the-top these all too amateur actors were. more

Don't be soured by an unknowing reviewer 7/2/2006

If the previous reviewer knew anything about Shakespeare they would know that phallic references and other bawdy comedy was the norm. The majority of the Bard's audience was uneducated, so sexual jokes usually got the best reaction. Give the Tavern a second look, maybe the specific play wasn't to your liking, and if you don't want the food, they don't make you buy it-you can always eat before you go. Pros: actors are approachable, ambience, educational Cons: parking is a bit incovenient, food is good but a bit expensive more

not exactly 3/11/2006

All the reviews on here highly recommended this venue. I, however, was disappointed. We bought cheap seats, in the balcony, being but poor college students. We ordered our meal, and it was handed to us wrapped in plastic. Those two plastic-wrapped sandwiches cost us 17 dollars. Despite being let down by the food, we were ready to enjoy the show. Unfortunately...the acting was atrocious, over-the-top, and clearly aimed at an uneducated audience who had to know nothing of Shakespeare to enjoy it. It seemed as though the director went through the entire script and highlighted every word he could possibly use to make a phallic reference. If you are a lover of theater, and especially of Shakespeare, please, don't subject yourself to this insult to the bard. more

Good time had by All... 1/10/2003

Our first trip to the New American Shakespeare Tavern was wonderful. We got there early enough to have a front table, enjoy some good food, and have a cider (or two...) The actors were excellent and the play (A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum) was extremely well-done. Be careful of where you park, however, we parked in a non-suggested area and got booted (even though we paid). We produced the receipt and all ended well. Highly recommended visit for a theatre experience out of the ordinary. Pros: Excellent actors!, Good acoustics, Artful Cons: Parking... more

In love once again 11/14/2002

We went to the Shakespeare play ""All's well that ends well"" We ha a romantic evening. The authentic english food was terrerific. It was well worth the money! The actors were belivable and I fell in love once again with Shakespeare. A word of advice want to save a couple of bucks go on a preview night and its half the price! Would highly recomend. Pros: Electric, Cheep Cons: crowded more

outstanding 11/5/2002

I went to Mac Beth on Halloween with friends before we all went out for the parties. Everything else was a disappointment after that. The actors were wonderful. The play was quite moving. Action of swordplay. Touches of comedy. Drama I could actually keep up with despite the 'language' barrier. A highly suggested thing to do in Atlanta. One of the most awesome things I have done in Atlanta to date. I will be going again. You should too. more

Even Will Would Approve 10/16/2002

I went with a group of people and had a BLAST. The food was okay but the apple pie a la mode was absolutely DELISH. Fun evening and the quality of the production was surprisingly good. I've gone back several times for different productions and it has been consistently professional - including quite elaborate costuming. more
