A Wonderful Experience 1/5/2011

The Shade Hotel is an experience that everyone should try and more than once! It is located very close to the beach promenade and near many terrific restaurants. The rooms at The Shade are all unique. The lightening, jacuzzi tubs, the decor make each room feel special. The staff is not only processional but they go out of their way to make you feel as if you are the only one staying there. I would highly recommend this as a get away for that someone special in your life or even just to treat yourself. more

Trendy Hotel Close To the Beach 5/11/2009

There are not a lot of nice hotels in South Bay that are actually on or within blocks of the beach (Beach House Hermosa is the other great option). Keep in mind that Manhattan is hilly and you'll still have about a two-block walk down to the beach. With the opening of Shade a few years ago, there is finally a trendy, boutique destination that is not only close to the beach, but it serves up a great bar scene in its own lobby and rooftop terrace bars. Although it doesn't have an ocean view, the rooftop bar has two jacuzzis that are more for atmosphere than soaking, numerous heat lamps for cool CA evenings, and tasty mojitos. Pros: New, Trendy and Great Roof Top Bar Cons: Pretty Expensive, Can Be a Pickup Scene more

My Fav Place 4/17/2009

First of all, my girlfriends and I go to Shade all the time and we are NOT Cougars (mid-20's). Shade has a great selection of wine and martinis and we always meet cool people. Hope to c u there :) Pros: good looking people, tasty food & drinks more

SHADE ROCKS! 4/17/2009

Love this place! Great vibe to grab drinks and meet people. I would suggest trying one of the sub zero martinis. Pros: best martinis in town more

good service 2/8/2009

Service was good but little over priced. Food is moderate but too costly. Over all its ok. Pros: good ambience more

Friendly People and Great Food... what's not to like? 2/1/2009

I just visited the zinc lounge and had a Fantastic time! The food was delicious, my favorite was definitely the Ahi :) The drinks, well let me just say: Oh Ya! The drinks were um how do i put this, AMAZING. The prices were compariable to other bar and resturaunts of its type in the area and in comparison were well worth it especially since they offer drinks that are not only dangerously yummy but also Very Unique. I had a drink called the ""frozen orchid"" which was like nothing I had ever had before and was served in an amazing glass made of ice and the taste, lets just say my boyfriend has competition because I think I'm in Love! Plus, there was a good variety on their drink menu. Also, I happen to be a fairly indecisive individual and it took me a long time to decide on what I should commit to for my first drink..like 30 minutes and included an extensive interview with the bartender for suggestions.. and I really appreciated how friendly and knowledgable the staff was with helping me decide on the right drink..which as you know can be a big decision on a saturday night! To address other reviews i read: I noticed another review suggested it was a ""cougar den"" and only had older people. I just have to say I am in my mid 20s and I had a great time and found the people in the bar to be a fun group of people. I met some wonderful business men visiting from australia (some my age and some older) and had a fantastic and humorous chat w/them. Overall, I found that the ages varied, with a very nice sophisticated and friendly crowd (Besides who says just 'cause your older you don't know how to have a good time?? The older australian business man had more drinks than any of us!) For the record I am not an employee or in any association, other than that I take my eating and drinking experiences very seriously! overall I gotta say that I highly recommend checking it out, I will definitely be going back, saturday with my girls in fact, so hey maybe I will see you there! Pros: Great food, friendly knowledgable staff, amazing drinks, friendly crowd more

Very Affordable & Very Romantic 1/22/2009

The day after I got married we stayed at Shade on Sunday Night before leaving LAX to Hawaii for our Honey moon. In Hawaii we stayed at Hyatt Regency (4 Star Hotel)..but me and my wife agreed that Shade's Room was much much better than Hyatt. (Well, Hyatt has nice huge swimming pool and great buffet) Pros: Affordable, Very Romantic, Near Beach, 10 Minutes from LAX airport Cons: People working at Front desk need to be more friendly and willing to help right away, No good view from window. more

Best Romantic Hotel - Great for Honeymoon 1/6/2009

This place is simply awesome. I used to work for a very famous hotel corporation and none of the brands could come close to what this place has to offer. Pros: Amazing Amazing Romantic and Unique Hotel Experience Cons: Wouldn't Be the Greatest for Business Travelers more

Changes for the best! 10/9/2008

I had been to Zinc lounge a couple of times a while back, and always enjoyed it, how ever the 'cougar' den idea wasn't far off. Recently I returned on a Saturday to find the place filled with the younger, well-dressed MB crowd that I love. The menu has been changed too, the food has always been great, but now the new additions and dinner size portions make it even better- I'm slightly addicted to the ahi carpaccio and the new dessert menu will make any girl happy! (banana foster really did improve my mood!) The decor has always been super nice, a kind of modern beach vibe, and the couches are really great for hanging with friends if you don't want to sit at the bar. And the best part- they have these martinis that they serve in frozen ice glasses! Good food, nice atmosphere, hot surfer boys, and never a warm drink...I'm liking the new vibe! Pros: New food, new drinks, new eye candy Cons: if you want a place to sit get there before the sun goes down. more

Can't stand this place 8/8/2008

I can't believe there are positive reviews for this place. Do ya think one of the owners or managers wrote the other spectacular reviews? Maybe? Duh! Shade is the ultimate cougar den and any female under 35 is a Paris Hilton wannabe beyotch. Drinks are expensive and the bathroom is at the other end of the hotel. Yeah, the decorating looks cool but the people there [insert derroagatory adjective of choice]. Old divorcees, male and female, trying to relive the good old days. It's like high school with money and wrinkles. Ugh, hate this place. Oh, and by the time you have to leave (they close early), it's too late to get in anywhere. more

Shade hotel- we had a wonderful stay! 3/30/2008

This is a great hotel! I live in L.A but wanted to treat my husband to a birthday getaway, and found some great reviews for 'Shade' on this site. Having never forked out for a weekend away in the same city as I live in before, I was dubious about how much it'd feel as if I was on holiday. But it really did feel like a vacation. The best thing about the hotel is the rooms and its location. The rooms are beautifully decorated in sage and cherry wood, and the bed is large and really comfy. The bar has all kinds of glasses for different drinks and even a blender, so in the evening (to save money) we bought alcohol from the local VONS and made our own cocktails. The best feature of the room is the huge whirlpool bath, but coming in a close second is the fantastic lighting! You can choose to light the room various colors, and by pulling the Japanese screen across the bathroom (where the lights are) you produce your very own light show. It sounds a bit gimmicky but it's actually very relaxing and creates a great mood. Hotels can sometimes feel a bit clinical, but this one was very intimate and relaxing. The balcony was also nice. Location cannot be faulted. Practically next to the beach, there is a great French cafe right next door for breakfast and nice restaurants all around. It feels pretty classy but relaxed. There's also a 'Color Me Mine' nearby, where my hubby and I painted our own souvenir mugs! This is a great place for a romantic getaway...leave the kids at home though! Oh, one last thing! The staff are extremely helpful and friendly...always a plus! more

Cool Bar, Expensive Drinks 11/11/2007

I like starting the night out at Shade, but their drinks are a bit too expensive. The atmosphere is cool, as is the crowd except for the random old men who linger. If the deck is open, I recommend grabbing a drink up there-- it's more mellow than downstairs. Pros: Ambiance Cons: Prices more

Great boutique hotel feel 11/5/2007

Stayed here on a recent Saturday night to celebrate my wedding anniversary. The service was exactly what you'd expect of a small, boutique hotel - I ask for a bucket of ice at the front desk when I checked in and it arrived at my room 30 seconds after I did. The room was nice and spacious, with all the amenities. The staff was friendly and helpful and even called after we left to let us know we'd forgotten something in the room. The only thing that keeps this hotel from getting 5 stars is its pool, which is very small and located o the roof. But when you're only 4 blocks from the beach, it's an easy thing to overlook. more

Cute! 10/10/2007

Met some friends and had some early drinks here!....Fun! Cute...Awesome lounge......Go check it out! Nice location more

BEST HOTEL EVER! 5/9/2007

I've had the privilage of staying here and i must say it is the finest luxury boutique hotel in Los Angeles. The service is awesome and the rooms are even better, the Zinc Lounge is also a killer place to hang out. I reccomend it to everybody. It's Surrounded by great Restraunts and Shopping and it is all within walking distance of the Hotel. It is hands down the best Hotel experiecne i've had EVER! more

THE BEST HOTEL I HAVE BEEN TO!!! 2/2/2007

Stayed there for Christmas and it was a great Christmas indeed. The Romantic Getaway package is worth the price... The hot tub connected to the room was great... Pros: EVERYTHING WAS PERFECT!!! Cons: a little pricey, but you get what you pay for... try the romance package more

Awesome Awesome Awesome! 10/2/2006

This hotel is fantastic. Romantic, funky room, mood lighting, mini bar, blender, espresso machine, iron, hair dryer, and awesome service. The whirlpool tub is big enough for 2, or 1 looking to do some serious relaxing. The bathrobe was so comfortable, I took bought 2. The memory foam type bed and pillows gave me a fantastic night sleep every night, and it's so close to the beach, awesome restaurants (Petros right around the corner is NOT to be missed) shops and bars. I HIGHLY recommend Shade to anyone looking for a high quality hotel experience. more

Sunset Crowd - Beach Scene 9/21/2006

I went to Zinc Bar on a Friday for my birthday and had a great time with friends! We got there about 7:30 which is early by LA standards, but that allowed us to snag the last couch section. A lot of people watching to be done as the place filled up. It was like seeing the typical Sunset entertainment industry-esque crowd transplanted to usually laidback Manhattan Beach. The seating was intimate enough that I was able to chat with my whole group. The noise level does increase quite a bit as the crowd moves in. The tapas style food servings were very yummy! My favorites were the Lobster Rolls, Sashimi, and Burgers (1 of ea: sirloin, chicken, and seared Ahi!). Dont let the small servings fool you. The food will definitely fill you up. There is also a good drink menu. The Mojitos were good, although my boyfriend had one later in the night and they seemed to be running low on lime...and rum. The Zinc Pink was also fun. And the melt-in-your-mouth chocolate cupcakes are a Must Have! Pros: Food, Atmosphere, Location more

the hot spot... 5/21/2006

at least for now. friday and saturday nights can get rowdy @ the bar area. the staff here was great. As my gfriend and i were looking for a place to sit, the staff at Shade hotel allowed us to sit in a reserved area (since the reserved party couldn't make it). The bartenders and waitresses have always been kind and accomidating. parking is easy, prices on drinks and food were reasonable... a nice place to hang out on the weekend in the South Bay. Pros: service, prices, parking Cons: crowded more

Luxury Beach Stay 5/21/2006

This isn't your normal beach hotel. I live in the city and have put friends and relatives up at this very swank, yet cozy hotel. We like to nibble on the small plates at the bar and take in the surrounding shops and restaurants... its a great experience. The beach is three blocks away for summer swimming or winter strolls on the strand. more
