Great service, great food 9/16/2007

Great restraunt...attentive service staff, our visit here was early in April and might I say the waiter we had his name was Aaron if I remember correctly was well educated on all the aspects of the menu, and on the wine list. Definetly a great restraunt experience Pros: Great service staff, excellent wine list Cons: noisy more

Not the "best" as claimed! 8/10/2007

My husband took me here for our first year anniversary. For the amount of money that we spent it was not worth it because our waiter was very rude and not attentive. In addition we went with a couple friend and at the end we were supposed to fill out a form to get more events sent to us throuth the mail but we never received a thing yet my friend receives more invitations through the mail. Me and my husband felt like we were given second hand treatment. I would not recommend it to my other well to do friends! more

I May Be Being Too Kind 7/15/2007

This place gets a lot of good reviews, and a fair mount of poor ones too. I believe this is a factor of the transiency of food services... people come, people go, and it's really the people (employees) that are ultimately responsible for the impressions made upon the customer. For us, the impression was that of an overbearing and surly server, combined with a turned bottle of wine that Empire's so-called somallier was forcefully hesitant to accept as "turned". Our experiences with fine dining and good wine (literallly around the world) told us otherwise but, nonetheless, the somellier should have -- as a professional -- bucked up and gotten us a better bottle. After all, is customer service about arguing with the customer? Appearently, at Second Empire, it may well be. We'll give the place another try in a year or so (there are so many other places in the area now), and perhaps things will have improved. After all, it's all about the service, isn't it? more

The ONLY fine dining in Raleigh 5/31/2007

We recently dined at the Second Empire to celebrate our first wedding anniversary... and sure, there might be other restaurants in the Raleigh area with better service, or, even perhaps better food, but probably none that exhibit BOTH qualities so well... the balance of service and food quality / presentation was excellent at the Second Empire. Dinner was truly a fine dining experience without the pretentiousness typically associated with such venues. The food: the better half ordered the duck breast for the first course, I had the foie gras, which was incredible. Entrees: the lady ordered the Bluefin tuna, U.S.D.A. "prime" steak for me, which was perfectly grilled to medium, with a dark pink center. Chocolate souffle can only be described as "awesome". The portions were generous, which was a pleasant surprise. The service: the wait staff was courteous, prompt, well-rehearsed and knowledgable. They never interrupted our conversation, which of course is important to maintaining a romantic setting. We were also congratulated by all the wait staff for our "milestone", which although a small gesture, added a very nice touch to our evening. We look forward to dining at the Second Empire again for future occasions. Pros: Service, presentation, ambience Cons: no glaring "cons" more

Food Pretty Good but Random; Service Very Slow 4/23/2007

Charming atmosphere, feels more casual than the prices. The menu is much more extensive than the more formally appointed upstairs, but can be a little overwhelming as there does not appear to be much rhyme or reason to the menu choices- it's more like a smorgasbord of randomly assembled entrees. I have heard service was slow here, and it lived up to this reputation last Thursday night. We had to snag other waiters to help us for water, bread, the check, etc. as our assigned waiter was not really around. The place appeard 70% empty so we could not figure out the reason for the inattentive service. Pros: charming tavern-like atmosphere Cons: but at victorian mansion prices; also, hodge-podge food selection more

The Finest Raleigh Has to Offer 4/15/2007

I can confidently say that one of my best dining experiences was at Second Empire. I ordered the specials of that day, which was the fois gras appetizer and a filet mignon that was even better than the one on their menu. The waiter was very professional and accommodating and not at all snobby as I'd expected. The dishes were absolutely phenomenal. Everything on the dish was there for a reason and gave the dish a very balanced taste. The chocolate souffle was very tasty as well. I highly recommend this restaurant for any romantic occasion. I cannot wait to dine there again. Pros: Food, superb wine list, well-trained staff, and parking more

Great Service 2/23/2007

I had a great time during my business trip to Raleigh at Second Empire. Chad, Michael and their manager Jason were awesome. Drinks were served fast and carefully prepared. Wine selection is excellent and is not over priced(the part I liked the most ^.^). Chad is a very attentive professional bartender. Michael is quiet but an extremely efficient guy. Sometimes it is very busy in here so they can be preoccupied. Food is awesome and THE CHEF Daniel Schurr is amazing. I had a chance to talk to him and he was the most nicest chef with a passion for creating an art. He constanly thanked his staff for working hard and gave them credits. I am a very picky eater but the food here is simply amazing. Tuna Tartare is my favorite and is a work of an art! I think Raleigh has a great potential and Second Empire restaurant represents it. It is an expensive establishment to go to, but if you have a special occasion to celebrate I recommend this place for a treat. Having a great restaurant attracts people and it really helps economy too. Think of jobs and businesses associated with a great restaurant and its domino effect. Pros: Great service and excellent bartenders Cons: Parking is hard but you can find parking in a few blocks more

Creative Foods, Pleasant atmosphere 2/1/2007

The Second Empire features a menu second to none in the Triangle. Everything on the plate is there for a very specific reason, to compliment the main feature in flavor. I have enjoyed the Tavern/Atrium dining on a few occasions and prefer it to the Upstairs only because two menus are offered downstairs, a tavern menu and Upstairs menu. Undeniably, Dining in the main area, which is what I refer to by 'upstairs', is more romantic, and a bit quieter, but I like the menu options in the tavern. My only complaint is that I have seen some condescension from the wait staff, but this is not an 'every time' occurrence. Dine Upstairs for romantic purposes, as atmosphere rivals the Angus Barn, dine in the Tavern, preferably the Atrium if you are going with a friend to enjoy great food. Noise may be problematic on the weekend though... Pros: Food Cons: parking more

Overpriced, Snobby, 11/25/2006

The food was overpriced and undercooked. We could here the Chef using foul language from our table. The couple at the table next to us said it sounded like Hell's Kitchen The manager was a snob. Would not dine at this place ever again. Also, parking is very limited. more

BEST FINE RESTAURANT IN RALEIGH, ONLY ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 11/16/2006

I travel quite a bit across the country and sample fine establishments all over. Second Empire is a true delight in cuisine and atmosphere in this southern city. I love the Southern decor in an old traditional southern home. It is what I believe they meant when they talk about Southern Hospitality at it's finest. The food is exquisite and delicately prepared. The service was fantastic and the wait staff is extremely knowledgeable. Yeah! The wine list is fantastic and most complete for a restaurant, offering a great range of wines for any budget. I believe the prices are fair and adequate. Value wise I've had less for more. Frankly, I wasn't sure a restaurant of this quality would have enough business in a city like Raleigh. I was so relieved we didn't have to go to another steak house, called fine cuisine! There are great Steak houses but confusing them for fine cuisine? A steak only gets so good, no matter how you slice the Angus. So glad to see chefs with talent and creativity and enthusiasm. The Second Empire was a sight for sore eyes, in a gal that had been trapped in Raleigh far too long. Pros: GREAT ATMOSPHERE AND OLD SOUTHERN CHARM, GOOD VALUE Cons: You can bring a group, but don't. This one is better for just 2, or you'll miss it. more

Not bad 11/15/2006

The menu is impressive. Each time I'm there I look forward to the dishes I order. However I'm disappointed each time as they never are as impressive as they sound on the menu. They never meet my expectations. The meals aren't bad at all, just nothing much to talk about. Considering the high price, you don't get your money's worth as you can easily get a better meal somewhere else for half the price. more
