Raw Oysters without Cocktail Sauce? 2/14/2010

I was quite surprised when our oysters on the half shell were served. When we ordered the waitress asked if we would like anything else. I said I would like Tabasco with the oysters. She gave me a strange look. When the oysters were served, they provided three sauces, not one of them cocktail sauce, and no Tabasco, and no lemon or horseradish. I asked for cocktail sauce, the server acted is if they didn't have any. I told her to forget it. The oysters weren't bad with the sauces they prepared, but paleeze... I don't care how nouveau a restaurant claims to be, I expect raw oysters to be served the way the are at every other exceptional raw bar. Pros: Food came out very quick, too quick in my book. Cons: Overwork a standard seafood dish more

Food only decent, but too expansive for what it is 12/19/2009

There is nothing really special about the food. We ordered the linguini with shrimps as one of the entree, and you could count the number of shrimps.... they were very few. We ordered the tuna as entree as well and the taste wasn't refined. For starters, we had the octopus, which was just ok, but not great, and the mussels, which was very bland. For the price, you would expect more refined and interesting flavors. The atmosphere is great though. The service is really good. The place makes for a very pleasant evening. Too bad the food isn't more satisfying. Pros: Atmosphere Cons: Expansive food for only decent taste more

you'll enjoy your experience 2/12/2009

Beautiful space, Friendly service! 7/1/2008

I've looked at reviews on sites like this many times, and I've always toyed with the idea of writing a review myself. I guess it just takes either a very good or a very bad experience to motivate oneself... I was in Cue on Friday night with a good friend. We were honestly a bit worried that we would end up spending too much money by even entering the building. What actually happened kind of restored my faith in humanity--the economy is in the toilet, I payed $50 to refuel my tiny little car that very same afternoon--need I explain why sales people can begin to feel like sharks who smell bl**d (apparently I am not allowed by City Search to use that word with 2 'o's in it--I didn't realize it was a swear word), in the water? Actually our server was that 'Minnesota' kind of friendly--I instantly knew that she didn't want to rifle through my pockets for my last dime, which was enough to work the nervous kink out of my shoulder. In fact, we were surprised by the fact that there was a live jazz band setting up, preparing to offer us a free show! My girlfriend and I settled in to our cozy booth, and ordered a cocktail. After catching up on some long overdue gossip, we decided to try out the wine flight ""paired with the jazz music""--""big reds with big band,"" or something of that sort... The ""Wine Captain""--a very military-sounding, yet very friendly brunette woman--came over to pour the wines and chatted with us about them. Her enthusiasm was infectious, but please don't quiz me on what she told us--all I know is that the wines she poured for us were really good, and, yes, by gosh I even think they ""vibed"" with the music. We enjoyed our booth for quite a while, and felt completely comfortable even though we only ordered crab cakes (yum!), and an entree between us. Our water glasses were kept full, and we felt well-served (yet undisturbed), while we caught up on conversation and enjoyed the music. Honestly, the night was just... perfect. Pros: Ambience, Friendly Service Cons: hmm, in a perfect world, there would be free parking--but it's fairly cheap more

Poor Value 6/23/2008

Wow to say the least. An average space that is too airy and feels more like a cafeteria. I felt compelled to write to hopefully stop another smuck and his girlfriend from wasting their $100. Yes the service was stellar but the pricing on bottles of wine and champagne were ridiculous (cheapest bottle is $30 and you can pay a lot more for just 1/2 a bottle).....hmmmm? Pros: Good Service Cons: Poor Value more

Very Good Food, excellent customer service 4/30/2008

We visited on 4/19/08 at 7 PM. The service was excellent. Everyone who came to the table was very welcoming and courteous. We had the 7 course tasting menu. One person at the table had the Intriguing and Beautiful Wine pairings and another tried the World Class and Inspiring pairings. The food was very good. My date loved the Crimini - Ricotta Agnilotti, asparagus soubise, truffle oil. The taste was earthy and silky. The grilled scallop, carrot, ginger and beet was one of the best dishes I've had in a long time. The flavors complemented each other and yet each taste shined through. My only complaint, and it was remedied right away, was the lamp chop was served medium. I was just telling my date that I didn't want to eat overcooked lamb when the waiter appeared, announced the lamb overcooked, removed it and was back in moments with perfectly prepared lamb chops. It was seamless. I hadn't even mentioned it to the waiter. I was a little disappointed in the wine. Only one pairing, that was served with an apple and honey dish, was distinctive. The rest of the wines were just so-so. Maybe it was me but I felt it was the one area they needed work. All in all we had a wonderful evening and will return for another tasting menu. Cue is pretty but if you go while the theater crowd is there it's a little noisy and not very romantic. Once they left for the show the restaurant was quietier and I think they turned down the lights. Very nice and excellent service. Pros: Great Food, Excellent Service more

Great post-show happy hour 4/11/2008

My partner and I recently attended Jane Eyre (which was back by popular demand this spring) and enjoyed the late-night happy hour at Cue. The bar staff were a little slow, but I'm sure there is something of a rush right after the show ends. It was simply delightful to share the bar with a few familiar faces from the show. Exciting! more

Fantastic night out 1/2/2008

My fiancee and I dined at Cue for the first time last week and were blown away by the entire experience from start to finish. The ambiance was one of a kind - blue, silver, sparkley - exactly the kind of place you want to get dressed up and go to for a special night out. Our server was perfect, not over bearing but there when we needed her, and all of the other employees around seemed to have the same kind of welcomed attentiveness. We decided to try their tasting menu - a 5-7 course meal that the chef puts out every week and opted to add the flight of wine pairings that could accompany each course. The dinner was awesome, there was smoked artic char, a beet salad, black pepper pasta with duck, mushrooms, shallots, etc., a beef entree and a cranberry dessert. It was especially cool how the ""wine captain"" came by before each course with our next pairing and explained to us what he was pouring and why it related to our next dish. For what a great night out we had, it really wasn't too expensive - at least not anymore than anywhere else we would have eaten that quality of food at (I think our check was under $200 after gratuity and all). After dinner we got to walk around the Guthrie and take a look a look at the theatre, the great views from the observation deck, etc. which really made the whole night more than just a dinner. I will be back to Cue to try a new tasting menu in the future and recommend that anyone looking for the perfect evening out do the same. Pros: tasting menu, perfect service, get to visit the Guthrie as well more

The Staff was FANTASTIC 12/16/2007

I have been to the Guthrie Like 3 times and I always wanted to try out Cue but i never had enough time. I finally talked my boyfriend into taking me out so i made him take me to Cue. I have to say everyone in that restaurant was so sharp and attentive. There was not a beat missed. Our server was knowledgable, and fun. The manager stopped by like right away just to say hi. that never seems to happen any more you only see the manager when there is something wrong. Anyway the food was so yummy. and everyone was really nice i had a fantasic time. I would definatly recomend this place. more

Wow--and surprisingly comfortable! 11/6/2007

This was our first time dining at Cue. First, the obvious need not be said (it's a gorgeous room). Not so obvious--we loved our table, the chairs were positively cushy, and there was no noisy din that one would expect from a busy restaurant. Great acoustics, I guess. Both my husband and I loved our food--he had the pork chop, which was delicious (and the Chef is clearly a generous man--it was sizable), and my arctic char was perfectly cooked and served with a sauce that was positively addictive. Yes, they do indeed have some high-end wine that's expensive, but our $40.00 bottle was just perfect. Service was friendly and well-paced. Overall a very fun, delicious & yes Comfortable experience. We'll definitely be back. Pros: ambience, food, service more

Great fine dinning restaurant 11/4/2007

My husband and I dine out offten and have been to restaurants all over the world. This place tops our list! the service was right on point, the food was perfectly prepared and the we had a great table with a beautiful view. Pros: great atmosphere, fantasic service and wonderful food more

The demise of a great restaurant. 9/16/2007

I LOVED Cue! The food, service and atmosphere were all among the best in the city. What happened? The original chef is gone and the new guy came from a collage foodservice operation. The food is no longer inspiring and has been hardly palitable. The service was top notch. Now our favorite manager is gone and the service is dreadful. Why did they distroy my favorite restaurant? Go for a drink...eat elsewhere. Pros: A beautiful place. Great bar. Cons: Food and servie more

Be careful what you wish for... 9/8/2007

I wished, prayed and hoped for many years that the restaurant community would develop. I had no issue with expensive food, but I would expect the cuisine to be successful. Pros: Beautiful design, great romantic location Cons: High prices without good cuisine, bad service more

Rather dissapointed... 8/10/2007

I've been craving rabbit for a while now, and after doing a search for restaurants that serve rabbit, the Cue at the Guthrie came up. Just to be sure they had it, I double checked their website menu... Pros: Fast seating, interresting decor Cons: Food quality does not match food cost more

Eat Before Going 8/10/2007

The decor is absolutely stunning. I loved everything from the silver menus to the large pillars scattered across the dining room.. As you walk in, you pass the bar and waiting at the end of the bar is the hostess. I actually liked that the bar/dining area were seperated. There was a live jazz band that evening and immediately the atmosphere became very intimate, cool and relaxed. We were seated promptly and waited for the rest of the guests to arrive. We had a group of 15+, while waiting the staff seemed attentive with making sure we had drinks/appetizers. As the group got situated by 8:30, the thought of having ""attentive"" staff quickly diminished. As we reached 9:30, everyone started to wonder if the staff knew we planned to have dinner that night? Finally, the only visible waiter was flagged down but wasn?t able to help since we were not in his section so he said he would get someone to help us. It was not busy that night, aside our group, there were 2 other couples dining in front of the band. Our orders were finally taken by 10. 10:30 rolled around and nothing was served yet. I don?t expect a group of 15 can be served under 30 minutes but there was nothing that came while waiting for dinner. No salad, bread, nothing! Finally around 10:45, bread baskets came out. By that time, I lost my appetite. If it took 45 minutes to get bread baskets out, I couldn?t imagine waiting another 45 minutes for dinner so I asked my fiance to cancel our order and grab the check. While he wondered around the place looking for staff, dinner was finally being served. I immediately asked the waitress for our check to give her a head start. The risotto and asparagus was a weird yellow color but I decided to give it a try anyway, it was undercooked and COLD. To sum things up, we wasted 4 hours of our night waiting for NOTHING and then paying the added gratuity for the disappointing service. more

Abysmal dining experience 7/24/2007

Our experience: Pros: Nice windows Cons: Food and service more

Awesome atmosphere, average food 7/11/2007

Bummer because this place has just an incredible atmosphere, but the food is average at best. We were surprised because we had heard good things, but unfortunately I can't highly recommend this place. Go somewhere else before the show. Pros: awesome atmosphere Cons: below average food more

A great Friday night out at Cue 6/4/2007

A dear old friend of mine came into town from Chicago and wanted to take me out to dinner. He used to live here and wanted to try someplace new. He also recently got a promotion and had money to burn and while I suggested someplace in Uptown, he was curious about Cue. I made a reservation and we went. We arrived early and went up to the Target Lounge (the drinks and food were fine but the service extremely poor - the show had just started and it was dead which might have suggested better service but no) and then went to Cue. My friend talked me into the 5 course meal with matching wines for each course. Pros: Great service, Delicious food and wine pairings, Beautiful ambiance Cons: Maybe price? more

A truly lovely evening...despite the bad reviews. 4/17/2007

Usually my spouse and I look to Citysearch ratings as our primary guide when we decide where to go on special evenings out, but we both are glad we neglected to use the ratings this time. Our visit to Cue was frankly nothing like most of these reviews have described, and we were shocked to come here and find such mediocre to bad reviews. We found it to be a delightful evening - wonderful service, delicious food with nice presentation, and a fabulous location. To be honest, I tend to be particularly sensitive to snobbish service, and expect a bit of attitude at higher-end establishments, but I thought our service at Cue was truly friendly and sincere. Yes...it was expensive, but compared to other similarly priced restaurants in the Twin Cities, we found our experience at Cue to be among the best. We've made the rounds to reputable restaurants with similar price-points in the Twin Cities and Cue is certainly at least comparable, if not superior to them. Why Palomino receives a 9.3 and Cue receives a 7.2 is beyond me...I had a lovely experience at both restaurants, but Cue far exceeded Palomino in virtually every aspect. So to prospective diners, I guess my advice is to take these reviews and ratings with a hefty grain of sea salt and go ahead and make a reservation for Cue for your special evening out. Pros: Ambience, Service, Food Cons: Parking more

Snobby and poor customer service 3/16/2007

My boyfriend and I are Guthrie season ticket holders and tried the Cue 3 times (and never again!) The service is snobby (think your worst LA ""scene""...), slow, and unnattentive. The food is overpriced and we left hungry. Twice at the bar the wait staff had to be flagged down (there was not a huge crowd), and then proceeded to forget the appetizer order, as well as say flat out ""no"" when I asked for a 1/2 glass of wine (I only had 15 minutes prior to the show... you think they would know who some of the customer base is... much less the word ""guest""). Pros: view of the river; location in Guthrie building Cons: service, service, service more
