Is this Dr. Schoonmaker an older guy, and a GIANT and kinda goofy. Just wondering if this is the same Doc that I used 20 years ago. more

My 14 yr old son tried to kill himself 4 years ago. We had no idea he was at risk. Thankfully, the substance that he thought was poisonous, was not. We tried to find help, but the mental health providers were not able to see us on short notice. THANK GOD for Dr. Schoonmaker. His staff got us in immediately. We were whisked past a waiting room with many ahead of us. Dr Shoomaker took time talking to our son and us, we did not feel rushed. He was nurturing, but firm while talking to our son. My son did not want help at the time. But, now he looks back and knows that this experience and this doctor saved and changed his life. He is in college and a much wiser person. And looking at a future as a psychologist or counselor. more

What more could you ask for? \r \r Let me tell you. We moved to Arizona and just recenlty returned after being gone 5 years. My husband and I were both patients of Dr. Schoonmaker before we left. We tried and tried to find a physician that just even came close to Dr. S. We would find a doctor and as soon as we got comfortable they were either trying to change prescriptions, change dosages, or discontinue one or all completely. To say the least, it was very very upsetting. I would be willing to say that in the 5 years that we spent in Arizona we probably went through at least 6 or 7 doctors because of these various reasons. Dr. S. (w/out getting too personal) was the first physician to diagnose me and he forever changed my life. Because of his diagnosis my life has improved and is 100% better. I don't know how I survived before his diagnosis! Dr. S. changed my life for the better and he doesn't mess around and fiddle with prescriptions and dosages. He warned me of possible side effects of the drugs he was prescribing and was quick and extremely willing to change at any time. Most importantly, if you felt like the dosage was not enough he listened and was quick to assist with a higher dosage that might be more adequate. Unfortunately, we still live around 1.5 - 2 hours from his office and probably will not be able to seek his care. However, if we continue to have the same problems that we have in the past we may just have to make the drive. Because to us, thus far, there is no replacing the exemplary practicing that Dr. S. offers his patients. This is one doctor you don't need to second guess! He is the Best at what he does!!! more

Dr. Schoonmaker is amazing. He is very professional, extremely Christian and does not only sympathize but can also empathize with his patients. He is 110% non-judgmental and never makes you feel to be ""alone"" or ""crazy"". I am on medication prescribed by him and he meets with me weekly to ensure that I am receiving the proper dosage, care, prescriptions. His staff is wonderful as well. I will be with Dr. Schoonmaker until his retirement and I will continue to refer him to others I come into contact with that are in need of his services. HAD ME ON 5 DIFFERENT MEDS: cYMBALTA, XNAX, WELBUTRIN, RESTORIL AND SEREQUEL. i WAS A WALKING ZOMBIE. dEVELOPED TARDIVE DYSKENSIA AND HAD NEAR FATAL BOUT OF PANCREATITIS FROM THE SEREQUEL. SCHOONMAKER IS BEING SUED ALONG WITH ASTRA ZENECA ON THE SEREQUEL THING. I MISSED 2 APPOINTMENTS IN 4 YEARS. AFTER MISSING THE LAST ONE HE WROTE ME A LETTER OF DISMISSAL AND PUT ME ON TWO WEEKS NOTICE OF TERMINATING HIS SERVICES. HAD TO GO COLD TURKEY ON THE MEDS LISTED ABOVE - ALL HIGHLY ADDICTIVE, ESPECIALLY AFTER 4 YEARS. ALL REQUIRE SOME TYPE OF WEANING OR PHASED WITHDRAWAL. WITHDRAWALS SO BAD I ATTEMPTED SUICIDED TWICE, HAD HALLUCINATIONS, SEIZURES AND MUCH MORE. HE WOULDN'T EVEN TAKE MY PHONE CALLS OR REFER ME TO ANOTHER DOCTOR. HE'S A MANIAC. The Dr.'s staff is very accomodating. After calling (during an emotional crisis) to try to get in with a dr on my plan, Dr. Schoonmaker's staff was the only one to offer me an appointment with 48 hours instead of one month or more in the future. When it was my turn, he reviewed my very detailed and very long medical and psycological history, then spent more than an hour answering my questions. I left his office feeling optimistic about my future for the first time in months. VERY professional and FRIENDLY staff! Will definitely refer family and friends. Yes I have been a patient of Dr. Schoonmaker's for about 6 months now. I absolutely love the doctor. He is one of the only psychatrist in the houston area that actually cares about his patient's. He is one of the few that my husband and I have seen that actually takes the time to talk with you (not at you) and listen about what is going on. He doesn't have you come in and in 10minutes or less have you on your way out of the office with a handful of presriptions like most psychatrist do. Between my husband and myself we have seen close to 25 other doctors. We will continue to see Dr. Schoonmaker probably until he retires. We are very plesed with his care and understanding. One thing you may have to wait past your appointment time to see him but this is because he actually takes the time to find out what is going on with every patient and gaurenteed when it is your turn you will get tthe same benefit that the person before you got. He at one time had my utmost respect, however after practice manager LWar took over and hired me then fired me he released me from care with no written notice and no reason given. At one time in his career he was very talented however I feel makes bad choices on who manages his office and controls him. I feel like Dr Schoonmaker should retire.
