Dreadful, locals-only dive 1/20/2009

On Sunday, 1/18/09, at around 2 pm, my wife and I were taking a walk around ""downtown"" Cayucos. We figured we missed the lunchtime rush so we'd have our pick of any restaurant. Schooners, with it's rooftop dining and bar looked inviting. The day was beautiful and we hoped to have a tasty bite of seafood washed down with some great Central Coast brew. What a joke. As the small patio was completely filled up we walked into adjacent bar itself.. There was one table left in the corner. We sat down quickly, counting ourselves lucky to have gotten the last table in the place. There was some beer spilled on the table, which we assumed one of the three cute blonde waitresses would quickly clean up. Man, were we mistaken! I don't know what was up with this place. It seems like one of those local only hangs where you have to be on a first name basis with the waitstaff or something. Everyone looked like either a sailor, a biker or an alcoholic. Seriously. Maybe our LA-vibe turned people off but NO WAITRESS ever came by. I finally got up after about ten minutes of these bimbo-chicks happily refilling everyone's glasses to ask if we could get a menu, telling one waitress that we were seated in the corner. She looked startled like she couldn't believe anyone had the nerve to be so ""controntational"" and handed me two menus and an alcohol list. The food looked good BUT NO ONE EVER CAME BY. Every once in awhile the bartender would look at us with a smirk as if to say, ""you'll be waiting a long time, Jack"" and the waitresses seemed to be happily chatting with their biker boyfriends but NO ONE EVER SO MUCH AS WIPED OUR TABLE OR ASKED US WHAT WE WANTED TO EAT OR DRINK. We walked out after about 20 minutes. Funny me, I thought places like this existed to serve customers food and drink and then get money from them as payment. Or am I mistaken? Maybe there was some kind of voodoo that we were missing out on. Either way, I would recommend this place for LOCALS (or masochists) ONLY. Pros: Nice view of the ocean Cons: The worst customer service I have ever seen in my life more

Great day in Cayucos 12/13/2008

A Gem of the central coast! As we were walking along the beach looking for sea shells myself and my husband were starting to get famished steamers and oysters were sounding good to us . we asked some of the people on the beach where we should go for dinner they said cayucos has so many fine places to dine but if you want the best sea food in town go to schooners ,have cocktails on the patio and watch the sunset! after getting cleaned up we made it to schooners all i have to say is Try the ahi egg rolls , and there crab legs are to die for. my husband had the Filet beckett! more

Cheers! To Schooner's! 11/12/2008

We stayed in Cambria and we were told by our hotel manager to go to Schooners! My wife and I had the best Oysters and the largest scallops I have ever seen! We arrived around 7:30 there was a little wait so we went into the Lounge to wait and grab a drink. As we walked in I was amazed at the beer selection and the wonderful selection of Tequila...I was in heaven!! The service was great and the whole staff was so friendly. Hats off to Schooners! Cheers! more

Don't go out of your way to eat here... 9/21/2007

I'd like to write a review on the food at Schooner's Wharf, but we never got that far. My husband and I were visiting Paso Robles this weekend, and we wanted to get some seafood nearby and found Schooner's Wharf online We called ahead and asked to put our names on the list or get a reservation. The hostess said that it was first come, first serve. So about one hour later, after travelling down a long and winding road from Paso Robles, we walk in to the restaurant around 7:45 and the hostess tells us that the wait list is all full for the night -- there won't be any more room to seat people. At 7:45?? After we have travelled from Paso Robles to eat? Not cool. We got back on the road and travelled down to Morro Bay and ate at the Harber Hut instead. Great food there! more

Exceptional service, one of a kind ambiance. 1/12/2007

Sea food top notch, great selection and quality. Chef Chris Beckett's Ahi Egg Rolls are out of this world. Pros: Ocean front view from bar and patio. Cons: Beer and martinis to cold! more

Great atmosphere 11/17/2006

The food is great here, the ambiance is awesome. The resturaunt has an upstairs that overlooks the Cayucos Beach and Pier. A wonderful location for outside dinning durring good weather. The place is really low key, not formal at all, but the food is amazing and very creative. You are looking at spending about 14-29 a plate, and they do have a full wine list and a full bar, if you like to drink. They dont take reservations so plan on waiting a bit, but the bar is large and fun!! I highly suggest the ahi roll appetizers and the bacon wrapped filet!! Pros: Really tasty food Cons: No reservations so waiting is almost inevetable. more

Schooners was great! 12/26/2005

I visited Schooners with a party of six in December just before the Christmas weekend. This is off-season, so the place was practically deserted. We were seated immediately (we had reservation, though there was no need), the service was quick, though our waiter seemed a little inexperienced, especially with the opening of wine bottles. Most of our group ordered soups and salads, all agreed they were excellent. I ordered the steak, which was FANTASTIC! My girlfriends pesto salmon dish was also quite delicious. The ambience was also very nice -- cozy & clean, a perfect fit for this sleepy beach village. The wine list was short, but easy to navigate and rich with excellent local selections -- the ""Monster"" Zin was one of the best zins I've had. I highly recommend this restaurant, and will definitely be back on my next trip. Pros: Food, Atmosphere, Friendly Service more

Stay away, far far away 7/21/2005

This place was horrible, expensive and the typical tourist trap. I'm a Morro bay local and a couple of friends decided to join us at Schooners. We picked this place because citysearch rated it high. Ok from the top, the Valley girl that served us was annoying to say the least, my friends halibut was so dry you could use it for a hockey puck. When we complained the waitresses comment was classic ""oh would you like some sauce for that"" no airhead, we would like it prepared correctly in the first place. Cons: Bad service , bad food, bad place more
