Best

This is my favorite Austin Mexican Restaurant. The menu is unique, all the various sauces are outstanding, and the corn tortillas are the best I've had around here.

Austin's Best Interior Mexican Cuisine 8/2/2011

A tacqueria? I think not! These are the best sauces since Pinch a Pollo closed so long ago. There are a few dishes here that are not found at other restaurants or simply are prepared better here. Funky down home old Austin decor is a plus for me. And they know how to make a margarita also. more

Excellent!!! 6/12/2011

Have always loved this place. We go all the time. The chicken nachos are fantastic, he Puerco Pipian is a must and the Xoxti (spelling) soup is incredible. They have recently redone the inside which is nice but it isn't about the atmosphere for me there, it is the food which is delicious. They have an outdoor patio which is nice to sit on but sometimes loud as it is on Lamar. Parking can be tough but worth it. more

Very good at affordable prices.. 11/17/2010

Just got back to the office after lunch at Sazon. The lunch specials are reasonably prices. Tacos Al Pastor was good and the Salad Mexicana was exceptional with Spinach, toasted anchos and a light vinaigrette. Margarita rocks was 5 bucks and au natural with no sweet and sour. The only way to go in my book. Overall a fine dining experience. The other menu items looked great particularly the Conchinita Pibil and several mole and pipain dishes. This is one of a growing troupe of interior cuisine spots and it can hold its own against them all. Only challange was the parking, the place was only about half full and they were out of spaces. We'll be back. more

The Best. Period. 10/3/2009

OK, so if you can get past the lack of ambiance (unless you like dining al fresco on S. Lamar with exhaust fumes and screaming sirens) the food at Sazon is the best interior Mexican food in town. Everything I've ever ordered on the menu has been great, but my favorite things are the specials, which range from excellent seafood dishes to delicious enchiladas and more. I love interior Mexican food, and this joint delivers! Just don't expect much in the way of atmosphere. You won't find it here. Pros: Great Food Cons: Atmosphere? Nope. more

Authentic food 8/12/2009

The quality of the food seemed to be good, but the flavors were not what we were used to. It tasted more authentic than most of the other ""Mexican"" restaraunts that we frequent, but that was also the reason we didn't much like it. The service was a also on the slow side. Pros: Food Quality Cons: Flavors more

Where Everybody Knows Your Name! 5/25/2009

If you are tired of impersonal restaurants with mediocre food, come here! The place is super friendly, everyone makes you feel special, the food is amazing and the drinks are awesome. Yes, I love it here. It's my neighborhood hangout. Not your typical Austin Tex-Mex. Try it! Pros: Super friendly, amazing food, unmatched margaritas more

Best Authentic Mexican Food 4/23/2009

Try the cochinita pibil or tikin xic! This food is so ridiculously good and authentic I promise you won't be disappointed. Also, a wide variety of tequilas for the perfect margarita! Pros: Great food, happy hour specials more

SUPER GOOD AUTHENTIC MEXICAN IN CENTRAL AUSTIN 12/6/2008

MY BOSS RECENTLY TOOK ME HERE FOR MY FIRST TIME AND THE FOOD WAS JUST AWESOME. I LOVE THE ENCHILADAS SUIZAS. THEY ALSO HAVE GREAT SERVICE! I'LL DEFINITELY BE GOING BACK OFTEN! Pros: QUESO BLANCO Cons: NONE! more

Unbelievably good mexican food 10/19/2008

I cannot believe I found this place! The food is AWESOME! Steamed fish in banana leaves was savory, layers of flavors invading your senses, and I'm not exaggerating. Also ordered the roasted chiles recommended by a friend. It's the best stuffed chile I've ever had, and it's healthy because it's not fried. This place has opened my eyes to mexican cuisine. Service was also great. When I asked to try out their award-winning red sauce, the staff gave me a variety of sauces to try out. They seem to be really passionate about their food, which is a big plus. Pros: Cute mexican restaurant, great service, AWESOME food, close to Alamo drafthouse if you are planning a date night more

Fantastic real mexican food 7/10/2008

Everything I've had at Sazon has been fantastic. I grew up in Mexico, so I can vouch for the food authenticity. Try the pork in chile cascabel, it's amazing. Pros: Great food, great drinks, casual atmosphere Cons: It can get crowded more

Great food! 4/28/2008

This place is great! I love the pepian (sp?) sauce on the enchiladas. Also they have great margaritas. more

Austin's Best Mexican Restaurant (Best in the world!) 9/8/2007

My wife and I were traveling on vacation and happened to spend a few days in Austin. She likes or should I say LOVES mexican food. Trouble is she only orders chicken enchalada's. I went on line and broused Austin's best mexican restaurants and happened to chose Sazon's as it was number 4 and by habit I always go for number 4. The outside decor told us that this could be risky and it didn't look inviting. My wife also suggested we go back a few blocks and try a place that ""looked better"". Armed with my computer review I urged her politely in the direction of the front door. What was inside was a super clean and attractive mexican restaurant/cantina. I ordered the pork with green sauce and tortillas while my Mrs went for her favorite enchaladas. Our waitress was super friendly and at our biding suggested some delicious hor d orvores. My wife stated that the enchalada's were some of the best she had ever tasted. By then I had tasted my pork wrapped in one of the tortillas with the green sauce. I hid my eyes from the crowd so they couldn't see me weeping for joy! Quickly I offered the Mrs a bite and she stated in a stunned voice that this was the first time in her life that she had ever eaten anything and was salivating while she was chewing. We went back each day we were in Austin and actually drove out of our way from San Antonio to lunch there again. Would we go back. Only for a week at a time because if we went more there is no doubt we would be raising the average of everyones weight to the super obese in this country! Go there the price is right, the food is to die for, and it is super clean! Pros: Food Food Food! Cons: Don't take your first date there more

Excellent Mexican Food 5/11/2007

My husband and I have been to Sazon twice and had a great experience both times. I have tried the mole chicken and the cochinitas pibil, both of which were excellent. It is really hard to get a mole sauce right...I've tried it at a few other places in Austin and it's often not that great, but this place does it really well. My husband ordered the enchiladas & was very pleased with them. The food is cooked with great skill & a lot of flavor. They also have Mexican Martinis which are on a par with Trudy's, and that's saying a lot! The service is very informal, but it was friendly & attentive enough. There's nothing fancy about this place, and as the Citysearch review says, the atmosphere is kind of stark. The prices are reasonable. Overall, I would recommend this place very highly & I plan on going back many times. Pros: Food more

The food is just amazing! 3/3/2007

In an area over crowded with Mexican resturants Sazon stands out. The food here is to die for. My husband and I ate there for the first time a few weeks ago and WOW!! We had the Sopes to start with and I love the cornmeal patties. They are the perfect combination of cripsy and chewy. My husband hs the Cochinita Pibil and it was amazing. I ended up switching plates with him it was so fab! If you are looking for a place with amazing decor, then this may not be the place for you. But if you love good food, go and go immediatly. You won't regret it! It has become my favorite place to eat! Pros: Excellent food, low cost. Cons: Plain decor more

love it 1/29/2007

we love sazon! i've been to the many incarnations of this particular building and none compare to sazon's menu and service. it's no-frills but clean, and the food could compete with that of the higher-priced interior Mexican/South American restaurants in town. their mole is fabulous and i highly highly recommend the pollo al carbon. tortillas always soft and warm. killer sweet tea. margarito and staff are friendly and accomodating. get thee to sazon. Pros: flavorful food, cool south austin service more

Genuine Service 1/25/2007

Tonight was my first experience at Sazon. The food was phenomenal and the service genuine. Margarito, the owner, greeted all of his customers, most of them by name. If you're looking for flavorful, authentic Mexican food where you will be treated like one of the family, then this is the place to visit. Pros: customer service and minutes outside downtown more
