Best

The sauce box is a big glass room with all the liquor in it. Cute. They have a great happy hour, though I'm more impressed by the food than the staff. I'll keep coming back though...

Worst

I went to this place 3-4yrs ago and it was so disappointing that I wrote them off. Recently, my friends wanted to try this place and since I was the only one who's been there bef...

In my top 5 favorite Happy Hours! 1/4/2010

I love this place. It's best after dark, sitting in the dim candlelight, soaking up the swanky atmosphere and buzz, people watching in the big mirror above the bar. Then your food arrives -- everything is beautifully presented, tastes even better than it looks, and the happy hour prices are a steal. Does it get much better than this? Sure the staff can have an attitude, but that's part of the charm. Over the years as the bar and restaurant scene changes in PDX, I still keep Saucebox in my top 5. Pros: Atmosphere, food & drink Cons: Not so good for large groups unless you have a reservation more

Happy Hour 10/30/2009

I'd give 1/2 a star off for having a hard time finding parking yesterday, but not an option in rating system here. Everything else was easy and great. Hard to find a better deal in town. My favorite happy hour in town. Bartenders are very nice. Fun to sit at the bar and watch drinks get made. Pros: food, fun, prices Cons: parking more

Packed! 10/29/2009

I have never seen so many people packed into a bar! I went with a couple of friends, the dj was playing 80's music, the drinks were interesting and delicious. I love the tropical cosmo with guava in it. It became harder and harder to get a drink as the place kept getting busier and harder to get to the bar. Generally a memorable night but it would have helped to have a second bar or something on such a busy night. I really liked the place otherwise. I'll definitely be back. Pros: DJ and Tropical Drinks more

Great Sunday Night Out! 10/28/2009

It was a sleepy, rainy Sunday night, but the room, food and drinks made us forget about the gloom outside. I had the salmon which was perfect and my girlfriend, a light eater, had a couple of appetizers. She loved the tapioca dumplings. Just a great place to have open on a Sunday night. It is hard to find anything outside of a hotel that is open downtown on Sundays. Pros: Food and Drinks more

Horrible Experience! 10/17/2009

Fiance and I went to Saucebox, excited to try some new cocktails and get some dinner. We were seated promptly, got our drinks and appetizer as expected (appetizers were bland and tasteless). Then the long drawn out wait for the food occurred. After waiting 45 minutes we asked when our food would be ready. Our server actually told us that they prepare the food for the dining area before those of us sitting in the bar section. Apparently our money isn't as good as theirs. After several inquiries with our server, she said they were plating it up and it will only be a couple minutes. 30 minutes later (without any food) we told them we were leaving. Worse dining experience we've had. SBX=SUX. Pros: Zero, this place sucks Cons: Never received dinner more

I Love the Nightlife.... 8/18/2009

I'm getting older, I am not going to say how old, but this place consistently delivers a late night vibe that takes me back! I really enjoy the music and the drinks are some of the best I've had. I wish the late night menu was bigger but I've always enjoyed what I've ordered. The food is good. more

Darling Saucebox :) 8/11/2009

There are so many great restaurants in Portland that there is never a need to revisit one in the same year. I love eating out and trying new things but I have to say that my dark darling Saucebox, keeps me coming back week after week for the happy hour drinks and food. It is my preferred hangout because of the ambiance, food, drinks and most importantly financial accessibility. It isn't trying too hard but impresses anyone I bring with me. Other favorites of mine are Castagna Cafe, Cafe Mingo, Bluehour and Nuestra Cucina. Pros: Food, Waiters and Drinks Cons: Too close to Burnside more

Super Place, Great Food and VIbe 7/29/2009

We really enjoyed our dining experience. I had the salmon and my wife had the ribs. Both dishes were delicious. Great cocktail list. The place is dark and moody, music interesting. We will definitely be coming back next time we are in town. I was told there is late night entertainment. Looking forward to experiencing that and trying more of the cocktail choices. All and all a great evening. Pros: Loved the Salmon Cons: No Valet more

Disappointed 7/23/2009

I was totally disappointed with saucebox after hearing such great things about their happy hour. Their menu is pretty extensive and they have items grouped from $1 - $5. I ordered the summer/fresh rolls ($3) and superior noodles ($3) and their cocktail of the day ($5). Granted the prices seem cheap, but the portions are tiny. That would have been totally fine and at this place expected, if the quality was good, but I thought the dishes I ordered weren't even worth it when it came to quality and taste. You can get better rolls at any other thai or vietnamese place, probably the worst rolls I've gotten in a long long time. The noodles were okay, but they were served in a bowl and half of the bowl was the sauce, so by the middle to end of the bowl it was like eating soup and kinda gross. I won't be recommending or wanting to go here again. Pros: nice seating/atmosphere, attentive staff, free taro chips Cons: parking, cost, quality more

Great atmosphere, great drinks and food. 6/9/2009

I was joining some friends for a dinner/drinks to catch up with them. The waitress was awesome and had great recommendations (especially for some of those whom are picky eaters). The drinks are original and the food is very flavorful. I would recommend and go back again! Pros: Atmosphere, Drinks, Food, Service Cons: Parking more

Excellent flavor 4/19/2009

I was here once for happy hour and thought the appetizers were so good that I would like to try a meal. We finally had dinner here and were not disappointed. The food was excellent. The mix of ingredients and flavors were unique and absolutely delicious! Good selection of drinks (beer, wine, sake, cocktails). The wait staff were attentive and professional. We'll definitely be back. Pros: clean, professional wait staff Cons: have to enter through the noisy bar more

herbal bliss 4/16/2009

I just had the most amazing drink... A Goji Berry/ Passion Fruit/ Lime Drink called the ""Eternal Youth."" Apparently, Goji berries are full of anti-oxidants. Does that mean I can go in for cocktails at Saucebox and get younger with every drink? Nice! Pros: new herbal-infused cocktails more

Excellent Everything 3/22/2009

My husband and I have been to the Saucebox twice. Our first time was in Nov. '07, and I had the best crab cakes I've ever tasted. Craving those not so long ago, my husband and I drove to Portland to enjoy them again. Unfortunately they said their menu changes and they were not currently serving any at the time. Pros: Service, Food, Atmosphere Cons: Parking more

Saucy 3/19/2009

great night out. i was with a group of friends. we had dinner in the dining room then moved into the bar afterwards for couple, (if not too many) yummy cocktails. the food was delicious... an array of flavors that made me feel like i was on vacation somewhere warm. the cocktails were great... i have to say, the ""hi-ito"" (sp?) which was a hibiscus-infused-mojito-ish drink, was almost too good.... the perfect mix without being too sweet. i think refreshing is the best way to describe it. Pros: amazing food... Cons: tasty drinks could get you in trouble more

HOT CHEF/HOT BARTENDERS 3/18/2009

Everything that came to the table was fantastic. Loved the tapioca dumpings, the chicken, the salmon, the battered & fried spare ribs. Killer drinks too. Coconut lime rickey! Pros: Great Pan Asian Cons: The Halekulani Mai Tai made me miss Waikiki more

Still Love It After All These Years 3/18/2009

This place is always my fallback. It is the place when nothing sounds good, ""Ya, let's go there again."" I am always in the mood for it. Lots of ways to eat. Small plates from appetizer list or full dinner in the white room. The bar can get hectic sometims when it gets busy, but it is super fun to peoplewatch even if they are bumping your chair :( I can't tell you how many cocktails I've had here. So many occasions and nice memories. I love, love, love... Pros: drinks and food and room more

Fun scene, TERRIBLE food!! 3/15/2009

Ordered the tapioca dumplings to start, which, besides being bland and unexciting, were just plain weird in texture. (Think sticky Styrofoam-ish dough with chopped chicken bits on the inside). Pros: Trendy atmosphere Cons: Terrible cuisine! more

Great Service! 1/6/2009

This is a great place- good food AND service (a rarity it seems these days). Chic atmosphere, but very friendly. The wait staff (hosts, bussers, waiters, etc.) were all very attentive and worked well together to make the service very efficient. The food and drinks are good and cheap for happy hour! Highly recommended. Pros: service, drinks, food, economical Cons: none to think of! more

Fun spot 11/21/2008

Great music, tasty drinks, hip and fun spot to hang out, listen to music and chill with friends. more

Best Happy Hour 11/11/2008

Always great service. Their happy hour food is such a great deal. Try a famous blook orange drop - phenominal. Drinks aren't too sweet - always well balanced. Great time for a bachelorette party. Dinner menu is always amazing! Creative, delicious and always hot and fresh. Try the squid - flavors that are light and clean. Pros: Food, Service, Drinks, Ambiance, Everything! Cons: Parking can be difficult, get there early for happy hour or all tables are full by 5pm! more
