A pretty neat restaurant with great vegan options! 8/31/2011

The food was GREAT! Contrary to what others have to say about the aesthetic quality of the building/interior, I personally think that the kitschyness and vintage appeal work really well! It makes the restaurant stand out and enjoyable. There is always something to look at and the staff were so nice and easy to make conversation with. As for the food, it was great! Unlike most of the Vegan/Vegetarian restaurants I've been to, Saturn wasn't stingy with the portions that they serve. The meals were great in size and satisfied my vegan taste buds. The cupcakes and deserts were amazing and the brunch menu was to die for! If you're in the Santa Cruz area, you DEFINITELY need to check this place out! more

Nice vegetarian diner style restaraunt 3/14/2010

The service here used to be terrible, but it has greatly improved. Lots of different burger patty choices. Food is delicious. Open late. Pros: great vegetarian comfort food, cute tables Cons: a bit pricey for diner food more

Not good if you're super hungry 4/10/2008

My husband and I went to Saturn Cafe, drawn by the sign that said ""burgers, shakes and fries,"" not knowing that it was a vegetarian restaurant. We were really hungry after a lot of walking in the area. Even after looking at the menu, we couldn't tell that the burgers were meatless. I ordered a burger with no cheese. It was tasteless and thin. I've had Gardenburgers, and I think those taste better. My husband was very dissatisfied with his mushroom non-burger and was still hungry when we left. The mint-chip milkshake was good, though. Maybe the breakfast food is better, but I wouldn't even recommend this place to my vegetarian friends. more

Looking for the Lamest Restruant in California? 12/6/2007

Aside from the terrible dated 90's music played through the worst sound system on Earth giving me a headache, the disgusting ""art"" inside the glass tabletops, the unhealthy looking employees, the ugly colors that do not match each other, sloppy organization, disgusting cream of broccoli soup and their pathetic excuse for being a vegan restaurant that actually has nothing healthy and their trademark burger being lackluster this place isn't all that bad. I mean, it's not as bad as one of the waitresses in Zachary's down the street. Now, that is a woman I would give a tip of -15%!! Pros: The waitress from Zachary's doesn't work there Cons: Absolutely everything, including the price more

fun atmosphere 11/21/2006

I really like the design of Saturn (each table has a different theme), but I have yet to find something that I like there. The service is horrible. The employees are very nice, but seem to be moving on their own time and not the customers. I like that they have so much of a vegetarian selection, but the food tastes too bland for my taste buds. Pros: lots of parking; open late Cons: food is average more

Cool place, but bad food 11/17/2006

How could a health food place be bad? The service is borderline nasty and their meals never seem hot. I love the decor here though. I'm starting to lose faith in the Santa Cruz Dining Scene. Is there ANY good food in this town? Everywhere you turn, everything's organic! Surely there must be some good food, other than in Los Gatos! Pros: nifty place, cheap Cons: service, food quality more

Alternative 7/18/2004

Call me old fashion but when I'm in a restaurant I don't want to be served by over-tattooed, over-pierced, alternative/goth not motivated waiters. They all seem to be mad at the whole world. Be prepared for some 'anti-capitalistic' comments on the menu, anti-war slogans and an explanation why they prefer not to serve major (soda) brands.... The food is okay but certainly not worth the >9/10 rating found on this site. They have a lot of choice but I think there are better places in SC where you can find veggie food for a little more buck. Last note. This is more personal I think. I'm not into the whole metal/alternative/tattoo thing. So I never felt really comfortable with the whole atmosphere in Saturn cafe. Pros: veggie, parking, inexpensive Cons: , service more

Mediocre, at best 2/21/2004

I don't know what the fuss is all about. I've never been a fan of Saturn Cafe. I think it's great that they have all the vegetarian/vegan options, since I'm not a big meat eater, but I've found most of the food mediocre. The service has been consistently horrid - slow, unfriendly, everyone who works there looks irritated. I've had much better veggie food other places in SC, with much better service. Pros: Good french fries Cons: , Mostly mediocre food more

My favorite place to go when visiting SC 12/8/2002

Whenever I drive on down to Santa Cruz from the Bay Area, I always have to stop at the Saturn Cafe and get my Fakin' Bacon Cheeseburger fix. They are amazing! You can pick from several burger substitutes for this. Also try the Hibiscus Cooler -- this drink is delicious. Tart, fruity and very satisfying. The decor is great, too. Metallic cutout spaceships, stars and planets hang from the ceiling, sparkly red vinyl booth seats, and a photo sticker machine in the back so you can document your visit along with everyone else since the place opened by putting one of your stickers on the machine. The building itself is circular, probably a former 50's modern diner, now painted Something Green, and is a landmark as you drive down Laurel St. Go! Eat! Drink! Get a photo sticker! Pros: good food, fun decor, photo sticker machine more

Best Veggie Grub Ever 10/8/2002

Odd, I would hardly call Saturn a dive. Funky, hip, unique, fun, loud, laid back, expressive, yes... but not a dive. The decor is great featuring giant tattoo flash art, stuffed animals embedded in tabletops, glitter paint, flame lampshades, chairs painted with leopard print or stars and more. The food is tops, fresh yummy salads (this ain't no iceberg lettuce joint), soups, pastas... great fries (you pick, fat or skinny fries) and all veggie options for your burgers and sandwiches, except they do have tuna. Great milkshakes, smoothies, desserts, tea, you name it. Haven't had a bad meal yet. Service can sometimes be slow and don't go if loud music is not your thing. Otherwise, eat up! Pros: Organic, healthy, Creative environment, Fun Cons: Can be loud, Can be slow more

Out of This World 6/6/2002

I've been a fan of the Saturn for years -- ever since the Mission Street location. A lot has changed for this offbeat vegetarian restaurant, but one thing remains constant -- the food still rocks! The meatless burgers are good, as is the dinner menu at large. I think they're breakfasts are really the key thing here, though. Great egg options (and non-egg alternatives for vegans). Tasty coffee, too. Pros: great food, central location more
