So dissappointed... 3/12/2011

Being new in town I was told to shop at Sandy's for my salt water fish & corals. I was shocked that the man working there gave me the opposite information from what I've known in keeping salt water tanks for over 37 years. He advised me I didn't need the protein skimmer I had, (which I definitely do) how he managed to sway me to products instead of fish and corals I don't remember...they are like good/bad car salesman. I purchased 2 clowns and various coral...they all died. I took water samples back...nothing wrong there. They decided it must be something wrong in my tank however... Decipher that one? Nothing was settled to my complete liking. While I was there I looked around the store. The freshwater fish weren't much better. While I like the bird set up the large bird containment area is disgusting. It is dirty, moldy and smells horrible. There were 2 poor birds siting back on open perching areas and one of them was screaming for attention, to which he was being told to shut up. The small animal container was dirty and the puppy's had pottied in their area and were running around playing in it. You could tell from the smell they had Coccidia. I ask one of the cashiers and she denied it. A few minutes later my friend ask to buy a puppy (out of curiosity) she was told they were on a hold. I wonder why? Finally the 2 girls upfront decided who was gonna clean the mess up...and the unlucky one did it with much distaste. She had a very nasty attitude. My last few minutes in the store went like this...""You ready?"" Yes...""That's $$$$ How you paying for that?"" Debit...""here's your stuff"" mm yeah thanks...where's your manager? ""I don't know, why?"" Never mind... In final review...I will be looking for a new pet shop because I will never shop again at Sandy's. They are smart mouthed and rude, have a narcissistic attitude and my money spends just fine elsewhere. They need to clean up shop, take care of business and remember it is the customers that pay their checks. I don't know who owns this place but they need a wake up call. more

There fish are in poor health 7/28/2010

I started going to this store and loved it. It was the highest quality you could find. The last few times I went in 80% of the fish where sick and dieing. I'm talking skin and bones. Really sad and makes me sick. Bruce if you read these please get your house in order. Be the best at what you do. I know a fish or two may come in sick but what I'm seeing is neglect. Pros: Used to love them but last few times I went in fish sick Cons: 80% fish are sick and dieing more

Fantastic Store 6/19/2010

Sandy's is by far the best pet store I've ever walked into. I started keeping fish a couple years ago, and I haven't found healthier fish anywhere. I won't buy any type of livestock anywhere else. Their livestock is a little more expensive than chain stores (like PetSmart), but in my opinion you pay for what you get, and here you get very well maintained creatures. Departments other than fish are well maintained as well...reptiles are healthy and I buy my feeder rodents for my snake there. The staff is very knowledgeable and will assist you without pestering or selling you things you don't need. I've found that shelf items are very comparable to chain store prices. I'm in there at least once a week. If you become a regular customer there it's like walking into your best friend's house, it's a very welcoming environment. It doesn't get any better than Sandy's. Pros: healthy livestock, knowledgable staff, selection more

My first and last time shopping there 5/2/2010

I was in Sandy's pet shop sat. derby day 5-1-2010 cause my pet shop Exotic Reefs and Pets where closed. When I first walked in I found what I was looking for but the 2 girls that where working one was talking to a customer no big deal but the other one was just sitting on the counter while I stood in plain view of the rat, mice, gerbil setups and stood there for about 10 mins before I decided to point at her and say I need help, that was strike one :""NO customer in your place of business no matter how busy you are needs to be acknowledged that they are in the store"". The prices for all of the mice, gerbils, and feeder rats are way OVER priced That's strike two, They are priced at least 2-3 dollars higher than there competition that's right around the corner. and three well when I shop you only get 2 strikes all the people that gave this a 5 star must be used to poor service and must think by spending more on something that it must be better quality but in fact that they sell items that other pet shops carry and get them through the same vendors can't wait to get my pet shop opened up I'll offer one on one customer service with every purchase a fact sheet about their new pet and instructions to do more research on their own and well you'll have to wait till I'm open to the public to see my prices but can say they will be cheaper than most shops around. If your looking for a place to get some tropical fish or maybe a snake or two try Exotic Reefs and Pets they SPECIALIZE in this area where Sandy's could only dream of. Sandy's got about 36 bucks from me and will be the last time I'll go there. Pros: Clean, smell good Cons: Very high prices, and inexprienced staff more

Used to shop at Sandy's 2/1/2010

I started shopping at Sandy's because they used to be a good pet shop. I was warned that they were very pricey on their goods, but, they had good livestock. Well, a few thousand dollars later I have two tanks, two protein skimmers, two filters, and two way over priced lighting fixtures, all of which I paid about 50% more than I would have anywhere else, not to mention a lot of salt water creatures. Then two months after the purchase of a $180.00 light it went out and all of my corals were going to die. They didn't care, they had one sitting there are wouldn't trade me for it. My open brain coral is right now turning itself inside out for lack of light and I'm waiting on a UPS truck (several days later) to bring the replacement light. These are living creatures that I bought from them, they don't care about the pets and they don't care about the customer. Go spend more there if you want to, but, I'll never darken their door again. Wish there was a no star rating. more

Way to high in prices 9/7/2009

They Grab fish with hands instead of scooping them into a plastic container. Almost walked out but needed the perpermint shrimp to get rid of the Aiptasia on the Live rock that I purchased from them. Do not buy their Live rock. Has sponges Fire worms, Bristle worms , and the aiptasia which terminated several of My clowns before I found out what it was. Glass anemones are a bad thing. One of their staff also just told me to throw the fish in the tank, they don't need to be acclimated. I have a very hard time going there and have found a different store. Sandy's prices are unreasonable compared to internet and they will not match prices. I bought an item over a year ago from them . Went back to get it again and seems the prices had more than doubled. I guess they found out how good the product was and started to gouge people. 8.99 0n internet and 24.99 in store. Why such a big difference?? They are definitly not the store they were years ago. They need to straighten out there ways or go out of business. Don't have the crowd they use to. Pros: Clean shop Cons: Unknowledgable Staff on duty at times on saltwater fish. more

AWEFUL PET STORE 1/3/2009

Iwas in there today. There marine tanks are full of aptasia. There service is aweful and their prices are outrageous. Neverless I bought some small hermitcrabs and snails for my marine tank. The sales staff knows very little about what they are doing and were sticking their barehands in the tank to remove livestock. I asked for some extra shells for the tiny herrmits. They brought out a bucket i pulled out a handful 20 or so and they said they were a 1$ a piece. Any decent LFS would had gladly given them to me. Management was unavailable to discuss any of this with me. more

Best Pet Shop In Town 10/22/2008

I am here to say, when we arrived here from Florida we were met with one disappointment after another when it came to pet shops. Until we found SANDY'S PET SHOP Hers is absolutely the best and the cleanest and well maintained we have found since we have been in KY. We are from a state where all Pet shops are regulated by the Florida fish and wild life commission. Where I was a licensed bird breeder. I still breed birds and I have to say the only place I will deal with here until I find another comparable place is Sandy's! Pros: Clean, Friendly, Service, Great selection,Well Maintained, Animals well cared for more

Curious 11/4/2005

Actually I was just curious about this place. I have heard friends talk about this and they were right. It is a nice place to buy supplies. I really liked the fact that they were very clean and very organized. The salesperson let me browse without trying to get me to buy something. I did eventually buy a toy for my pet, and was not disappointed. I wish more places were like this as far as the animals go. Very friendly place. more

Fun place to shop 6/26/2005

I really love going to Sandys pet shop they have the best selection I have seen in Louisville for exotic pets. They can be quite pricey on cages and pet food items. But they only sell high quality items and they have a great selection of items for animals. My kids love going there to see the exotic parrots and puppies they have for sale. PROS: Great selection CONS: Pricey more

MS. 9/28/2004

I can't tell you how amazingly clean this place is, but the biggest surprise for me was how the birds are displayed. There is a different person who specializes with information about the animals, one for birds, another for reptiles and fish ect. ect. You learn whom to ask for quickly. A very friendly place for people, because I bring my birds, I'm not sure about other pets. Pros: information, clean, friendly more
