A Japanese Owned and Run Japanese Restaurant! 11/29/2011

This place is the best Japanese comfort food in the Portland region. It is owned and run by a Japanese Family. The food is consistent, good quality, down to earth, and cooked with skill and love. The food is healthy, tasty, and authentic! They are very kind, helpful, and the service is fast. No business is perfect as we all know, but after 5 years of going here, it is THE BEST JAPANESE RESTAURANT IN PORTLAND. I have many Japanese family and friends, and they all agree. We take our Japanese national friends here to eat. Prices are too low. \r \r If you have ever been to the typical knockoff Japanese restaurant that is not really Japanese you probably have had a bad experence. Try this place. You'll love it. more

authentic, great portion, great prices 4/29/2011

This place is a gem! Clean, quick, friendly service, very generous portions, very great prices. I can feed my family of 4 for $30 or less. The menu has a HUGE variety and includes many items you find in Japanese homes and restaurants in Japan. It appeals to both the Western palate and Japanese palate. My husband (Japanese, from Japan) and I both can agree on this place. My daugther once spilled her drink everywhere, and they were very kind and efficient about handling the whole thing. This place is just as time and cost efficient as the Pizza Schmizza at the end of the strip mall if not faster. You will leave full, FOR SURE! more

Disgusting 1/5/2011

I and my wife just had sushi at this restaurant based on good reviews in the internet. Indeed their sushi was authentic and very good. However, my wife spotted a wiry hair from the last salmon sushi piece, which ruined the initial wonder. More importantly, when we told the waitress abut it, she came back with a piece of new salmon sushi and not a single word of apology from the chef (an old Japanese gentleman). And they charged us fully. I may be able to put up with a piece of hair from my sushi once in a while and forgive the mistake. But the lack of professionalism or arrogance of the chef disgusts me for sure. We will never go back to this restaurant again. more

family owned and operated 2/20/2010

If you want genuin comfort Japanese food in relaxing atomosphere, this is the place to go. Owned and operated by a family: dad, mom, son and 2 daughters! Nothing fancy or flashy, but the food is honestly good. Pros: down-to-earth, home cooking! more

True Japnese food! 6/1/2009

New Phone No.: (503) 296-0045 Sambi Restaurant, next to Jesuit High School, is my favorite Japanese restaurant. Machiko, the owner’s wife, welcomes their customers with a friendly warm smile. The price is very reasonable. The taste of the foods is very good. What I like most about Sambi is that they have no difference in the price between the lunch menu and the dinner menu! My favorite dish is the “Combination Special”: Sushi with a choice of Teriyaki Chicken, Salmon, Tempura or ---. If you are a Sushi fanatic, try the individual Sushi: $2 for 2 pieces. I also recommend the non-sushi menu like “Yakisoba Noodle” or “Curry & Rice”. Don’t know how they make money with such generous prices. Sushilover Pros: Tasty food with great price Cons: The store is not visible from HW more

Best Sushi ANYWHERE! 3/4/2008

The first time I ever went to Sambi, it was still attached to Owajimaya. I'd only had sushi once before (at another restaurant that shall remain nameless here), but had been a huge fan of other Japanese foods, and was excited to try it again. The food was great, the service really good, and the atmosphere wonderful as well.\r \r Since it moved from Owajimaya to the Beaverton Sports Plaza (Next to Jesuit High School), the service has continued to be phenomonal, and the food fabulous. I took a party of 10 there for our Wedding dinner rehearsal, and they never even batted an eye. Everything turned out wonderfully, and the price was VERY reasonable for that large of a group. \r \r I have only had one poor experience with them at all, and that was greatly overshadowed by the food itself, which has always been exceptional. This is the ONLY place that my husband and I will eat sushi at now. Pros: Ambience, Parking, Service Cons: Small dining area more

Keep driving 7/26/2007

I have given this place more than enough chances. I just got done eating my last bowl of yakisoba that was sitting in a pool of oil. We've been served soggy, greasy katsue, bad miso, and an omu rice that was a heaping plate of rice, egg, ketchup and lukewarm curry sauce. No vegetable, no meat. The California rolls are mostly mayonnaise. Unless you're absolutely starving, I'd strongly recommend making the extra effort to find another place. Pros: Ample parking Cons: The food more

Hard to find, but a good spot 7/12/2007

This is another gem in another Beaverton stripmall. This is a very small restaurant. I always seem to come back. Owners and staff are super nice. Food is good and pretty cheap (I think), especially the lunch special (my personal favorite), where I can grab an entree and get miso soup, salad, and sushi -- all for under $8.00 most of the time. That said, I've made this a regular lunch spot when I'm in the area. \r \r Since it moved, the restaurant can be hard to find, but it is near the Pizza Schmizza place ... that's the only way I can tell friends where it is. more
