Rip you off and treat you like garbage 3/22/2010

If I could give this place negative stars, I would. DO NOT GO HERE. They pull a bait-and-switch and treat customers like dirt. We went here 2 weekends ago for lunch and I had one of the worst experiences I've ever had at a restaurant. After getting seated, we immediately get 3 kinds of salsa placed in front of us and are asked if we want chips and guacamole. I responded by saying that we didn't want guac, but if the chips were free (like they are at every Mexican restaurant on the planet), we'll gladly take some. The hostess acted like she suddenly couldn't speak English but she mumbled yes. To clarify, I repeated my question again about the chips being complimentary and she again said yes. After we got the ""free"" overcooked/burned chips, we ordered our fish and chicken tacos with spicy beans and rice. What was once a cheap lunch turned into an expensive meal because it was an extra $4 each for the beans and another dollar for a ""bigger"" (according to the menu) flour tortilla instead of a corn tortilla. After our tiny tacos come out, my taco with the ""bigger"" flour tortilla was the exact same size as my girlfriend's miniature corn tortilla taco. The spicy beans and rice were actually pretty good, but then I remembered I paid $4 for them to fill me up because the baby taco sure didn't. We asked for another basket of chips because, ya know, they were ""free"" and all. When we finish and get the bill, we are charged TWICE for $3 chips and salsa! I ask our unfriendly server (who I think was also the manager/owner) what was the deal, he proceeded to argue with me for a good 2 or 3 minutes that the chips weren't free and tried to BS me by saying it was the hostess' first day. I told him it wasn't my problem and that I refused to pay for them. He argued a little more and said he'd only take off one of the $3 chip charges because he said... get this... ""they are homemade"". Uh.... What? Either way, they weren't good. Would have been better off with my stale tortilla chips I got at the grocery store 2 years ago. After he returns with the revised bill, the server continues to argue and tells me that ""Sausalito is expensive"" and we ""shouldn't expect free chips"". Well, I wouldn't expect them if we weren't told they were free. A Mexican lunch with no drinks except tap water cost me $25. WTF? And a rude and disrespectful manager/server to go along with the experience. Avoid this place if you don't like to be treated like garbage or don't like getting ripped off. 1 star out of 5. Pitiful. Pros: Good Salsa Cons: Everything else -- Price, Service, Fraud, Food, Proportions more

They charge for every little thing! 7/30/2009

The online menu is woefully outdated; the cheese enchiladas with rice and beans that online say $6.95 turned out to be $10.45--quite a difference! They bring you salsa (which we didn't ask for) and leave it on the table and when you ask for chips to go with it they charge you for them--I've never heard of another place doing this. The menu doesn't warn you that the chips and salsa are not complimentary. The guacamole is very good but not worth the price for the small amount you get. The rice and beans are tasteless and the chips are hard and cold. We paid close to $60. for 3 of us and we did not have any alcohol, only 1 Coke! The wait staff is not very attentive and they weren't busy when we were there (we were the only ones on the deck and only a few inside). I definitely won't be going back and I'd never recommend this place to anyone. Pros: Great guacamole! Cons: Chips are cold and hard, food is way too expensive! more

Fresh, tasty food at reasonable prices 6/6/2009

I've been a regular at the Taco Shop for almost 4 years so I have sampled almost everything on the menu. One of the many features of this little jewel is the freshness of the food, the subtle spices and flavors and the careful way it has been prepared. The chips are hand made on site. The complimentary salsas, made from quality produce, are outstanding and there are dozens of bottles of salsa spices lining an entire wall inside the restaurant for anyone to use. I also appreciate the quality of service and the cleanliness of the shop. The wait staff is attentive and friendly; happy in their jobs and loyal to the business. There is clearly a lot of attention made to the decor; hand picked pieces come from a variety of sources adding much to the colorful ambiance. I'm happy to note that given the steady stream of business from a class clientele, this wonderful gem of an eatery is going to be around and thriving for a long long time and I expect to continue to frequent the Taco Shop often. Pros: Unique recipes make this a special place to eat more

Am I in Baja 3/13/2006

I love the food! It's just like the food I love to eat in Mexico but without the airfare. On a sunny day you can even catch a tan. Lots of outdoor seating. Do not leave there without having the salsalito taco I love it so much that I eat three of them every time I go there. Pros: cheep eats more

Great food - fantasitc service! 7/27/2005

Salsalito Taco shop was some of the best Mexican I've had north of the border. The shrimp quesadilla is to die for and was a really good portion for the price. My friend had the chicken mole enchiladas and devoured every bit. The owner was there and took really good care of us, making sure our water was always full and that our next beer was on the way before we took our last sip. Really cute decor. Had a family and pet friendly environment. Pros: Quick Service, Great food, Pet friendly ;-) more

The Only Mexican In Town 6/18/2005

Even if Salsalito wasn't the only Mexican restaurant in the neighborhood I would still recommend it. They use fresh ingredients and everything was very tasty. However, the servers were a bit confused and no one seemed to know where they were going or what they were doing. The main drawback for me is that, unlike other Mexican restaurants that give you complimentary chips, Salsalito charges you for them. They immediately bring a selection of great salsas to your table but if you want the chips to go with them you have to pay. And to continue the cheapness theme they also do not offer free refills on sodas like every other restuarant in the country. But besides that, this was a really good Mexican restaurant. Pros: Good Food, Fresh Ingredients Cons: No free chips!, No refills! more
