Sagepath ? ?Atlanta's Design Sweat Shop? 6/28/2011

- Work/life balance is poor: Management does not respect personal boundaries and demands that you respond to after-hour phone calls and emails. They regularly require employees to work holidays and be available during paid time off. No one leaves early. - Turnover is high: In 2 years 31 people have left the company. - The benefits package is weak: Fewer paid holidays than industry standard. Zero comp time or pay for overtime. - Culture is poor: Management cultivates an environment of paranoia, resulting in little collaboration. New employees are not introduced to the team. Management encourages employees to spy on each other. - Creative is poor: Talent doesn't stay long because projects are micromanaged by one of the owners. Advice to Senior Management If you do not wish for your company to be regarded as a ""mom and pop shop,"" then do not operate as a ""mom and pop shop."" I.e. do not ask employees to work from your home. Do not harass employees on their weekends, holidays and vacations. Do not ask employees to be unpaid models for your photoshoots. Do not have personal spats in the office space -- it's unprofessional. more

Sagepath ? ?Overpromise, Under-Deliver? 6/28/2011

? Lacks leadership and has little internal process ? everything is done by the ?fly by the seat of your pants? methodology including billing and invoicing. ? Insincere approach to client services. Often internal project teams are kept in the dark and are not encouraged to collaborate on projects. Most everything is done at the last minute. It?s a ?yes? approach to most everything rather than working towards actual client solutions and providing strong recommendations. ? Execution of projects is valued more than strategic or thought-leadership. Very little planning. ? Next to no account/project management. ? Employee retention is poor. It?s a revolving door of very talented people. This creates a stressful environment for those still in the office. ? Team lunches or happy hour is strongly discouraged. ? Over sale positions and titles; management does not allow employees to reach their potential or do the work that the employee thought they were hired to do. ? No professional development, training or opportunities to ?move up? ? No work/life balance and lack of personal boundaries from management. It?s 24/7. Advice to Senior Management ? Micromanaging capable employees will hold them back from reaching their true potential; projects will suffer. ? When you?re struggling to retain employees ? stop and think about why they are leaving and listen to what they say. Take action and make changes. ? No process creates a hostile and unfair environment. ? Lack of communication is harmful to creativity; Focus on being trustworthy and consistent. ? Be honest with employees and clients about what Sagepath is capable of producing. ? Stop the grapevine and gossip at the core. It?s damaging to morale. ? It?s ok to be a ?Mom and Pop? shop- just embrace it and be proud. ? No professional development makes employees feel lost and like there is nothing to work towards. ? Allow everyone to have a say in projects. Everyone should feel like they own projects and are proud to work with clients. Create a collaborative and creative environment. more
