Sushi...Done right 8/8/2011

Love this place. Went here on a whim to check it out because I live in Venice and the sushi places there are crowded and really, well, not that good. The fish quality is excellent, the service is great, especially because when we were there, they were swamped, and without us even asking, they comped a few items on our plate. So for anyone complaining about the ""included gratuity"", Well, everyone by now knows, standard is 20%, bare minimum is 18.5. But I get it, this is LA, and every self entitled assclown lives here and thinks they deserve special treatment as soon as they get off the bus from (fill in the blank). Just because useless celebrity reality TV fake stars don't tip, doesn't mean it should be the standard. I'm glad these guys cover their ass knowing that this city sucks as bad as the people inhabiting it. I tip an extra twenty to the manager just for doing it right, act accordingly. Anyone who has ever worked in the service industry in LA knows how much the public here sucks. If you can't afford to tip, you can't afford to go out. I hope they pee in your sake. Bottom line, this place is the cat's pajama's...do people still say that? Who cares, if you can find toro belly this good anywhere else, then go there.....but i doubt it. P.S. ""Good but smelled fishy I like the chow, but it smelled fishy inside. They need to air it out."" Hey genius, you know what they make sushi out of right? Morons....god, I hate the residents of this city. You ruin California. more

Good but smelled fishy 3/11/2011

I like the chow, but it smelled fishy inside. They need to air it out. more

Worth the money! 1/5/2011

Fresh, delicious sushi. I would recommend getting one of the three combo dishes - that way you get a little taste of everything. Plenty of seating, but it fills up fast. Fast and friendly service. A little pricey, but definitely worth it for the taste. more

Very underwhelming 9/8/2010

I'm thoroughly disappointed that this place won best in the city; this undermines my confidence in the rest of CS ratings. It is entirely mediocre -- bland ambiance, uninteresting food. We went once and agreed that we did not intend to return. Not because it was terrible but because nothing impressed us. more

My favoriite sushi in the Marina! 6/15/2010

Great local place. The fish swims off the plate! Pros: fresh, crab roll Cons: slightly pricey more

Absolutely love it!! 10/20/2009

This is my children and my favorite Sushi restaurant. They talk about it all the time. Very nice staff and decor. We have always had a great experience here. Love it! Pros: Great real sushi Cons: I have to fly to LA for it more

Good Sushi 10/15/2009

Good sushi, with the friendliest, cutest host west of Lincoln. Pros: Friendliest, cutest host Cons: Limited Menu more

Unbelievably addictive 10/13/2009

I've gone to Sushi Nozawa in the Valley for years, so when Sugarfish ""by Sushi Nozawa"" opened in Marina Del Rey, I was curious to see what they would offer. The simple answer is that I've haven't made the trip back to the Valley in months as a result -- this place is phenomenal. Unbelievably fresh, delicious fish with perfect sauces and excellent prices -- it makes every other sushi place in town seem both overpriced and tired. Seriously. The only thing that'll distract me from this place is their new branch in Brentwood. Pros: Phenomenal sushi at reasonable prices Cons: Spoiled me for every other sushi place in town more

Excellent Sushi with great atmosphere 9/25/2009

This sushi is likely to be the most fresh and flavorful you've ever had. From NY to LA, it is hands down one of the best sushi restaurants I've ever been to. And the staff couldn't be more helpful and nice. Pros: The quality of the sushi is hands down the best in the city. more

Unexpected sushi mecca in the Marina 9/20/2009

The magic Nozawa combo of warm rice & cold fresh fish are in the Marina - you don't have to leave the area anymore! SugarFish Marina is amazing for its quality and convenience. The sushi melts in your mouth, and you will savor every bite. I wouldn't say that its exactly kid-friendly, but we have adventurous 6 & 3 year olds who will eat the Edamame and the ""Cookie"" (cooked fish only) here. The atmosphere is pretty modern-casual, so you don't worry about the making a mess! They keep asking to go back! The iced green tea is very flavorful, and the staff has always been really helpful and friendly, even though the tip is already built into the price!!! Pros: top quality sushi, no frills setup! more

Finally found what I'm looking for! 9/16/2009

This is arguably the best sushi in Los Angeles with the possible exception of the Brentwood location! Pros: incredible value and food quality Cons: Menu is a bit limited more

Truely unique sushi experience 9/16/2009

fun inviting environment, great value for sushi of this quality, easy selection, quick service, consistent high quality experience. Pros: Consistently the best sushi more

Sushi Heaven! 9/16/2009

Seriously, I have never had fish melt in your mouth this way. After eating the Trust Me menu I was full but couldn't resist ordering more. I had to have another round of albacore and another toro roll. The albacore is like velvet, the salmon with the sesame seeds so unique, the toro roll the best I have ever had. When they have Uni, it's a must. For Westsiders, they just opened a Brentwood location! Pros: Moderately priced for such high quality food. Excellent Serv more

Awesome sushi 8/28/2009

This place is great! Fish so fresh it is hard to believe. The staff is very helpful and the prices are extremely reasonable. Don't miss this little gem! Pros: great food, great service, great prices more

As good as It gets!!! 3/25/2009

The best sushi deal in town period!!! Two thumbs up and my toes too!!! You can tell right away that the quality and freshness are the trademark at this place and the friendly service to top it all off make it ""THE SPOT"" for any food lover. Pros: Quality and price more

The freshest sushi in Los Angeles 3/10/2009

I can honestly say that is the best sushi I have every eaten. I dream about it. I like being able to sit down and get the best the chef has to offer. I am always amazed how fresh the sushi is, it melts in your mouth. The rice is perfect. I like that I can get a quik meal if I need one, or bring friends and sit down and spend time there. The servers are efficient and are very helpful when I bring guest that are unfamiliar with restaraunt. There are certain restaraunt that stick out, whether it is steak, burgers, or whatever. When sushi is brought up in conversation, Sugarfish stands above the rest. more

SugarFish is sensational 3/6/2009

After hearing so many friends talk about SugarFish I decided to try it out with my sister. We went and both ordered the Trust Me. I really enjoyed the albacore and the salmon. The sushi melts in your mouth while you enjoy all the flavors of the freshest fish you will ever have accompanied by the rice cooked to perfection, and the sauce or the mixture of homemade wasabi and soy sauce that gives a hint of spice. I loved it so much that afterward I had to order extra Halibut, Snapper, and a Yellowtail roll. I recommend this place for it is the best sushi i have ever had. more

be ready for the ultimate ""red snapper sushi"" experience 3/1/2009

So...out of nearly all the Japanese restaurants in the L.A. area this is by far the best for the freshness of the fish, the quality of sushi (the red snapper was fantastic). So good!! more

Best Albacore ever! 2/25/2009

Well, if you really love sushi Sugarfish is the place to be. Fish is ULTRA fresh and tasty, (red snapper, halibut & albacore are phenomenal) they have a variety of shrimp sushi that i never had anywhere else. more

Freshest Fish in Town! 2/18/2009

I've been to Sugarfish about 7 times since it opened, and I've never been disappointed. Great price for super fresh fish. I always get the chef's ""trust-me"" (sometimes two). The salmon is like silk!!! Great sashimi and tasty crab rolls too. I live in Manhattan Beach, and used to drive to Sasabune for high quality sushi. But since Sugarfish opened, I always go there. Its better! Pros: Fish like silk. Great prices. Great service. more

Owner Message
  • The SUGARFISH concept is "foodcentric" and "qualitydriven". It's born out of our love and admiration for Chef Nozawa's style of food. It can be boiled down to three simple ideas 1. Like Nozawa, our passion is to provide our guests with the highest quality sushi possible 2. High quality sushi is often considered a "special occasion" food and we want to make simply great sushi something people can enjoy everyday. 3. We want our guests to love our food so much that they want to share ii with their friends and bring them in.
