More expensive than the dealer! My dad has taken multiple cars here for a few years. After he told me about his last bill I did some research and found that they are charging DOUBLE what the local Volkswagen dealer charges for parts and more than double compared to some other local shops. That's just not fair business. As far as the reviewers who say these guys really know their stuff...the exhaust my dad had installed on his VW leaked from the day he drove it out the door. He had Ryan's fix it immediately, but the leak reappeared within a few weeks. When he took it to another shop they said it hadn't been installed properly. If you want honest VW/Audi and foreign service, try Pelham Auto in Belchertown. I bet you'll save almost half for top quality work. more

I have had nothing but a great experience with Ryan Imported in Northampton. I've been bringing my car there for two years (so far I've had them do the exhaust, put on a new head, and replace the fuel system as well as all the regular maintenance) and trust them implicitly. The turnaround time has always been incredibly quick, even on short notice, and they've worked around my schedule without complaint. Joe has stayed late to walk me through the work: with a car as difficult and with as many intangibles as mine (it's a '71 Mini Cooper), I really appreciate being in the loop and knowing I'm not being taken advantage of. The customer service has also always been exceptional. I know some seem to find the cost excessive, and I guess I have a little trouble sympathizing. Paying a little bit more to get a job done well, using the best parts and with the most experience, hardly seems like a trade-off to me. I do a little work on the car myself (oil changes, fan belts, brakes - the easy stuff), and I've spoken with guys at most of the major parts suppliers in the area - they've been nothing but complimentary about Ryan Imported. They wanted $1000 to repair my car, I ask a friend and he told me to take the car somewhere else because Ryan is very expensive, the other mechanic is going to repair my car for around $400. more

Joe Ryan knows his stuff. Many Mercedes mechanics don't even drive a model of the marque. Joe has 3 Diesels and an SEL. I take my 560 SEL there for work and he always has some pointers about what needs to be looked at or what doesn't. The higher cost is offset by his experience and turn around time. I have taken my car to Ryan's on several occasions for various reasons and each time they were extremely reliable- they had the job done quickly and fixed the problem completely. The people I dealt with were all friendly and knowledgeable and when I asked questions they gave me answers that made sense. Much more personable than other garages in the area and I trust their work much more- I would recommend them over anywhere else I have been in the area. I am a female college student from california, and I took my car to Ryan Imported three times in the summer of 2007. I am not very knowledgable about cars and after the third time, it was obvious that I had been taken advantage of. After doing some research, I realized they had charged me 5 hours (!) for what was listed as a one hour job and actually only takes about 20 minutes. I disputed the charges and they cut my bill by 50% but I still ended up stopping the payment through my credit card (they had not fixed my car at all) and I assume that the other two times my car went through there I was grossly overcharged. The whole experience was frustrating and humiliating. Pros: Location! Right in downtown Northampton Cons: Failed to fix any of the problems with my car and completely overcharged me. more
