Stay away from Bruce and his plastic Barbie brush. He will manhandle your head and should stick to buzz cuts and mens styles. He has no idea how to style women's hair, and finally...

great atmosphere 11/30/2009

this place is fun just to sit and watch people getting their hair cut let alone get yours done. the staff is always working and socializing, the place is located in the heart of los angeles and theirs plenty near by to go eat. Pros: atmosphere, style, good music more

They know hair 9/9/2009

So I was looking to change barber shops for sometime. I did my online research and found Rudy's close to my home which I liked. But when I started reading reviews from other sites they were mostly negative. I thought how bad could it be. One reviewer talked about get charge for a shampoo with his hair cut. It must have been the first time he had received a hair cut in public. Yes they did offer the shampoo, but I turned it down cause my hair was fresh and clean already. I took pictures and talked to the stylist. I have had two different people cut my hair there. They both did a good job and made suggestions and the end result I was happy with. The barber shop can always be a little nerve wrecking, Rudy's is no different. Great location and trained stylist. Shouldn't expect more. Pros: great place. Nice staff Cons: push the add on sales. more

Depends on stylist not Rudy's! Tipton is the Man! 2/24/2009

I have been going to Rudy's Silverlake for 2 years now and have had many stylist do my hair. Some are good and some are alright. Two months ago I started going to Tipton, He is awesome! the best haircut I have ever had! He has over 20 years experience and it shows. So you see , it is not about Rudy's, it is about the person you go to. Rudy's,, you are lucky to have such a great stylist doing Great haircuts for such a cheap price, people take advantage and get a great haircut from a great artist. more

It's alway an interesting experience, that's for sure. 2/4/2009

It's usually a decent cut, but service is poor and comes with a lot of attitude. It's irritating since they are cutting hair, not performing brain surgery. One stylist told me that she hated it there. Another tried to overcharge me. The overcharger first told me that the $5 shampoo was ""manditory."" She backed off when I told her that I wanted that confirmed by management. She then tried to charge me for a long cut instead of the short cut, which is what I had. Still, I've never had to wait more than 15 minutes and the cuts I've received are good to very good. Pros: conveinent, inexpensive Cons: rude staff, hard sell on products more

RIP OFF! 1/28/2009

I didn't have a hair over 3 inches on my head and somehow I walked out $32 in the hole after tip. I don't care how nice you are, but don't toss me in a chair and start shampooing because ""I had product in my hair."" Just buzz and trim and be done with it. I was on my way to the gym for crying out loud. I assumed the cut would cost $15, instead it was double. My drunken uncle could cut my hair just as well.... I'm an athlete, not a movie star. Treat me like one. Pros: the people were nice, but I could honestly care less Cons: cost, efficiency, SCAM! more

kinda bummed, didn't meet my expectations 12/1/2008

I usually go to a cute chick in the Santa Clarita Valley who charges about $60. Being a student with zero income, I thought it was worth it to try Rudy's which costs only $30 to cut (not shampoo) my long hair. It wasn't. The guy who cut my hair was somewhat clumsy with his scissors, and didn't cut much at all. Although, whatever he did trim, turned my great haircut that had grown out into a really mediocre look. I love layers and bangs (ie: hipster 'do's) but he kinda just made me look like a character from Friends in the 90's. Hate to shout you out like this but, sorry Kevin. Avoid him. Def going back to my regularly priced stylist. more

Guys stay away! 10/31/2008

Unless you really want a hipster, uneven, pomo thing with your hair. These people honestly don't have solid hair cutting skills and it seems to be more about the interior design and ""cool vibe"" of the place. Also they have no personality whatsoever and seem kind of angry all the time. I guess that's part of the whole hipster package, but they put that stuff ahead of doing a good job. Avoid. more

Big ego, little experience 7/24/2008

I am a male and I figure I have gotten about 10 haircuts here over a period of 2 years. ONE of them was one of the best I've ever gotten but that was with me talking the poor girl through every step of the cut. I would say THREE of the cuts were just okay. That leaves me with SIX bad haircuts - everything from being uneven to whitewalled ears to something reminiscent of a mullet, you name it. ONCE I even had to get my money back because the haircut was so bad. So if you want a hipster, spiky, streaky, faux-hawk rat-tail then go to Rudy's. If you want to look good, stay away. These kids are hired for their hipster look, but they seriously lack experience. Pros: They're good with edgy looks, spiky styles, buzz cuts, faux-hawks, choppy hipster mullet looks Cons: Stylists lack experience, too much texturizing (aka. butchering), don't do well with normal men's styles. more

Silver Lake - yes. Santa Monica - no. 5/14/2008

Rudy's Santa Monica was a major disappointment after an excellent haircut at the Silver Lake location. I was forced to explain the desired haircut four times before it was even marginally understood, and the resulting haircut was uneven and not well blended b/w the longer top length and the shorter side/back length. Additionally (unlike at Silver Lake), despite being a buzz cut, I was charged $24 rather than $15 because the cut ""was two different lengths."" Rudy, please ensure consistent quality in your locations and among your employees. Cons: lack of haircutting skill & grasp of haircut descriptions more

good coloring, cuts, and personalites.... 4/11/2008

I've been here to get highlights and cut, about four times now. Every time I had a different stylist and every time I left very pleased. Pros: walk in Cons: long wait more

Rudy's Santa Monica 3/11/2008

I just got my hair cut at Rudy's in Santa Monica and my experience was overall wonderful. I called ahead of time and put my name on the list, so I only waited about 5 minutes. The staff was really friendly and the girl that cut my hair listened to what I wanted and my concerns. My cut is basically perfect and the bill was under $40 including tip (I have mid-length hair), making in one of the cheapest cuts I've had since puberty. I will definately return. Pros: Cheap, good haircuts, you can find free parking in the neighborhoods. Cons: Nothing, really. And I usually have a few complaints about salons. more

women beware!! 12/23/2007

Inexperienced staff. Don't get color done, I paid $100.00 to look like someone poured mud on my head. I had to go home and bleach the hell out of it. Pros: if your a guy they do an OK job at cutting Cons: my hair came out the color of mud more

Do These People Know What Barbers Do? 11/2/2007

They need to rename this place to Rudy's Horrible Hair Salon for Hipster Posers. When a place puts the word ""Barber"" in its name, I immediately think of people that know how to properly cut men's hair. I decided to give this place a try since it was close to my house and I will never return. The people are friendly but they are not barbers. They do not do any blade clean up using shaving cream. I asked for a zero head shave and what I got was some faux hair cut that was nowhere near a zero or even a one clipper cut. Cons: Overpriced and underskilled more

An ""easy"" place to get your hairs cut 10/23/2007

Let me start by saying that I don't enjoy getting my hairs cut. There are a million other things I'd rather think about and do with my time. It's a necessary thing obviously but the anxiety about knowing whether or not I'll like the end result or if I can trust the person with the shears is no fun. Then came Rudy's. I've been a regular for about 2 years now. It's convenient, open pretty much all the time and I've had cuts from 3 different ""stylists"" or whatever you call them. All of them were to my satisfaction or better. I consider this nothing short of amazing, as I don't know how many random places I've been to in my life where I've been ok with the cut or just plain unhappy and eager for my hair to grow. Going to Rudy's and getting a cheap, anxiety free haircut is an amazing thing. Pros: Knowing that whoever I get will be a pro Cons: Occaisonally there can be a wait - esp. Saturdays more

Just what I wanted with a little Siverlake Funk!! 10/20/2007

I moved to the Silverlake Los Feliz area about 2 years ago, and for some reason never have gone to rudy's before. I went to rudy's last week on a teusday morning. To my surprize there was hardly any wait and tons of parking. A soon as the receptionist took my name I was called. My stylist(Vanessa) sat me down in her chair. She did exactly what i wanted and gave it a little Siverlake Funk, which was very refreshing and subtle. She walked me to the reception desk and gave me her card and explained how I could call to put my name on the list in future haircuts. I will be going back to rudy's and i would recomend it to friends. Pros: Great Cut. Great Music. Great Price. Cons: Sometimes A long wait more

Great Cut with alittle Siverlake Funk!!! 10/20/2007

I moved to the Silverlake Los Feliz area 2 years ago, and for some odd reason never got my hair cut at Rudy's Barbershop. I went in last week early Teusday morning to find no wait and ample parking. As soon as I sat down a stylist called my name and sat me in her chair. The cut was great and just what i wanted(and just a little silverlake funk). The stylist gave me her card and walked me to the reception desk. I recomend Rudy's barbershop and will be going back!! p.s. Vanessa cut my hair and i Love it!! Pros: Great Music Great Cut Great Price Cons: Sometimes Long Wait more

Oh good lord, please spend your money somewhere else. 9/22/2007

Stay away from Bruce and his plastic Barbie brush. He will manhandle your head and should stick to buzz cuts and mens styles. He has no idea how to style women's hair, and finally passed me off to someone else when we both were at the unserstanding that he was just not going to be able to accomplish what I'd gone in for (a simple wash and blow-dry. don't let him near your hair with scissors!). I was on the verge of tears nearly the entire time. All I can say is UGH! Pros: cheap, funky, product smells NICE Cons: inexperienced, should be choosier with staff more

Simple, but good 9/18/2007

I went to Rudy's on Melrose for my first hair cut since moving to LA. They were very friendly and overall it was a good experience. They were a little short when quoting my wait time and I had to wait about 20 minutes, but no big deal b/c there are lots of magazines to read and good music. Jerry did a great job cutting my hair; he knew exactly what I was going for, even though I am not very good at knowing or describing what it is I want. It is a cool environment and they weren't snotty at all. Keep in mind this is not a luxury celebrity spa folks, so don't go expecting a world class experience. Its just a barber shop, they cut hair and they do it well. I am glad I found a new shop on my first try since moving here. The best part.... THE PRICE!!! VERY AFFORDABLE! Pros: PRICE!!!! Good hair cut. atmosphere Cons: You can't make an appointment more

Rudy's Butcher-shop 5/29/2007

Stay away from all Rudy's Barbershops! Their stylists are inexperienced and have no idea what they are doing, things as simple as ""just a little trim"" turn into losing several inches of hair and a totally new style you didn't ask for. Your odds of getting just a completely terrible haircut are well above 75%, I've now tried 3 different locations (sunset, melrose and santa monica) and all of them are awful. You're better off at Supercuts, you'll get the same terrible haircut and only pay half as much. more
