We had to wait a little for our food, but it was well worth the wait. We found later that the food was cooked solely by the Owner and from scratch, plus the restaurant looked pretty busy. It was the best Thai we've ever had, if not a little spicy. I ordered mild on my vegan selection, the sauce was unbelievable, but the vegetables were a little too spicy for me. It's not often that you can find good vegan selections in a restaurant, but this proved to be the exception. Even the carnivore in our midst loved his selection. Be sure to try the vegetarian egg rolls -- they're the best! Love this place. more

This is the Best Thai Resturaunt in the Twin Cities. I know it has had some difficulties over the last year. This is still the only reason I have to drive 40 miles in to St. Paul. The atmospere is wonderful. The service is not always great , but they aim to please.The Food is alway excellent! I've been going here for more than 7 years. Parking is alway available at the old science museum parking ramp at a great price, reguardless of game day or not. (North 1 block, east 1/2 block) Will continue to eat here forever. My husband and I had lunch at Ruam Mit Thai today. It was the 2nd time both of us had been there. We went early because we had received such poor service the last time we had been there for lunch (it was very busy), we wanted to give them the benefit of doubt. We were seated promptly because it was 11:10 and the only other people in the restaurant were 2 people ordering food to go and the staff. We waited almost 5 minutes to get a glass of water and another 5 to order. It was then at least 20 minutes before we got our food. Never once during that time did we see our server. When she brought our food, I asked right away for some to-go boxes and our bill. By the time we had finished our meal (about 15 minutes), our server finally brought the to-go containers and our bill. The server was rude and when we paid at the counter, she did not even say a word to us. I said thank you and the food was delicious and I received a scowl. If you have plenty of time and don't care wether or not your server is polite, this is the place to get Thai food. The food was fabulous. Next time, I'll call in my order to go. more

As Thai food goes, I'm ok with Ruam Mit's offerings. I did their pad thai and their chicken spinach dish at various times and I really can't complain. Their appetizers are fine, but not outstanding. However, because the food is not extraordinary, the bad service seems to outweigh the good food. You can read from other reviews of the downright lousy service. I have experienced that, as well. The Thai hostess served as cashier, waitress, busboy, to-go-order-taker and was way too busy to really take care of customers in any meaningful way. When I finally caught her attention after entering, she pointed towards a table indicating that we should be seated. It was quite a while before menus were offered and orders taken. When the food arrived, it was good, solid Thai food. It's unfortunate that such a great little restaurant does not make more investment in staffing. This is, by far, one of the best Thai restaurants in the Twin Cities! Having moved from Portland, OR where I felt good Thai food was unparalell to any other place in the US - I am happy to say, because of Ruam Mit, the Twin Cities offers equally delicious cuisine. The food is phenomenal and for those truly familiar with Thai food, it is quite authentic. I've heard that it's history of ownership and quality have been a little tumultuous, but since it's reopening and with the management under the original award winning owner, it exceeds all of my expectations of a fabulous family-owned restaurant. The service is quite unique to that of any family-owned restaurant - very good, friendly and passionate to serve good food and hopefully bring back returning customers. But, as with any other family-owned restaurant, can easily be challenged due to an unpredictable sudden rush of customers or take out orders. I advise everyone dining here to be flexible, take your time and just enjoy the dining experience of a genuine family restaurant. It isn't, afterall, a high-end - commercially owned wine and dine elite five star restaurant. Finally, a note about parking - it's downtown St. Paul. What do you expect? I really wanted to like this place. But after ordering takeout a couple of days ago, I really felt I had to write a review about this place. While I do have to say that the Pad Thai flavors/spices were good, the meat we had in both dishes was downright horrible. The pork in the Pad Thai was chewy and hard to swallow. The chicken we had in the Pra Rham Long Song was tough and practically dried out. I wanted to like this place. But with the horrible food and the outrageous prices you have to pay for some Thai food here, I'm just going to stick with the local Chinese place that does delivery for the time being. We attempted to visit Ruam Mit on a Friday night at about 9:30 and were told when we arrived that they were closed. We thought that was quite odd considering the dining room was full and it was a weekend night. Not being deterred, the following night we called in an order at about 7:15. When we arrived to pick it up close to 8, there was no one manning the register and a number of other people milling around waiting for orders and to pay their bills. No wait staff were visible, either. Over the next hour, the desk was occassionally visited by one of two people working the front of the house. If/when we were able to get their attention and tell them that we were waiting for an order, they nodded and disappeared, never returning with food. In the one hour that we waited in the restaurant for our order of two basic entrees, we watched countless people walk out without being served and at least 5 or 6 other people being forced to wait an eternity for orders they too had called in. Tables went uncleared for the entire duration of the hour as well. By the time we got our food home to eat, we could have eaten the paper bag, too. That said, the food was passable, but not remarkable. Next time I'm feeling masochistic, I'll just stay home and eat glass to avoid the trouble of needing to find a parking spot in Saint Paul first. I am so glad Ruam Mit Thai is located so conveniently in downtown St Paul, that I can trot over from work and treat myself to some of the best food in the Twin Cities. I have never been disappointed. The quality of the food boarders on outlandish. They carefully package to go orders such that I can carry my dinner back to the office, always hot and always intact. The decor is nice without being overbearing & it is evidenced that the cooks at Ruam Mit put their effort into producing outstanding authentic food & dont depend on smoke and mirrors decor to hide substandard fare . . . as can be found elsewhere. My husband and I went to Ruam mit thai because we heard that they have very good food. The appetizers were very bland. The pork in our entree was pink and the pieces were too big to put in the mouth. So pretty much I think it wasn't even cooked through because the vegetables were hard. The service was bad also...there were a total of three tables and two servers. They didn't refill our water and even check up...she was vacuum on the other side of the room so I couldn't even have a conversation. I will never go back and never recommend this place to anyone! Some of the best Thai food in town. Great spring rolls. Fresh original sauces. They don't slather on the glossy veneer in the service department, but with the first bite it becomes very clear this place is all about the food. That said, they take care of whatever you need with a smile. Prices are not bad, but not great. While it's tempting to compare the prices to your run of the mill asian takeout it would be a mistake to do so. This place is on another plane. Having moved away from Saint Paul a few years ago, I have recently reaquanted myself with this restaurant, and it is worth the drive. My husband has eaten Thai food all around the country and says this is the best he's had, and though I am not as travelled, I agree with him. The food is always consistently fabulous, full of nuanced character and flavor. I highly recommend the spring rolls and the coconut milk based curry dishes. The noodle dishes we have tried have never disappointed us. On the down side, the place is lacking in ambiance, and the wait staff seems understaffed most of the time, but if you can overlook that, the food is worth it. This place was unbelievably great. The best thai food I've had in my life. My fiance and I went here for lunch on a saturday and were very pleased with our experience. The food was amazing and we had a very nice server. The only negative comment I have is that our server was the only one on at the time. She handled the whole place to herself, that included being a hostess and server. For how many tables she had I would have to say she is one of the best in the business. Found a rolled up piece of saran wrap in my Special Spring Roll (that must have been the special). When showed to the waitress, she snorted, picked it up, and unwrapped the small piece of plastic with much interest/amazement, then giggled. ???? Did not ask me if I wanted a replacement. Three customers followed, and each waited about 5 minutes because there was no one in the front to greet customers. Waitress came over when I didn't ask her to and didn't come over when I motioned for the bill. Ran out of the Orange Roughy which can happen. Food is overpriced, can get the same thing somewhere on University Street for half the price. Will avoid that spot. Cons: Parking, Bad service, Bad Service more

my son's choice for his 38th bday dinner was ruam mit, so i checked the reviews & we made early reservations because we were going to see dylan at 8 & were afraid we'd be late. but, pleasnatly, none of the fears of bad service, etc., materialized. we had great food, (the orange roughy was excellent), & a smiling server who took care of drinks & apps immediately. the rest of the food also came in a timely manner. so i would say, go for it & you could be surprised!!! I love this place. It's my favorite restaurant in the Twin Cities area and about the only reason I drive to St. Paul from Mpls. While the service isn't the best it's much better than Taste of Thailand and not as bad as some of the other reviewers seem to think. The food is the winner here. My usual order consists of Spring Rolls and the Roast Duck Curry!!!! Oh my god, that is proof there's some kind of supreme being. There has to be with food this good!!!! I usually order the Pad Thai to take home for the next day. Go and go often but please not when I'm there as I hate waiting for a table. After trying all the Thai restaurants in the Twin Cities, I finally found Ruam Mit. YUM! The Vegetable Pad Pak with Chicken is my favorite; the vegetables remarkably crisp and fresh, the sauce a subtly artful, intense blend of seasonings. The Pad Thai is equally as impressive, with depth and nuance of flavor conspicuously lacking in other area Thai restaurants. That, however, is where the praise ends. The service is laughably bad. And even when I ordered take-out to avoid it, they forgot to put it in; I waited an extra 15 min. after arriving. The interior is drab and boring. The staff is rudeand inept. If only their food wasn't so good! I'll continue to recommend this as the best Thai food in the Twin Cities - just go there for take-out, not dine-in (and make sure you call to remind them to cook your food!) About 8 months ago I commented on Ruam Mit Thai Cafe as being quite average, especially when comapring them to Thai restaurants on the east coast. I must say that after a few repeat visits, RMTC has grown on me. It is still not the place to visit for a dining experience (drab atmosphere, indifferent wait staff) however the food is quite authentic. Pad Thai excels as does Pork Woon Sen which was spicy and flavorful. The very fresh spring roll appetizers are great. Get past their shortfalls and this is one of the better ethnic places in town.
