not a bad place, but seriously- some people actually rated this place as ""good food""??? I have rarely eaten at a place where the food tastes more bland... Factor in that it is not the cheapest place and you've got yourself a pretty bad deal overall. Even a visit to the local Red Lobster is more satisfying as far as TASTE is concerned... If you are looking for a good Hawaiian Fusion place keep looking- there are MUCH BETTER options around... more

I usually don't take the time to write a review but after dropping $150 on dinner for two for tiny portions of mediocre (at best) food, I felt compelled. My wife and I had been looking forward to visiting Roy's for several months after seeing many advertisements inside in-flight magazines touting it as one of the best places to eat in Big D. We shared the sashimi sampler. Not the best start as it was not served at the right temperature. I should have been worried at the point when the waiter asked if he could get desert going "because it takes 18 minutes to prepare" yet our entrees hadn't even come out! My wife ordered the petite filet (and I do mean petite!) & lobster tail (which might have been a 2-3 oz tail at best). Both were grilled & looked like I could have done a better job in my back yard. Absolutely nothing to give it a "Hawaiian twist." I ordered the shellfish sampler. One half of a tiny lobster tail (literally two bites worth of meat), two small scallops and two small stuffed shrimp with crabmeat that had a funky metallic taste. Again, nothing that would suggest a "Hawaiian twist." All this plus two glasses of wine and two beers for $150 after tip. Oh, complimentary edimame though. Woo hoo. The seating was hardly private as we were seated in a booth with the table next to us about two feet away. The waiter was decent - about the only positive thing I have to say about this experience. Needless to say, we'll not be back. more

Food was respectable and immediate table waitstaff was knowledgable and professional. However, my table for two was between two large tables in the back of the restaurant. During the set-up of the 1st table and while I was having dinner, the waitress and a front desk representative were conducting a very loud personal conversation within 3-4 feet. Following completion of that conversation and the set up, the table weas seated at which point 2 of the individuals at the table attempted to out volume each other to the degree any conversation at my table and other tables in the vacinity was impossible. My waiter was very apologetic but at that point could do nothing. I understand large tables represent business; however, I would suggest there might be an alternative to placing small tables so close to large tables to avoid repeats of this nature. When I mentioned this to the young lady at the front on my way out, I received little reaction other than I might request a quiter table on my next visit. Fun atmosphere. It is not cozy and quiet, but noisy and "happening." The service was excellent. The waitress attentive and the other staff friendly. We had the manager stop by our table twice during the night to ask if everything was to our liking. The appetizers were a great introduction to the fusion style of the cuisine. My favorite was the "shrimp on a stick." My boyfriend's entree was amazing. He had the Basil-garlic Walu with lobster mashed potatoes. Wow. My dish however, was quite a disappointment. I had the Macadamia-nut crusted mahi mahi. After such flavorful appetizers, it was so surprising to get such a tasteless entree. Maybe it just needed more salt. Whatever it was, it defintely needed something. So, I asked for another dish and the waitress brought me the shrimp instead. This was much better than the mahi mahi, but still not as good as my boyfriend's walu. In summary, order the walu. I would definitely recommend the place. Overall, my experience at this branch of Roy's was well below my expectations. To have a big TV on broadcasting sports demostrates a lack of both class and superior service in a cozy environment. Please, fly to Tokyo and experience food, service and ambience at Roy's branches in Nishi-Azabu or Aoyama. Food in Roy's is good, although a bit expensive. Pros: food quality, quick service, good parking Cons: expensive, too casual, noisy more
