I should have heeded the reviews 2/12/2010

How hard is it to screw up wings? I should have known things weren't going to be good when the guy who ordered 10 minutes after me got his food before I did. Having ordered queso and wings, I didn't think it wuld take 30 minutes. How hard is it to either nuke some cheese or to scoop it up from a vat? As for the wings, they took even longer than the queso, about 45 minutes, and they were cold.....correction...iced cold. The scenery can be pretty great on a Friday night, but the food is downright disgusting! And I give it a one star because I am forced to give it a star at all. I dont think this place deserves even half a star. Pros: bartender was nice Cons: food was DISGUSTING! more

Taco bell is better than this dump 6/20/2009

I will never set foot in this dump again. The manager did not even apologize for the crappy service. Half the food at our table came out wrong and this is out of 30 people. They forgot to bring us out our drinks and forgot one persons food altogether. Cons: slow food, slow waiter, slow service, food crappy more

AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!! 7/11/2008

Horrible horrible experience!!! The service was horrible! I sat at the bar and the bartender did not acknowledge me at all. After 3 minutes of waiting, I asked for a menu and the bartended acted as if I had inconvienced him. When I was ready to order, I had to once again get his attention. I ordered lemonade which was poured into a childs cup, although the lady next to me was given a full sized glass for her beverage. Perhaps my 5'8'' frame reminded the bartender of a six year old. Once again I was avoided by the bartender and felt as if I had done something wrong for asking for a to go box, my check and my change. I will NEVER go back. NEVER. NEVER. NEVER. And fyi, yes I would definitely classify this restaurant as a prejudice establishment. Cons: everything more

Great patio! 5/1/2008

We had a late night pick up at the airport and stopped in to sit on the patio. Food service was closed, but the bartenders and managers were courteous and attentive. drinks were great! The patio was busy with everyone having a great time. I will definately stop back to try the food, all servers were very friendly and fun. Great atmosphere and wonderful patio! Pros: Great service, friendly personnel Cons: none more

Friendly people, great food and the best margarittas around! 4/1/2008

I have been to this place a few times and everytime i go, i have found that the service is great, the food comes out fast and NOT cold.... Our server was so nice and helpful. Its a huge restaurant, with a big patio, great for families or business parties. Friday nights are a little different, when there is not an empty table in the whole restaurant. the food took a little longer to come out. But it was still up to par. I think this is a great restaurant, great food, friendly people, and a great atmosphere! Pros: good food, good atmosphere Cons: even though the patio is the largest in buckhead, it is still hard to get a table out there on a nice day more

Dont get caught up in the negative hype by spoiled people! Rio is the last of its kind in Buckhead. 3/29/2008

Rio Grande gets a bad rep for 'authenticity', but thats not why young Buckhead wants to hang there. So there are fish on the table...and? Why this is a factor is beyond me. And no they don't play Mexican music! Who wants to hear that all night!? Not me, or my friends! They always have fun bands that play modern and fun music, and the occasional Dj that transforms the Cantina into a club late night on the weekends. The food is good, and if you order ala carte, its cheap! Chips and salsa is free, and so are the refills all night long, just ask! The drinks are strong, and you can order pitchers of margaritas for 20 bucks, which is awesome. The servers are fun and real, happy to help you as best they can. And best of all you can leave your car there over night, and come grab it the next day if you find yourself having too much fun! Pros: Affordable, Fun, Staff, Trivia Tuedays, Poker nights, good looking crowd! Cons: none more

Never avoid...GREAT place to go! 3/24/2008

So i was palnning my sisters bachelorette party. She loves mexican and someone suggested Rio Grande because of the location. After reading the other review on this page i was a little scared because they said the food was bad and the service was horrible...But i thought we'll give it a shot anyway; And i'm glad we did. It was a GREAT experience. We had a group of 15. No problem getting seated. Brett, our waiter was attentive but also allowed us to take out time. We never felt forgotten or rushed. Food was great and priced well. I can't wait to go again. Its got a great patio. Its going to be a perfect place for drinks and people watching this summer!! Pros: EVERYTHING!!! Cons: limited valet space more

Yuck! 3/15/2008

I've lived in Buckhead more than a year and have passed by Rio Grande many times, always curious to stop in. I made my first and last visit this weekend, during lunch when there were probably no more than 6 tables being served in the whole place. That should have been my first clue. The cheese dip, which was very bland, seemed to have been reheated in a microwave, making it runny and unappealing. The ground meat in the tacos and beef enchiladas was super greasy and almost the consistency of chili con carne -- not at all what I expect in tacos and enchiladas. It was also WAY over-seasoned and had a funny seasoning, in my opinion. With a regular tip (15-20%), my small cheese dip, taco and enchilada entree and a soda was $20: WAY overpriced for such less-than-average Mexican food. Sorry Rio Grande, but I won't be back. Cons: service was so-so and food was not even close to my liking more

Awful Customer Service 2/21/2008

I don't normally write reviews, but I thought this was necessary. I have been to Rio Grande 4 times now because I like the food, but the service is AWFUL. It takes about 10 minutes just to get a glass of water, the food sits on the hot line for 15 minutes while the servers just chit-chat, and no one is friendly. I have had the same level of service each time, and after this last time I will never go again. The food may be good, but there are PLENTY of better Mexican restaurants in Atlanta to choose from. I don't recommend this place unless you don't mind crappy service. Cons: awful service more

Best Atmosphere In Buckhead 10/19/2006

This is the only mexican restaurant that is so much more. There is always something going on here to keep you entertained. The management is always very pleasent. Whether your in the mood for some great food or just looking to grab a beer and watch your favorite college team then this is the right place. Pros: Atmosphere, Food. Cons: None more

NOT True Mexican by No Means... 9/26/2006

Ok, so if you want Mexican don't come here. They have freakin fish carved onto the table if that says anything. The margarita's were over price for just sour mix and the food was just as high. When you eat Mexican you go not only for the food and drinks but for the atmosphere too...well let's say you do not get any of the 3 here. I think the only reason it is popular is because it is in Buckhead, and people think just because something is in Buckhead then it must be good. If you want good Mexican go somewhere else...Buford highway isn't too far away! Pros: Nothing Cons: Everything more

Great Local Mexican Joint 9/9/2006

I usually frequent Rio Grande multiple times a week since I live around the corner. Unless the restuarant is slammed (which is quite often) everything is great. The food is what you expect to eat at a mexican restaurant and the drinks are always big and strong. There is always something going on during weeknights. I recommend this place to grab a drink before hitting the town or to grab a bite to eat after work with friends or family. Live music creates a great atmosphere during weeknights. Pros: Food, Drinks, Price Cons: Sometimes too busy. more

Sub-par food & service, nice atmosphere, OK prices 7/29/2006

Well, I made the mistake of reading these reviews and then actually trying the restaurant (and yes, I'm kicking myself). I was with a group of 13 and the fact that there was a help wanted sign was already a bad sign of things to come. The service was pretty bad (she mixed up several orders, half of us didn't have silverware even when the meals came, and they were slow to replenish the nachos). When we did get our food, I have to say it was pretty disappointing. The refried beans were flavorless and the enchiladas were stale, but the chips and salsa were pretty good. The atmosphere was good -- live country and rock music (not mexican) and lots of space between tables. I also disagree with the other reviewers about the prices -- they were OK. However, the type of live music they had should be an indication of how unoriginal, unauthentic, and sub-par this place is. I give it a D+ Pros: Atmosphere is OK (live music) Cons: Food, Service more

Way over priced 6/15/2005

If you eat at places like Chili's and TGI Fridays you may like this place. If you like authentic, flavorful food dont eat here. The food is very boring and overpriced. The margaritas are way too tart and tangy. The service is amatuerish. I feel like I wasted my money last night. Pros: location, pation, chips and salsa Cons: food, mixed drinks, service more

I believe... 8/26/2004

I have had better Mexican, but the server "Bill" made the experience very good. The valet is complementary, you just have to tip. The margaritas are good, strong and affordable. We have had margarita's all over Atlanta and these were good for folks on a budget. The food is okay...just order queso and load it on....then it is awesome as they have the best salsa, chips and queso. This is a good spot for people who are used to drinking like college students...good, cheap and strong. Pros: Inexpensive, Food served fast, Strong Margaritas more

Horrible Service 8/16/2004

Our food took 45 minutes, then the order was wrong. We eventually had to order drinks from the bar because we hadn't seen our waiter in 30 minutes. When we complained about the horrible service and food the manager told us that we should just not tip the waiter because it was all the waiter's fault and there was nothing they could do. I will NEVER go back to this restaurant and I would recommend others do the same. Cons: , Management, Food more

Subpar Mexican Food 7/12/2004

I was with a group of 30 (reserved) and we were only assigned one server to our group which made service very slow. Although the salsa and margeuritas were tasty, my entree was very disappointing. I ordered dinner enchiladas. The ground beef used in my entree was dry and had no seasoning. The refried beans were completely flavorless as if a can of them had been dumped on the plate. The enchiladas tasted just like they were made from a cheap grocery store kit. My boyfriend was also disappointed with his entree due to the dry beef and kit taste to the meals. I would say that this is a good place for drinks and nachos, but not for a satisfying Mexican meal. Pros: margeuritas, salsa more

Great Mexican Food 2/5/2003

The food here is great! You can't go wrong with the Steak Fajita's, and the queso is some of the best in town. more

10.0 my friends! 7/24/2002

The Best in food, service and atmosphere! Great location too. My favorite Mexican restaurant in the ATL. Pros: Good Parking, Great Service, Variety of entrees Cons: Too far from my house, can get crowded fast more

Great service, great bargain 7/4/2002

Very affordable, and not "standard" Mexican fare (dishes are a twist on the norm). Bar staff is friendly, and a good place to go with 2 or 20 people. Pros: food, drink, bargain more

Editorial
  • In Short
A sea of young people swarm in after work and sit at white plastic tables in front of a monster-screen television, cradling equally monstrous 46-ounce peach, strawberry, Texas and blue margaritas. Pinatas and beer mirrors inside fit the generic Mexican theme perfectly. The portions are formidable, especially after you load up on the requisite free chips and salsa. The chicken soup topped with avocado is the menu's best deal for $4.
