Always exceptional 10/17/2009

Ann is the only person to cut my hair in the 9+ years I've been living in the city. I've never had a reason to go anywhere else. She knows what makes you look good, has decades of experience. Her warmth and kindness always make going to see her a pleasure. Pros: Fantastic cut, warm atmosphere, incomparable experience more

Always great color 10/17/2009

I've been going to Riah for 8 years, and now my best friend goes, my mom goes, my aunt goes, colleagues go. And they all keep going. Ann's color is great, she always listens to what you want, and she always sends you out the door looking great. She's cut my hair short, trimmed it when it's been long and is always spot on. I can't recommend her highly enough! Pros: Ann is amazing more

Exceptional & Intimate Salon 9/12/2009

I went to the Riah Salon after doing some heavy research through lifebooker . I wanted to find a new place that had gotten good reviews but where I could also get a good discount since I'm unemployed and I have to say, every review was outstanding. Ladies & Gentlemen: I've found an exceptional salon! I've exhausted countless salons in NYC and am extremely picky about my hair b/c it's thick, wavy and a pain to maintain. I'm always trying to get a certain bob/shag haircut that has a lot of layers, is angled, thinned out and must be very evenly cut, but most of the hair stylists I've been to have messed up achieving this kind of cut for me, and I've always left these salons, (keep in mind we're talking high-end, expensive salons as well as just the average salons) very frustrated with the results. Back to Riah... so I had Devon as my hair stylist, (not Ann who's the owner and was busy working on other clients) and I must say Devon was a wizard with the scissors, razor (for thinning out spots) and good conversationalist. She asked me important questions about how I usually style my hair and what styling products I use. This impressed me b/c she was cutting, drying, then cutting my hair dry too, (which is helpful in my case) b/c it's all about how it'll look the next day when I'm the one styling it, not when most stylists overly style your hair so that you can't really tell what it'll look like when you're left to do your own maintenance, and then you look in the mirror and see your style looks different than when you were at their mercy. In other words, she had a realistic approach to cutting/styling my hair and I liked that. And she was a really nice, down to earth and low-key person who really knew what she was doing with my hair. I'm very happy with the cut, (even after styling it days later) and with a lifebooker discount, it was very reasonable, ($60.00) though I guess for being a funky, well-known (by some celebrities too) salon in the Soho area, their regular prices aren't over the top either. I would definitely go back to Devon (or Ann) again and I look forward to it. I'll need a hair coloring too and I hear that they only use holistic and safe kinds of hair coloring products so that's good to know. They both made me feel very relaxed and welcome and I'd say it was the most unpretentious and mellow salon (for that area) I've ever been to. I would've given my review 5 stars but I took one off for the space of the salon and to me it was the only downside... Folks, it's a really tiny salon which surprised me and I'm not sure how they maneuver themselves around, but they do with the 3 chairs that are in there. I understand the salon has been there for years so that's the way it is, but I bet If there were more space in there, you'd be waiting for your appt. amid a long line of customers. I might be giving away one of the best kept secrets of a good hair salon in NYC and if I praise them too much, they might end up having a long line of people wrapped around the block waiting to be clients of these two stylist gurus. Devon, you really rock... thanks again! Pros: Very experienced stylists Cons: The salon is very small more

Go Team RIAH! 5/20/2009

I never worked with hair stylist's quite like this. I went in and knew what I wanted but didn't know how to express myself. I talked, they listened and I walked out with exactly what I invisioned! I've been going to Ann and Devon for a while now and I have never once left disappointed Pros: Quick, quality and artistic more

One of the best... 5/18/2009

After a few days letting my color settle in, the orange has faded and it looks better though not exactly what I wanted. I can rest assured that a few more toners and it'll be the way I want it... and I can go back to Ann for highlights again within 6months or more and hope it works out ! \r \r Small salon, very personable, quick service with a focus on healthy hair. Pros: Gentle hair color, Great with curly hair Cons: May need time for highlights to settle in..... more

Gimme Shelter from the Storm - and then some. . . 4/30/2009

These dear, talented craftspeople have only one item on their agenda: to make you look as good as possible. Given the level of their expertise, it's been a win-win situation for as long as I've been a faithful client (almost 10 years? No way!) My headline comes from the fact that I can be having the worst possible day when I show up at Riah; but by the time I leave, sanity and order have mysteriously been restored, in addition to a much better looking me. Pros: Great style, vibe, and service Cons: That there is only one Ann and one Devon more

Great for men's haircuts too 4/29/2009

I've been seeing Ann for about three years and have had consistently great experiences. Ann and Devon are friendly and helpful and most importantly do a great job with hair. I'm probably typical for most guys in that I don't give my hair a great deal of thought on a daily basis - but that is what Ann is there for, she makes me look good without having to think about it! Pros: Great haircuts Cons: ?? more

Best Salon in NYC! 2/5/2009

Riah is the best salon I've ever been to and Devon is just GREAT!!! I moved to NYC 6 months ago and was put off by the really expensive prices of haircuts at good salons. After tons of research, (I'm really picky about who touches my hair, bad experience), Riah had the best reviews. All of them were positive and now I know why. I'm not one to sign up for things to write reviews, but Devon did such an EXCELLENT job on my hair, I just had praise her on here. She listened to me and consulted with me before she even started. This is the best cut and color I've ever had and she taught me how to style it. I HIGHLY recommend Riah and Devon to anyone looking for a great salon experience!! I will definitely be going back!!!!! Pros: Everything! more

RIAH, best in SoHO 1/23/2009

I have never really been ever to control or manage my naturally curly, frizzy hair. Even when I thought I knew what was doing by bleaching and straightening it. Devon is a magician, she transformed my blond frizz back to its rich caramel golden color and gave me a cut that really flatters. I will NEVER buy another bottle of hair color. Devon taught me product, product, product, I love A G re-coil, details, and Xtramoist. Thank you Devon for my soft curls without frizz. Pros: Friendly and very knowledgeable more

Great cuts, colors, and atmosphere 1/21/2009

Every time I go to Riah I leave with a haircut that is both stylish and trendy without being too over the top. I'm the kind of person who impulsively cuts my hair and find that not only do I leave satisfied with the end result but like I've just left friends. The stylists not only know what they are doing but make great suggestions and give helpful tips to make the most of your new 'do'. The long and the short of it is Riah is fabulous. more

The only person I trust with my hair 1/5/2009

What can I say about Ann that hasn't already been said?? Ann is the only one I trust to cut my hair and I am extremely picky! She just KNOWS hair... My hair is difficult to deal with, but Ann is always able to work her magic and make it look awesome. I'm not coloring my hair presently, but she helped me transitionfrom bleach-blonde back to my natural color, so I know she's great with color too. And on top of all this, Ann is a wonderful and empathetic person, and just great to be around. The salon itself is warm and cozy and feels familiar even if you've never been before. Good vibes at Riah, all around. Would recommend this salon to ANYONE! Pros: Good vibes, great cuts more

Simple and Sweet, THE BEST! 11/30/2008

I won't go anywhere else to have my haircut. Anne knows what she is doing, listens and I always have a good experience at the salon and with my cut afterwards. Plus the salon is located in a great area shopping in SoHo or out to dinner in the East Village. more

Color Specialist---BEST ever 11/5/2008

Ann is great for color and cuts. Her opinions can always be trusted and she is always very current with trend and styling...never the same old thing. It's nice to be able to just relax in the chair and trust that you will walk out looking amazing. more

Wouldn't Get My Hair Cut Anywhere Else! 10/3/2008

I've been getting my hair cut at RIAH for years, since Ann was in the East Village and, along the way, have sent many friends and colleagues over too. Ann is an excellent hair stylist and colorist as well as being a great friend. An appointment with Ann not only means a fabulous new cut, but also a thoughtful, engaging conversation. RIAH is like an extension of my family - I wouldn't go anywhere else. Devon is a great addition to the family, too. Pros: People, Skill, Attitude, Comfort, Innovation, Caring more

best haircut and color in NYC 9/27/2008

I used to hate getting my hair cut - it was always a traumatic experience\r UNTIL I discovered Anne at Riah about 18 years ago\r FYI my friends and I that would never dream of going to another stylist, call her the 'hair goddess' \r I have also used her creative talents on many photo shoots - she's brilliant\r \r It is always a relaxing experience getting a cut and color from Anne and Devon.\r They are the best. more

Best Salon Experience! 9/26/2008

I love going to Riah. The atmosphere is chill, and very relaxing. Ann and Devon always make sure I am taken care of. I have been going to Riah for years, I love the service, the products they use (and that they do not shove down your throat like other place) and the great advices they give. They'd been there for my wedding, and did an amazing job! Pros: Attentive service, great price more

The best colorist in NYC 9/25/2008

I'm a fussy Brit journalist who for years struggled to find a decent colorist in NYC. And believe me, I tried: Sally Hershberger; John Barrett; Antonio Prieto, etc. Besides being treble the price, none of them come anywhere the skill level and completely satisfying experience of having Ann at Riah do your hair. \r A friend recommended Riah after I had some disastrous highlights done for a story--I thought I was going to have to get my head shaved! Ann worked miracles: she salvaged my poor stressed-out locks and sent me out the door grinning with a head of glossy, natural-looking highlights. Now I won't go to anyone else. \r I love the kitschy little salon, and as much as I love the personal attention I get from Ann, I'm more than happy when she can't squeeze me in and Devon gives me a wicked wash and blow-out! Pros: Expert color and cuts at super reasonable prices Cons: None. Well maybe I do wish the salon were closer more

great cuts and wonderful people 9/25/2008

I have been getting my hair cut by Ann since she was in the East Village. She's wonderful, fun and really pays attention to how my hair falls and grows. I?ve had strangers complement me on my hair several times (a little odd on the subway - but i guess some folks are desperate.) I don?t like to ""do"" my hair and I get a low maintenance style that still has a lot of style. For several years I got wonderful color, and this year I got a lot of help growing out my color too. It?s a really great salon, with personal attention, in a friendly, relaxing and welcoming atmosphere. Pros: really friend staff, great hair cut, wonderful color Cons: not walking distance from my house more

Best Hair Salon in NYC!! 9/25/2008

I started going to Riah when it was in the East Village and when Ann left town for a while, tried a bunch of other salons (high and low end). None of them came close to being as understanding and creative as Ann. I was very unhappy with my hair for a looong time!! Then one day I was strolling in Nolita and came across Riah!!! I am so happy that Ann reopened the store. She has years of experience, but is also very ""au courant."" Her knowledge of color and the chemistry involved is amazing!! I could go on, but I won't. Thanks to Ann, my hair always looks great!! more

Ann is a rock star with scissors and razor. 9/25/2008

She and Devon are talented, funny, patient, walk you through new things and can color your hair in a healthy organic way!!!!! LOVE them. M Pros: everything...and LOVE the cozy old barber shop locale Cons: none.... more
