Food tip top... service bottom of the barrel... 1/2/2011

Let me begin by saying the food was excellent and it ended there. Had a party of 12 for what we expected to be a top notch New Years Eve dinner. Our service was by far the worst I've ever had in a supposed 4/5 star restaurant... as a matter of fact I have had better service at my local Chili's. We had an 8 o'clock reservation... at which time 4 of us arrived promptly. We asked our waiter for 2 bottles of champagne immediately and to have it set up for the table before the rest of the crew arrived so we could have a bubbly toast to ring in 2011. Thirty minutes later and our party all seated... no champagne. Our waiter was MIA and continued to be for the rest of the night.... taking 20 minutes or longer to bring drink orders... and when we had his assistants summons him to locate our drinks we would get comments such as "" would you just like an IV for your drinks."" It was now 9:40... no dinner ordered... no waiter to be found. With frustration setting in... we brought it to managers attention... which gave us about a good 10 minutes of decent service which allowed us to order dinner and at which time the waiter said "" I no longer have my other tables and I am yours the rest of the night"" which was his way of admitting how bad he had been until that point and that he would do better.... well... not so much. By 10:40 no dinner to be found and with drink glasses empty... we summonsed the waiter again and were finally served our dinners. At that time one of us mentioned to the waiter that we have been here for nearly 3 hours and if he could have dessert (which we ordered along with our meals as part of the 2/3/4 course menus they offered that night) ready as soon as we finish along with the bill.... 35 minutes later... plates gone for almost 20 of those... no dessert... no bill... no waiter. It was now approaching 11:15... we told the assistant to tell our server to cancel dessert and just bring the bill. The bill arrives with the 18% tip included. Normally I'm a pretty generous tipper and most times tip more than deserved... but on this night I couldn't let it stand. With the waiter assuming his 18% tip on a larger party without having to actually earn it prompted me to locate the manager. I proceeded to tell in detail the horrific service we received... the manager located the waiter and we continued our discussion. The waiter's first words and I quote "" what? do you think you are better than me?""... my response ""no sir... we just wanted a little service tonight and you didn't provide it and with that comment you have just lost your tip completely."" His response... "" fine don't tip me..just pay your bill and leave"" in a very loud voice. After a few more words were exchanged in louder than anticipated voices and the manager having to tell him to be quiet multiple times for his shocking comments... I told the manager that the bill will be paid once the gratuity was removed... he obliged and finally apologized once he recognized his employees' behavior. One couple left a 10% tip the rest left nothing. I found both the assistant servers and personally tipped them $20 each for their help that night... didn't think it was right for them to suffer because of another's incompetence. SO... nearly 3 1/2 hours later... our much anticipated NYE dinner turned into 3 1/2 hours of a waiterless... drinkless... dessertless... tipless meal!!! Thankfully the company was good!!!! more

Best restaurant in Detroit 1/18/2009

It is an experience to eat at the Rattlesnake. Excellent food, great filets and seafood. Service has always been outstanding, particularly with John H. as our waiter. Courses are timed perfectly, wines are outstanding. Great place for a special occasion or an occasional splurge. They have special wine dinners occassionally which are wonderful. Can't recommend this place enough. Pros: Food, service more

One of Detroit's Best! 11/6/2008

I can't say enough about the Rattlesnake Club. I have always had tremendous meals there. I love the modern ambiance of the restaurant, the view of the river, and the outdoor patio. The wine list is exceptional-if you have a chance stop in for one of their seven course wine dinners. I also love the short rib on the menu which is so tender and wonderful. The food is higher price, however the experience lives up to it. more

excellent food 7/21/2008

Excellent food, Bob Serano, the GM, exceptionally good manager. Great ambience\r \r \r \r Watch out for billing. Item billed when we had not ordered. corrected when identified.\r additional tips added when CC bill arrived. Two mistakes in one evening does not bode well and raises a question whether it is deliberate. more

Best of Detroit 7/29/2007

Looking for fine dining in the Detroit area? This is it. While the other upscale restaurants are hampered by small dining rooms and crowded spaces, this place has it all. Great good, excellent wine list, top notch service.\r \r Only caveat: somewhat noisy, but I am yet to find a quiet upscale restaurant in the Detroit area. Pros: Great service Cons: Not quiet more

Service Needs Improvement 7/15/2007

Food is fantastic but service definitely had problems. Waiter forgot to write down the side dishes we ordered and didn't even apologize! We had to ask 3 times for our side dishes and finally were told he forgot to include them. Plus, most of my family felt he treated us with some disdain and was condescending. We were there to celebrate a 50th brithday so this really put a damper on the evening. Great food but with that kind of service for those prices, we'll never come back! Pros: Outstanding cuisine Cons: Condescending and forgetful wait staff more

BEST IN DETROIT...5 STARS 8/25/2006

My husband and I have been to the Rattlesnake several times, and it's perfect every time. Beautiful decor...fabulous waitstaff...and the food is artistic in its presentation. Elegance without the snobbishness. I absolutely LOVE this restaurant! Pros: Ambience, Service, Food more

Consistent excellence 11/18/2005

I have never gone wrong when taking out of towners to the Rattlesnake. Picky eaters, foodies, dieters, and one with a suspected eating disorder have all enjoyed their meals. The food choices are wide, interesting, and well-executed. The service is prompt and efficient. Drinks are well made. Great atmosphere, expansive and airy. This is a high-end but high-value experience. Pros: Over all experience Cons: Can't think of any more

Outstanding! We live 70 miles from the Rattlesnake but would not hesitate to drive there for dinner. The service is impecable, and the food although a little expensive is well worth every penny or dollar.. Highly reccomend this restaurant.. more

Creative Wonderful Meal 7/6/2003

Our reservations were confirmed and reminded via e-mail. The prime certified angus beef was fork tender. Seafood was perfectly prepared. The calimari appitizer was creatively served and very tender. Presentation was exceptional and stylish. Service was prompt but not intrusive, very professional. Pros: Food, Service, Presentation more

Experience Rivertown Properly 8/11/2002

Riverplace is probably the best example of the potential Detroit has lurking under its nose and the Rattlesnake Club is perhaps the best way to experience this attractive corner of the city and its riverfront setting. The food & spirits are first rate and the staff is highly attentive. more
