Good burritos and wraps 11/28/2006

If you're in the Jamaica Plain neighborhood outside of Boston, the first item on your list for food probably isn't burritos. But if it is, the Purple Cactus would be on the top. Purple Cactus offers a variety of wraps, burritos and salads and while the add ons (meat, sour cream, etc.) can get pricey, it's worth it. It's so hard to find health fast food and I really enjoyed a corn and squash wrap when I ate there last. The service is fast and the place is bright and clean. The ingredients are fresh and I especially appreciated that all meals are served on real plates. Just because it's fast doesn't mean it can't feel like a meal at home! Enjoy! Unfortunately Purple Cactus doesn't have a website yet, but any search engine pulls up their address and some interesting blog comments from 'foodies' in the area. more

Excellent Black Beans and Limeade 5/14/2006

I resisted the Purple Cactus for a long time because it felt too sterile. What I finally realized is that it's a fine place for a quick and relatively healthy dinner. Anything with black beans is good, the salads are pretty good, and the thing I still crave, from my new abode in Somerville, is the limeade. On a hot summer day nothing is better than that limeade. They have some silly name for it, but it's limeade, and man, is it good. more

This is a nice, clean friendly and popular spot. Burritos, wraps, nachos, etc. Smoothies too. The ingredients are very fresh, and the food is good, if a bit bland. But the prices are about two to three dollars too much. It's amazing how expensive this place can get. Walk in for a burrito and spend 14 dollars. Everything seems to be extra -- sour cream, a small dollop of guacamole. The nachos are outrageously priced if you add anything to them. Can be as high as 10 dollars. Silly. That said, it's convenient, open relatively late, friendly. But the prices are too high. more
