Located near Poipu beach in Kauai, this is a fantastic place to grab a good, fairly inexpensive meal. I fully expected just a normal hot dog but this place is SO much more. You pick the type of topping- everything from your standard ketchup to your more colorful flavors like pineapple relish and mango fruit relish. It is a sausage and you also pick if you want it not spicy, spicy or extra spicy. This is something totally unique to Hawaii that we found no where else. And if you go here, you should definitely try one of these. It is fantastic!!!! And it is affordable! The wait was a little long, but it was totally worth it. I wish I could find something like that here. Just to note, they are closed on Sundays and during the rest of the week they are only open from 11-6 PM. Puka Dogs has been on national television and newspapers around the country. Does it live up to the hype? I decided to try it and find out! Basically a "puka dog" is a hot dog bun with a whole punched through the middle, grilled on the inside, then stuck on a hot dog and covered with relish. The toasting part adds a different, exciting dimension to the hot dog bun. And the relish isn't just *ordinary* relish: It comes in exciting flavors like mango and lilikoi, and even the mayo is flavored with real tropical fruit flavors. Unfortunately, the experience is slightly dampened when you realize how *expensive* a puka dog is (running $6 now). Add a drink and tips for the friendly teen servers, and you've got a pricy hot dog. Puka Dogs are the best. We finally tried this Hawaiian hot dog our last day in Kauai and I've been craving one ever since! Besides having a fun-to-say name, Puka Dog is a hot dog (I had the veggie version) in a warm (possibly freshly baked) bun with a garlic butter sauce and fruit relish. It was savory, sweet and oh so good. Don't be scared by the fruit relish. I was tempted to get the a traditional ketchup and mustard toppings, but I must have caught some island spirit, because I went for the mango relish at the last minute.
