Buys from puppy mills? UPDATE 9/16/2009

I posted a review on this site quite awhile ago and came across some information recently that confirmed my original post. I found it pretty interesting how the first time I wrote a review on Pride Pups there were not that many websites with information on my dogs "breeder". Well now, months later typing in "BJS AND GUYS" in the search engine pops up countless websites confirming my suspicions. I think the way Pride Pups does business is really rather disgusting. They feed you the “reputable breeders” stories, give you outdated “bloodline” pamphlets, and send you on your way with your new puppy. I would NEVER recommend this store to anyone (unfortunately prior to this I had) and I would STRONGLY recommend anyone looking for an animal to consider adopting. There are millions of animals young and old across our country in shelters that need loving homes. Stopping the purchases of pet shop animals will force the puppy mills to close and give animals the living conditions they deserve. It really breaks my heart to think that the reason my dog is not as lovable or close to humans as my other dog, may be the effects of just the first few weeks of her life in some inhumane puppy mill with no human contact or love. more

Should be CLOSED DOWN 3/25/2009

For the folks who are happy with their puppy. You lucked out. So did I. But not totally unscathed. I purchased a puppy from Pride Pups back in Febuary 01. I asked the college student where they got the puppies from and they reassured me it was from a local breeder. I got a similar answer from Specialty Pups in Narragansett. "We only use local breeders, I have 2 woman that personally check out the facility" What bull%^&* I challenge anyone that has a puppy from either place to check their paperwork. "I Love My Puppy/HoneyDew/Hunte Corporation" will be all over the paperwork. The Hunte Corporation produces (last time I checked) over 35,000 puppies a year in a factory like setting, for puppy distributors. My dog is from Farmington Kentucky, last time I checked that is not what I call local. I tried to contact the so called Breeder and it was to no avail. Looks like Laurel and Nelda (actual names) may have changed their address and number. shocker. vsp more

The Place is AWFUL! 3/1/2009

I was in the store today - just browsing with my sister and her kids. First, the place smelled horrible. Second, many of the puppies were itching themselves during our entire visit, Third, all of the dogs were very dirty - seemed more like they had recently been picked up as strays than pure bred puppies for sale. I am going to call the board of health, the ASPCA, and anyone else who will listen tomorrow morning. The place should be shut down immediately! more

Pride Pups East Greenwich Rhode Island 1/27/2009

Pride Pups should be closed down. They are very well known for selling in bred puppies, ask any Vet. My family purchased a beautiful Pekingese 4 years ago, as he grew older he became very mean at times, biting and attacking. Our Vet told us that they had put many dogs to sleep that came from Pride Pups because of inbreeding and that they have even been picketed outside their store. Sadly enough my family was forced to our beloved dog to sleep at the young age of 4. This after spending $500 for a dog specialist who put our dog on meds. Our Vet said that we had done more for our dog than many others had, however we could not save him. Pride Pups is nothing more than a Puppy Mill and should be closed by the State of Rhode Island. more

Buys puppies from puppy mills 12/7/2007

I bought a puppy at Pride Pups two years ago and decided to do some research on her background. Pride Pups would not give me any contact information for the breeder so I looked through the paper work I received when I bought the dog. The pamphlet I got with her seemed very outdated and altered. The "breeders" name is BJ's & Guys Pedigree Service out of Menlo, KS. When I try to locate information online about this breeder the only information I can find is about it being a puppy mill. This is extremely disappointing considering the amount of money I gave this business and additional business I gave them when someone I knew was looking for a dog and I sent them there. I will never purchase another dog from this or any pet store again. I'd much rather adopt a pet knowing I'm saving it's life and I don't have to worry about where it's coming from. more

Good experience 11/25/2006

I went into Pride Pups considering buying a puppy. I was a first time dog owner, and the people working help me find an appropriate dog for my living situation. I could not be happier with the health and happiness of my dog. They also gave me a lifetime guarantee against any hereditary defects or diseases, and a health warranty. I was also pleased to see that all of the dogs had blankets, unlike many other stores I had been in. One little bit though, they will not let you play with dogs unless you are serious about buying it because it will spread sickness. So do not go into the store just to play with dogs because they will ask you to leave. more

Good experience, unexpected 10/11/2005

We had not intended to buy from a shop. We were debating on getting either a mini schnauzer or a Pug and wanted to see a pup in person to help us make the decision. Imagine our surprise at finding a pup from one of the many breeders we'd been considering! He has been a wonderful pet, and shows none of the behavioral problems of a "puppy mill" puppy. I have also had contact with his original breeder so I trust his lineage and breeding. At the time we went in, the shop was well maintained and the dogs seemed cared for. I don't know if it was just because we were there or not, but the shopkeepers opened several cages to pet or reassure a pup...or in some cases to let them run around. We got a vet guarantee with our dog, and they have been great about reimbursing where appropriate per our contract. more
