Worst people ever 9/15/2009

I worked for these pair of pr!cks for 1 year, during which I saw their habits get worse and worse. By the end, they were openly doing coke in other people's homes during events! They cook in filthy conditions surrounded by vermin and over flowing kitty liter boxes. They paid us in cash (hello IRS) once a month, and at the end of november told 7 of us they could not pay us til december and asked us to work their xmas parties. Never paid us!!! 7 of us took them to Labor Dept. court where they never showed up. We won our suit, but got nothing. please email me for any questions/ info. I am forced to give them 1 star, but only bcuz I can't give them 0. Worst excuse for human beings ever. Pros: They hid their coke addiction as long as possible Cons: everthying more

Dining extravaganza!!!!!!!!! 6/26/2009

Recently we went to Prickley Pear for dinner and we were delightfully surprised!!! Dinner at the Prickley Pear is full of delicious culinary experiences. The food has never disappointed us - ever! Salads are spinach or mixed greens with an oil+vinegar dressing sprinkled with dried cranberries and walnuts or a refreshing citrus dressing . We have had a fresh fruit salad of oranges, grapefruit, mandarin oranges and fennel....um delicious! Their flat bread pizzas are unique and delicious. (Its worth it to go for pizza and salad and BYOB you can even sit outside) Amazing soups from spicy gazpacho to potatoe leek soup. Dinner purses made of huge leaves filled with polenta, topped with veggies, chicken/beef/fish+ on + on. All resulting in a magnificent dining experiences. Oh and you know those high priced wines you buy when dining - at Prickley Pear you BYOB and avoid those inflated prices. Call some friends who love to dine, buy some wines you enjoy drinking, make a reservation and go out to dinner to the Prickley Pear. You will not be disappointed. It feels like you are dining in someone's home or in the kitchen of a downtown eatery. One of the many differences is you will have enjoyed every bite of food, sip of wine, feel satisfied with the portions and no high priced parking fees! For the sweet tooth they have served freshly made chocolate chip cookies and strawberries dipped in chocolate!! Also, if you like authentic mexican cooking, on Thursday's they have a Mexican Buffet - superb. Just remember to call and see if they are taking reservations for dinner, or cater an event at your home or business. You will be absolutely satisfied and delighted! Hum.....I wonder what they are serving tonight......excuse me but I am going to give them a call!!! Thank you Prickley Pear for many memorable culinary delights! A true gathering place. Pros: Excellent food + Best Dining in Southwest Suburbs..... Cons: None more

worst employer ever 12/12/2008

I read the reviews on working for these guys recently on this site and was hoping this wouldn't happen to me. Low and behold it did. Take my advice and don't ever work for these people. Roberto is very unproffesional and resorted to screaming and swearing at me over the telephone. They are disorganzided and do not pay their employees. It is amazing to me that they are still in business they way they treat people and can't get their stuff together. The party I did do for them they forgot a couple of the items and didn't have them sent till 10:00 at night. The food also had an odor to it. Again take my advice and DO NOT ever work for these degenerates. It will save u a lot of time and headaches staying away. Pros: There aren't any Cons: Do not know how to treat people, very unprofessional more

Great experience! 10/16/2008

We have eaten there a number of times and found it to be delightful experiences. I recently recommended it to a friend for a special place to take his wife. He said it was arguably the best meal he had at a restaurant and a great experience. So it's nut just us! Understand, there is no menu but you will not be disappointed. Call first for reservations. I understand they also do carry out and catering but we have not used that yet. Pros: Listed in review. Cons: We have absolutely no complaints. more

Worst employer in chicagoland, rodents in kitchen and on shelves 9/23/2008

Mickey and Roberto are shams, don't pay their employees, run a disgusting kitchen with suspicious black pellets from what appear to be rodents everywhere, don't pay vendor bills and lie about being organic. Do not eat at Prickly Pear if you know what's good for you. Dangerously dirty, no hot running water and many more health inspection no-nos. Run as far and fast as you can. more

Not typical business practice 4/30/2008

Prickly Pear asked my daughter to assist them to cater at a private party in Dec, 2006, which she did. My daughter is still waiting to get paid for her time. My daughter and I have spoken to the owners numerous times over the past year inquiring about payment for her services. They've said, "The check's in the mail", at least 4 times. I've mailed them self-addressed envelopes 3 times, most recently on April 2, 2008. Still no check. Bad reflection of their business. more

Out of this World Food 1/13/2008

Food was amazing. My mom and I decided to give this place a try and we loved it. Expect to get a great meal, but be warned that there is no menu. We didn't realize that this was the case and we were caught by surprise when they just started to bring us food randomly. That being said, we had our doubts when we first sat down, but they faded before we were done with the first course. We were given a choice of a ham sandwich or grilled vegetable when we arrive, but we got so much more! First, there was an amazing salad with mixed baby greens, almonds, cherries, and goat cheese with a vinagrette. My mom said it was the best salad she's ever had. Next, to our surprise came a pizza! It was amazingly tasty, fresh baked on a wooden plank, just big enough for the two of us to stuff ourselves, with roasted peppers and sausage and a perfectly crispy crust. Then, was a great butternut squash soup with a sliver of parmesean on top, also amazing. The sandwiches were great too. My mom ordered the ham, which came with bree and a dijon mustard. So good! I got the roasted vegetable, which turned out to be zuccini and eggplant, both vegatbles I hate, but I ate them this time! The sandwich was grilled with some sort of a pesto, garlic drizzle and it made the veggies taste great! Last but not least we got fresh cappuccino that came with a plate pilled with homemade bite-sized chocolate-chip cookies! We were absolutely stuffed and it cost $10 each. It was an amazing value for how much food you got, and the quality. The restaurant's only downfall was the set up, which seems odd and a bit uncomfortable, but the general atmosphere is very bohemian and cute, they just need a better floor plan. I've read complaints about the service, but I think they're misguided. Our waitress was a very young girl (it's a family business) who was very shy, but very attentive. After our meal, the owner even gave us a tour of the place! Going back for sure! You must try! Pros: Food! Cons: Seating arragement more

This is a place to get sick... 12/19/2007

Wonderful Place to Host a Private Party!!! 12/6/2007

My wife recently threw my 30th birthday surprise party at Prickly Pear, after having thrown a few other events at the location and always having wonderful results. Their food is very eclectic and interesting. Everything is very fresh, and if I'm not mistaken, I believe they strive to use all organic ingredients. The appetizer pizza they served at the party with pommagranite was out of this world. The fish they served in parchment for the main course, alongside beef on a base of mashed potatoes, was also remarkable. The restaurant is BYO (bring your own alcohol). The decor/layout is unique in that the kitchen is fully exposed to a room where people can eat, complete with stainless steel tabletops. The overall feel of the decor is smart and urban. Give the place a try, but I've heard that if you are planning to just come in for dinner or lunch, it's best to call ahead. Pros: Unique decor/layout, food with a lot of flair and flavor. Cons: It's not a typical restaurant, so hours, service, and overall operation "go against the grain" - you need to experience to understand it. more
