POOR establishment! Bob, the owner, 4/15/2012

POOR establishment! Bob, the owner, loves to get WASTED! Hey, that's his issue. The REAL issue is hoe he treats STAFF and CUSTOMERS! he is old school, slow, irritable, stubborn, uneducated, rotten, but hey, if people can deal with a person who acts like a spoiled ten year old, then LET THEM EAT! more

NOT A CHAIN RESTAURANT - WORTH A TRY 7/14/2011

If you haven't been to Poppies in awhile-try again, they have a Prime rib special that is delicious. Not a good idea to go to late as they run out. Try the Eggs Guiremio, tasty for a mexican treat. A piano bar for the young folks, not bad. Desserts are good, Wine, priced about right. I didn't give it more than 3 stars because, service can be iffy at times. more

Poppie's owner is a complete jerk and alcoholic 11/16/2010

I'll try to keep this short. I live by Poppies, so naturally I made it in. It's got a 70s dark wood, low ceiling decor. It's known for its ribs. The other menu items can be decent, but nothing to travel across town for. Old folks from area retirement communites like the place. At that age, and I mean the oxygen-bottle crowd, their taste buds favor bland food anyway. OK: I'd been in a couple dozen times. Good happy hour, very nice bar staff. I got to know the main bartender, and he wasn't a happy camper here. Kept telling me that the owner was an outright a-hole jerk. ""What, that dapper gray-haired gentleman that's greeting the old folks?"" I asked. Yup. The bartender told me he starts swilling Heinekin beers at around 5 and doesn't stop til closing. And at the end of hte night this guy has a reputation for insulting customers big time. I'd heard from some neighbors that this was the case. One time they were there and the owner trash-talked a couple that'd been coming to Poppie's for years. They were flabergasted, issued some choice words, then split, never to be seen there again. So, one night after my girlfriend and her friend left, I stayed behind. At about 10 pm the owner -- again, a gray-haired dude in a suit with a moustache -- was downing Heini's at the end of the bar. I asked him ""How's it goin?"" and he replied ""I heard you're a whore."" I thought I mis-heard him and asked him to repeat what he'd said. ""You're a whore."" I'm over 6 foot and 225 pounds. Part of me wanted to clock this idiot. Instead I got in his face and said something like Me, and my 20 friends that have been coming here the past year are now your ex-customers. He sat there drunk and dazed. A complete bozo. I walked to the door without paying my $30 tab when the bartender yelled from the other end of the bar, ""Remember what I told you? See you later.""\r \r Moral of story: don't give your money to this low life. Poppie's is a hole that doesn't deserve its customers. more

Cold Food 6/2/2009

I hadn't been there in 9 years. From what I had remembered, it had been a decent place and both my girlfriend had seen their new commercials on TV and thought we should give it a try. Mistake #1. We looked over the menu and both of us had the same opinion, the menu seemed all over the place. A lot of variety of ""types"" of dishes, but very little selection. It was all over the place. After ordering the drinks that were abruptly thrown down on the table, we actually looked at each other and thought about leaving because we weren't too impressed with the menu or prices. We figured that it would be a little rude to walk out and that we should give it a try. Mistake #2. When the waiter finally came back to take our order(as un-enthusiastically as possible) my girlfriend ordered a bowl of the soup. It arrived in a reasonable time. Unfortunately, it was slightly above room temperature. The flavor seemed pretty good, but the fact that it was cold removed any positive that it might have had. We figured it was a fluke and decided to continue on with the meal. She got the steak sandwich, I got a mushroom cheeseburger. Both of us ordered Med-Rare. Both were just above Medium. The burger was cold, the cheese didn't even melt and the mushrooms tasted like they were from a can. The fries were worse. They also were cold, greasy and limp. Out of the whole plate, I ate 1/3 of the burger and 1/4 of the fries before pushing the plate to the edge of the table after 5 minutes. Her ""sandwich"" came with only one piece of bread, and the steak was tough, fatty and cold (the irony being that when the waitress dropped off the plate she said, ""Careful, the plate is hot""!) The ends were fatty and had tons of grissle. Her plate was pushed aside in the same amount of time with about the same amount consumed. After the food was sitting on the side of the table for a good 15 minutes, the waiter came by. His question shocked me. ""Would you like a box for that?"" Seiously!?!?!?!?!?!?! Never once did he ask how everything was. That was the worst food, with close to the worst service I have ever had. It will be another 9 years before I dare go back and try it again. If this site would have allowed it, I would have given it zero stars! Cons: Really cold bad food more

Mediocre 11/1/2008

Tonight was my first trip to Poppies. My first impression was good. The place was well decorated, clean and cozy. We were promptly seated and the waiter arrived right away to take our drink order. I ordered a bacon cheeseburger with a salad and my wife had the ""Eggs Guilermo"". My salad was fresh and good. So far, so good. When our entrees arrived, my opinion of the place changed. The bacon on my burger was so overcooked, it was black. I don't know how anyone would think that could be served. Despite having been skewered with a toothpick, I had to reassemble the whole thing. The cook didn't bother to put the buger on the bun. The fries were undercooked and greasy. On top of that, it was cold. My wife's dish was very mediocre, although it was hot. I didn't complain or send it back. (As an aside, I almost never send food back. i don't feel like having my food adulterated with saliva or something worse when it comes back.)\r \r The other comment I have is on the atmosphere. About halfway through our visit, the bartender turned on some music. I don't think playing Timbaland and Beyonce really improved the atmosphere. \r \r I'll probably give it one more try. The steaks and prime rib looked good. The service was good. But I definitely won't order a burger again. Pros: Ambiece, service, drink specials Cons: food was not good more

never again 6/29/2008

Let me begin by saying our visit to Poppies this morning for breakfast was at least the tenth time that my wife and I have gone. In the past, the consistently poor service was very annoying but overlooked due to the decent food. Being that we live in the neighborhood and enjoy this style of food, we really wanted things to work out. We just assumed any meal here would take some time and planned for that. Today's experience was pathetic even considering how low the bar had been set. They weren't very busy, yet our food took nearly 40 min to arrive. The pancakes and toast were cold and hard but tasted ok. The homefries were bordering on raw. I twice sent back my mexican omelet, which the menu described as containing ""green chiles"". It kept coming back as scrambled eggs covered in pork green chile. I told the waitress several times that I don't eat meat, but she apparently didn't hear me. We finally gave up and left without eating a proper breakfast. I didn't notice until we were back in the car that she charged us full price for everything including the omelet I never ate. I hate chain restaurants, but this particular piece of real estate would better serve the community if it were converted to an Applebee's. Now I'm going to do what I should have done two hours ago and just make my own breakfast at home. Thanks for nothing, Poppies. Pros: nice TVs Cons: everything else more

Best Least-known Breakfast Joint 1/9/2007

We only go here for breakfast and it's always wonderful. Lovely yet inviting restaurant that caters to all. Kids too. We take our young children and it's no problem. We do not like to eat at chain restaurants so we stumbled upon this by chance for a weekend breakfast. It's a hidden gem for breakfast. Fantastic specialties (try the mexican burrito specialty), standard but good pancakes (great for kids), good cinnamon rolls and as good as anywhere egg/ bacon entrees. The best part is you can always be seated- even on the weekends- reasonable prices and quality service. Highly recommend this restaurant for breakfasts! Pros: Can always get seated, quick service, great breakfast more

Horrible Service 11/28/2006

I went to poppie's expecting a nice meal (it had been highly recommended by a friend) with a good atmosphere. What I got was quite possibly the worst dining experience I have ever had. Our waitress, after taking 20 minutes to even approach our table to take our drink order (and the restaurant was by no means ""crowded), was completely insincere and constantly blowing our table off. The only ""special"" order i made was no sour cream (i'm lactose intolerant) and lo and behold there is a mound of sour cream on my oh so generic beef and bean burrito (not recommended). The one good thing I can say is that my friend ordered the ribs, which turned out to be well cooked and accompanied by a delicious barbeque sauce. Upon leaving the restaurant, the doorman made a rude comment to my friend. We were treated like dirt at this hole in the wall restaurant and any positive impression made by the food was counteracted by the absolutely horrible service. I will never return to this restaurant. Pros: Ribs are OK Cons: waitstaff, prices more
