Interesting idea 4/6/2007

A break from the usual 11/26/2006

Ate at the Pomelo near UCSF the other day for lunch, have been there several times for dinner. I really like this place - it's a little different than the usual - cool international fusion menu that changes seasonally, quality ingredients, decent wine list with some good local wines, fabulous gelato, sparse modern interior that is exceptionally tiny. It's fun to sit at the bar & watch the cooks prepare your food, or sit at the (other) bar in front of the window and people-watch. Good luck getting one of the 2 tables though. Sometimes I just get take-out because it's more comfortable on my couch. I prefer it for dinner instead of lunch - lunch was insanely crowded, and the menu (& prices) pretty much the same as dinner - I like the lower lighting in the evening, the chance to order some good wine and savor a meal. The food is mostly really good. A couple things I've tried were just so-so (the pastas especially). But since the menu changes often, it's an adventure trying new items. Pros: Unique & seasonal menu Cons: Very, very tiny more

Fresh, clean, unique food! 11/11/2005

Yum! The food is fantastic. The hosts are almost always SWEET and friendly. They really add to the experience. It is an easy restaurant to navigate for those of us with severe food allergies too. Downsides: The environment isn't very cozy. Beautifully lit, great art, great size room but the seats are hard and the air is cold. Also, the owners can be a pretty bitchy. Don't let that stop you. The food is really outstanding! more

Good food and big portions 4/6/2005

I'm surprised at the negative comments about the food, because if there's anything that recommends this place it's the cooking. Pomelo serves up dishes far more sophisticated than its size would suggest - it's a little labor-of-love place that's dying to be a full-scale restaurant. Dishes I liked include the beautifully done Cuban steak, and the healthy soba salads with nice, gourmet ingredients. I live nearby and should go more often but I don't because it's the devil to sit in here, it's so tiny. If you end up perching on the countertop on a stool, it's uncomfortable. Service is iffy. The portions are generous and the prices are decent. Everyone should try it once. And yes, it's really a brilliant place for ""a first date"" if you're unsure about the person, that reviewer nicely sums it up! It's not too romantic, yet it's intimate and not too noisy. Pros: Great cooking, Good prices, Good ingredients Cons: Too small, Uncomfortable seating, Iffy wait staff more

Delicious 4/6/2005

I love visiting this spot. The staff is always friendly and the food is always excellent. My favorite is the Koh Samui that is flavorful and delicious. Plus if you sit at the bar you get to watch them prepare your dish, which is a fun treat. Pros: food, staff, ambience Cons: small location more

Regular Patron 9/20/2003

My girlfriend and I love this cute LITTLE restaurant: their prices are fairly reasonable (though raised about a year ago), the location-themed menu is always interesting, and stand-bys like the hanoi rolls or the lanzhou egg noodles with seared ahi are really good. Plus they have Singha beer and gelato! Pros: Reasonable, Vegetarian-Friendly, Reliable Cons: Tough Parking, Very Few Tables more

Dinner at Pomelo 8/10/2003

I had a wonderful time the other night at Pomelo. I come often and for once in my life can almost say am a regular at a restaurant. The food is consistent specially my favorite the Havana which reminds me of being in NYC having lunch at a trendy ""fonda"". Friendly staff and frequent menu updates are a plus. Pros: inexpensive, eclectic food Cons: location, size more

burned sauce 8/7/2003

After hearing so much about it, a friend and I tried Pomelo last night and were extremely disappointed. I ordered the Pasta with bologna sauce and found the sauce to be burned and the pasta over cooked. My friends dish wasn't fabulous either. Considering the other reviews, it could have been an off night in the kitchen. I might return and see if there are other dishes on the menu that are tastier, but only as a last resort. Pros: inexpensive, menu variety Cons: cramped, loug, inconsistent more

I'm addicted to this place 1/11/2003

I am such a Pomelo fan. In fact, there was a period when I was going to this restaurant several times a week! The menu is fresh, simple and delicious. Service is good. Nice, cute, ambience. Affordable prices. I am addicted to the seared ahi tuna dish. But, realize this restaurant is TINY. Pros: affordable, good, fresh food, nice service Cons: small more

Definitely one of my favorites 10/22/2002

This place is so small, but that's where the charm of this place. This place can only seat about 15 - 18 people. The food is sample of Asia and Italy. What I like about it .. is you can watch the chefs cook your meal in front of you. Very tasty and affordable. I love neighborhood places like this. You can't beat it. Perfect for a first date if you are trying to determine if there should be a second date. Pros: food, quaintness more

so simple, so good! 10/10/2002

I really like this little place. The food has always been very good, and the prices are great for the large portion sizes. Bravo to such a small venue. Pros: great food, great value Cons: you may have to wait, sometimes crowded more

Yummy 9/30/2002

I like going to Pomelo at least once a week. The staff is always friendly and it's fun to watch the kitchen prepare the plates of food. The food is consistently good particularly the Asian dishes. Fun place to go by yourself and end up chatting with a fellow diner or the chef. I've recommended it to all my friends. more

Pomelo? Tasted like Pummice! 9/14/2002

We ate here, and will not be coming back. You get what you pay for - cheap, so-so food. The discouraging thing is that we ordered the $13 dollar special: coconut curry, fish, two other seafoods, on 3 cups of plain rice. Four bites in, we agreed that it was bland, overcooked, and could barely taste the coconut curry. I put the uneaten plate of food on the edge of the table, hoping the waiter would see it. He finally did, five or ten minutes later. We said we were not happy with the meal, and he still charged us. My wife and I shared a noodle and chicken meal, our other order, which turned out okay. I'm not hankering for more of the food. Again, for the money ($ 1 bread, $ 8 entrees), it's palatable. We're not going back due to the lack of service and bland flavors. more

Quick meal 9/12/2002

Good food, fast service, friendly chef (she was friendly and open to chatting about food and restaurants). Had to run through the menu a few times before making a decision, lot's of familiar dishes but with a little of this and a little of that...just enough to make it a bit different. Try it. Pros: fresh ingredients, knowledgeable chef, creative more

Cheap indeed! 8/30/2002

I chanced upon this small restaurant by accident. The pomelo on the store front intrigued me and I'm glad it did. The spring rolls are oh-so delicious. The Thai coconut curry is really good. Portions are plentiful for really hungry diners. Space is limited so it's quite intimate and cozy. Pros: Open kitchen, Friendly, Inexpensive more
