Best all around Thai food. 4/24/2006

If you want a truly authentic Thai food then go to Plearn. They do not make Americanized Thai food like other places. This restaurant has been opened for over 15 years and it's one of the best in the Bay Area. The Yum Nua is to die for and Pad Thai is awesome. I'm Thai so I know what taste good and doesn't. Pros: Good Parking, Inexpensive more

Berkeley Native 11/4/2005

I completely disagree with the previous post. This is the BEST thai resturant I have found since movign here. Having travelled to Thailand and experienced authentic Thai recipes for many years, I believe that Plearn's is the best Thai kitchen around. And if you like it Thai spicy, tell the waiter and it will come out flaming. Not some mediocre spice for the average joe. If you like it hot, and tell them to turn on the heat, get ready for the fire. Allen Pros: Taste, Atmosphere, Service more

Had Better Thai Elsewhere 1/8/2005

The food is really below average. We had the curry and it came luke warm, gee, wonder how freshly made that was! We also had the barbeque beef salad and the beef looked and tasted sauteed instead of barbequed. Too many shortcuts taken at this Thai place, you can find better food at Cha'am. Pros: fair prices, bigger portions Cons: , so-so food more

Thai delights in Berkeley 2/13/2003

Berkeley has tons of Thai restaurants but Plearn's stands out by far as the best in town. My friends and I have been to Plearns's on many occasions. For starters try the Tunyumgon soup, a hot and very spicy soup with vegetables and seafood. Plearn's also have some of the most delicious curry dishes. Green curry with chicken is my favorite. The restaurant will suit your preference for how spicy you want your dishes to be. A medium spicy curry dish can burn your tongue, so beware! For seafood lovers, try the combination seafood in spicy Thai garlic sauce. Pros: Cheap menus, Great curries, Friendly service Cons: Can be crowded more

A Rare Jewel in Berkeley 10/27/2002

Plearn is definitely my favorite restaurant in Berkeley. Not only does this restaurant offer an authentic Thai menu, you will also receive excellent service. The waiters, hosts and servers are very helpful and very very nice. Try different dishes on the menu, and you'll be in for a pleasant surprise. Pros: Good Parking, Inexpensive, Nice lighting more

Searing Spices Make Sniffling a Pleasure 5/12/2002

Though Im not a vegetarian, I cannot go to the Plearn without ordering up a helping of Pad Thai J. Absent of seafood and meat, the spicy dish still has plenty of flavor with crunchy vegetables, a sprinkling of peanuts and lots of scrambled-egg bits. If three-hanky food (you can always ask the kitchen to tame the spices) isnt your cup of tea, order the sweet and sour chicken. Beautifully presented in a hollowed-out pineapple, this isnt the deep-fried version found at fast-food shops. Succulent pieces of chicken are swathed in a light, sweet sauce with crunchy hunks of pineapple and peppers. Get an appetizer or two, eat family style and theres still enough to take home for lunch the next day. Pros: Reliably Delicious, Generous Portions, Good Service Cons: Limited Parking more
