Nightmare Experience 11/29/2011

I've heard this horror hole referred to as Overlooked Hospital.I only wish I were. A month later & I still have BAD flashbacks to the HORRIBLE way I was treated as a patient. Forget the grand piano in the lobby for the Benefactors to see.I was in cardiac care, & they have what they call "sitters" which are people (majority from Haiti) who LITERALLY sit at the foot of your bed & monitor your every move, like guards with an attitude. If I got up to walk out of room to get a towel to wash(NEVER was I once offered a change in hospital gown etc) they were annoyed.& the nurses? for the most part they were young kids barely out of school who often were spiteful. & forget monitors.I don't know why mine were even on,forever falling off no one checked,a JOKE. I am middle aged & relatively fit, NOT something they wanted to see & I witnessed & heard how rough they were with 2 diff elderly roommates in beds, so clearly I being up & mobile was NOT what they were accustomed to & they didn't like it one bit. They should be ashamed.I was so depressed. & one day a woman came in with trained dog(sheltie) & I was elated, having had Shelties & missing my own dogs. The dog liked me & the woman said we'll stay awhile longer, but in came a young nurse who had been at her cart outside my room & did NOT like me & said you can go now with the dog she needs to take her pill. Turned out this "PILL" was nothing more than a vitamin just added that could have waited 5 minutes.Spiteful indeed. The day I was being transfered to another hospital for a procedure they didn't do(Thank GOD)a new "watcher" came in & tried to follow me INTO the bathroom. I told her NO, & said I was leaving.I got dressed to go & she flipped about me not being in a Hosp gown.Insane.I when to the other Hosp(few miles away) & sanity preveiled! No more dirty room, no watchers just professional compassionate care. The diff. was astounding! I'm speaking up because people HAVE to. If no one says anything this treatment of patients will go on. Overlook needs to be Overhauled!!!! more

Terrible serive at ER 2/8/2011

We had to wait 35 minutes and were still not seen by the Triage nurse. My husband cut his finger and he was in terrible pain and the towel was covered in blood - finally we left and went to St Barnabas in Livingston NJ and were seen immediately. Will NOT visit ER in Overlook, Summit again. Jan 2011 more

Unfortunate patient of Overlook Hospital 1/11/2011

I unfortunately had 2 episodes of unprofessionalism and incompetent care from the staff at Overlook. In 2003, my son was in the pediatric ER, sat there for over 2 hrs before anyone came in. The synovial fluid that I brought was left on the floor & not acknowedged even though I had informed them the doctor had his prescriptions orders with the fluids. In March 2010, I myself was a patient in the ER for a tick bite; the doctor removed the tick, gave me an antibiotic while there, but told me not to take the prescription unless I started having symptoms and to have blood work done in 6 weeks because Lyme's disease doesn't show until then. He didn't test the tick for Lyme's disease or any other diseases. I decided to take the antibiotics before developing symptoms; went to my primary doctor had all types of blood work done & found out I have RMSF not Lyme's disease. Overlook NEVER sent the tick for tests, never followed up and sent me a bill for $600 for the ER and $150 for the doctor! I am comtemplating on paying the bills. more

Very Disappointed 10/18/2010

I worked at Overlook Hospital for 12 yrs 16 yrs ago. I absolutely thought Overlook was the Best hospital in the area. After moving out of state and returning to the area to deal with health issues of my elderly in laws, that has changed dramatically. My mother in law passed last year at Overlook. Not one person informed us of her change in status to the ICU so we showed up to see her and the bed was empty and the room was being cleaned. The nursing staff stated that she was "gone" 20 mins later we found out that meant gone to the ICU. That took a great toll on my 88 yr old father in law. Then my father in law was admitted this fall. Again no continuity of care, no communication with family or fellow Drs and RNs caring for him. He did not have meals for a full day, the RN was rude when I asked for food for him, she did not know that he had not eaten and was "too busy to get him food, go to the coffee shop and get him something" she said. When it came to discharge we had a social worker who was very rushed and difficult to understand. His RN was preparing to leave for the day and was unable to do his discharge, mind you it was 2 hours before her shift changed, I know I asked. I also informed her about my father in laws rights and demanded to be discharged now or there would be legal action. Guess what, we got discharged by the charge nurse who was one of the ruddest people I have every had the displeasure of meeting. I used to be proud of the fact that I had worked at Overlook, but now I don't even want to remember that I once worked there. We have since moved my father in law out by us out of state and will no longer need to deal with Overlook. Oh I forgot trying to get the information from his most recent stay at overlook forwarded to his new Drs has also been a nightmare. I can only hope the nightmare ends soon!! more

uncaring staff 11/10/2009

My son was brought in by ambulance and was directed to sit in the waiting room, he was vomiting and so dizzy he could just about walk. The admitting nurse was rude and cold. The doctor and bed nurse was overworked. The staff did not care for my son . If I had not been there he would have been virtually ignored. Such a shame. Avoid if you can! more

Disgusted 11/5/2009

My aunt spent over a month there with an undiagnosed, aggressive, cancerous brain tumor. She was passed around from doctor to doctor -- no one wanted to take charge of her case. In fact, two of her doctors went on vacation right after they initially 'treated' her. They dithered to the point where her case was deemed essentially hopeless and she was sent to a hospice to die. When I asked about chemotherapy, I was told it was 'expensive' by one of the coldest human beings I have ever encountered. They are supposed to be experts in neuroscience, but they did almost nothing to help prolong her life. I am so outraged as I write this review , I will just sum the experience up in one word: inhumane. more

Terrible Doctors - Should not be allowed around people! 9/30/2009

I recently visited the emergency room in tears with incapacitating back pain. The attending physician refused to examine me or investigate the cause of the pain. He took no x-rays, performed no tests and ignored my request for examination and treatment. He told me to take Motrin (which was contrary to the advice of my obgyn). He refused to confirm whether I was pregnant, even though I asked that he do so before recommending medication. His lack of empathy and professionalism was astonishing. Although Overlook is the closest hospital to my home, I and my family will never seek treatment there again and will avoid any doctors associated with Overlook. more

outraged 7/21/2009

inferior and uncommunicative doctors. Doctors change, do not know patients and give conflicting reports. Absence of specialists (hepatology)With exceptions, nursing staff should improve. A painful and exhausting experience. So sorry that I neglected to find a better facility for my son. He died there at age 37. Their attempt to cure him was based on "a trial and error" approach. Noone seemed to know anything. STAY AWAY FROM OVERLOOK! more

Good ER 10/4/2005

I have been to this emergency room twice in the past year. The facilities are very nice and updated. The only downside is that there are not enough rooms and, often, you are on a bed in the hallway. The staff is excellent and very attentive. I had no problem having my ER records sent to my regular doctor for review. You really don't get lost in the shuffle in this ER. more
