Pine State Biscuits

I had the biscuits & fried chicken with blue cheese dressing on it with bacon. Great tasting but could have used less lettuce more

My wife and I were on our way back to Idaho and thought lets see if Portland has any places that have been on Diners Drive ins and dives. We chose this place because we remembered the show. \r \r We were shocked about the wait but didn't mind at all. An hour or so later we got out biscuits. \r \r My wife thought it was okay and liked the biscuits, she didn't care much for the gravy. She said it had a weird after taste. \r \r I was the opposite. I loved the gravy and couldn't get enough of it. I liked the biscuit but thought it was just as good as back home. My wife finished hers and there was a lot of gravy left. I ended up scrapping it off and basically was licking both plates clean and wanted more. \r I really like the spicy kick the gravy had. \r Would recommend anyone stopping by and grabbing a bite. This place started out new tradition. Now when we travel we stop at location that have been on the food tv shows. \r more

Boo Hoo... the lines are long/ there aren't enough tables/ they aren't fast enough... Blah blah blah! I am a very impatient person. I hate waiting in lines and I hate other people wasting my time. That being said, I did wait for 10 minutes to get my food at Pine State (no longer than one might wait at a crowded Subway) but it never felt like a waste of time. What I see in this venue is a crowded kitchen full of people trying to make gourmet food in half the space they could use and a dining room that seats 10% of what would be necessary if this was a full service sit down restaurant. (which it is not) The atmosphere is hurried and you may end up eating on a bench outside but this is a business that is making the best of what their facilities will allow. The food at Pine State is warm, fresh and filled with soul. It's creative and unique like we have all come to expect in Portland but retains strong elements of it's Southern roots. The portions are large and the prices reasonable. Just know that this experience will come at a price of comfort and convenience. So give Pine State a try,even if you are not the ""biscuit and gravy"" type, they have many dishes that will impress. For those of you complaining about: 1) Slow service/no seating, Quit bitching and go to Denny's 2) Not southern food like they make in ________: Southern food is a style, not a specific thing. It's regional, just like BBQ or Pizza. If you want the food to be what you had in South Carolina... move to South Carolina... Just keeps the lines shorter for the rest of us. Since I'm from San Francisco (but married to a Portlander, so don't flame me about it!), I am used to waiting in line for any food worth eating. I have eaten at Pine State now twice, both times at peak hours and never waited longer than 10 minutes in line. It is well worth the wait. I don't know who Reggie is, but I LOVE him! His biscuits are light and fluffy. The gravy is just right and just enough. The chicken is terrific (crisp and not greasy). The sweet tea is just as it should be and the fried green tomatoes are wonderful. It's a bit more food than I can eat, but not so much that I feel bad about wasting. Everyone who works there was very polite and friendly to me. And despite the crowd, both times I did get a seat at a nice little table. What else could a person want? It's perfect. If this place was about 1/2 the price that they charge, was within a 10-15 minute drive, and didn't have to wait 15-20 minutes to get a so-so biscuit, I would go back from time to time. In North Carolina, which is where I came from, biscuits are a BIG DEAL, taken very seriously, and these ain't even in the same league !!! Pillsbury Grands are better. Confusing menue. No seating. Surly staff. I was underwhelmed at best and will not go back. Go to Bunk instead. Pros: Nothing Cons: Confusing menu more

My boyfriend and I waited in line for around 25 minutes to try this place. My boyfriend ordered the McIsley, and I got the Reggie Deluxe. The moment we took our firsts bites, we looked at each other in pure ecstasy. They were both amazing. The McIsley is a delicious combo of tart from the pickles and sweet from the honey. Mine was just....well, there are no words. I don't have the largest appetite in the world, but I could seriously down a few of these, and happily deal with the consequences later. I didn't try the sweet tea, but I sure wish I ordered one with my ""Reggie"" biscuit sandwich because my mouth was dry as a bone after eating here. Be sure to have a glass of water near you when you have a biscuit at this place. Pros: Good Service Cons: Dry biscuits, Kind of expensive more

I grew up in Texas and occasionally make my own biscuits from scratch because good biscuits are hard to find. These biscuits are excellent. Even my wife, who normally isn't a fan of biscuits, liked these. We tried plain biscuits with just butter and butter & honey as well as a biscuit sandwich with sausage. All versions, whether plain or sausage sandwich, were very good. The biscuits are large and one should be enough for most people. They have several biscuits and gravy versions, which we didn't try because we've never seen that preparation. Someone was having a biscuit with whipped cream and berries; that looked tasty. I'm originally from Virginia and often crave chicken biscuits and fresh brewed sweet tea that I was previously deprived of out here on the West Coast. Pine State has everything I need. I recently found them after the write-up in Portland Monthly and then made the connection where they made the Oprah list of best sandwiches in America. This is now my favorite place in the city. This is a must try for anyone that can truly appreciate the perfect biscuit, made from scratch daily special side items (along with everything they serve there) and good 'ole southern hospitality.
