You should adopt, but the workers are pretty awful. 2/23/2010

I was 100% unsatisfied with my experience at this shelter. I was promised that the 'workers' would wait for me to return with cash because they don't take debit cards. I was maybe gone 10 or 15 minutes and they were leaving when I returned. I was actually sobbing because this was their 'late day' and I had to take off work early just to make by that time! The woman, apparently in charge, was in her car and drove by, stopping just to tell me, "We don't get paid for over time and we waited for 15 minutes for you. Can you just come back tomorrow?" I was devastated and she could see that, but she didn't care. To make matters worse and to upset me even more, she was to give the animal a shot while I was gone to get it ready so I only had to pay when I returned; she did not, so they clearly did not even intend to wait for me. It was completely infuriating. When my husband took off work the next day they were closed for a meeting?! Then he took off the next day and finally rescued the poor animal. She had fleas and worms. I felt so sorry for her but I felt even more sorry for the other animals there at that horrible shelter. Maybe if they got some people who truly wanted these animals to be saved and adopted out, they wouldn't be overrun. Honestly, the 'workers' don't seem to be in it for the animals. They were all lounging around instead of caring for them. They are not open on weekends and their 'late day' is 5:00 leaving no time for actual working citizens to come in. They don't work weekends... These poor animals hardly stand a chance. more

Please Adopt or Foster 7/23/2005

There are some of the most selfless and kind people working at the Pike County Animal Shelter. Although it got a bit of bad press awhile back, the most important thing is the little furry ones that need homes. I dare you to go to the shelter and not fall in love. It's happened to me, twice (technically six times if you count the mother cat and three babies I fostered). If you can and have room, please consider adopting an animal or fostering a little animal family. You'll never regret all the purrs, licks, and looks of adoration. more
