Best

Super attentive and knowledgable staff, creative menu and top notch execution. David Ansill doesn't miss a beat. My only complaint would be tight quarters and sometimes difficul...

Worst

My first visit here was teriffic, best filet I ever had. Second visit produced salty veal chops for two and a lecture from the chef about how "Americans don't understand salt"....

My new favorite... 1/9/2005

After dining here for the first time a month ago, I was delightfully pleased! The food was unbelievable! Try the oxtail appetizer and the steak if they are on the menu. Prices were average for a BYOB, and worth every cent. The service was great, the atmosphere was cozy, warm, romantic and inviting. I almost don't want to post this message because I don't want to get the word out too much! Pros: Food, Value, Service more

Impressed with food.. 10/31/2004

For special birthday dinner Pif was terrific. Both entrees- Lamb Two Ways and the fish - were excellent. Escargots in interesting Pernod sauce. Mussels OK. Unlike other posters service was friendly (imagine, in a French restaurant!) Can be noisy & cramped, so ask for a table along the wall. With 2 appetizers, dessert, entrees & 1 dessert bill was c.$100. Pros: Food, Good Parking, Presentation more

I have eaten at Pif six times in as many weeks. The variety of foods, and the constant menu changes always leaving wanting to come back. The staff is helpful and knowledgeable and the atmosphere is great for fun and social interaction. You got to try Pif!! Pros: easy parking, fun more

I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a new place outside of the typical 'center city' joints. The restaurant is cozy and the service makes you feel welcome, while the menu is absolutely scrumptious and no dishes my boyfriend and I sampled disappointed. I strongly recommend the squab and duck, and absolutely any of the desserts. I look forward very much to my next meal there. Pros: Tremendous Service, Excellent Food, Fun atmosphere more

What is all the fuss about that hole in the wall?? Food is pricey and at best ok... The only thing that beats the high prices is the high level of arrogance and disrespect by every person that works there, including the owner/chef who became extremely defensive upon asking for and listening to our comments. Whatever happened to warm hospitality and smiley faces?? DO NOT waste your money or time going there. There are so many BYOBs in Philly that are way more worth it than this icebox. Cons: , expensive, low quality food more

the food was good, the prices are inconsistant though. The dining space is very cramped and severly effected the ambiance. the food was very good, but my over all impression went sour because of less than good treatment from one of the owners(a guy). more

Overpriced and Undistinguished 7/26/2003

Two ounces of Feta and a few leaves of arugala for a $10 appetizer. Six scallops for $23. These and the $25 steak were, at best, pedestrian in taste. Not worth travelling to the Italian Market. Pros: good wait staff Cons: overpriced, undistinctive flavor, minimal selection more

My first visit here was teriffic, best filet I ever had. Second visit produced salty veal chops for two and a lecture from the chef about how "Americans don't understand salt". (it was OK for him to oversalt it, but he "won't put salt on the table") Since then his prices have gone up about 30%. His arrogance level remains the same. Pros: gnerally good food Cons: minimal decor, too many $, arrogant chef/owner more

Overpriced Attitude 5/27/2003

Once a well-priced delectible meal, the owner seems to have gotten carried away by the influx of suburbanites and raised his prices for them. Congrats to his banker but a real let-down for anyone with a sense of value. more

I went to this restaurant a few months ago and it was excellent. The menu wasn't just beef or chicken, it was very diverse. I had the duck, my boyfriend had the rabbit and it was delicious. The frogs legs were yummy too. Can't wait to go back. more

On a sleepy street in South Philly, you will stumble upon a hidden gem. My first meal, my second meal, and every meal since at Pif has been delicious, artistic, and memorable. The staff & management at Pif are among the most pleasant around. When my fiance walk our dogs down 8th Street we just glance at the menu to see what we are missing that night. The food is just that good! more

My Favorite Restaurant 1/22/2003

I have eaten at Pif twice, and after both meals both me and my dining partner swore it was the best meal we have eaten. If you get a chance, try out the Tasting Menu only offered at the tiny counter near the kitchen. Not only do you get to see the kitchen in action, you get to interact with the extremely friendly staff. At $50 a person for six courses of incredible cooking that rivals Le Bec Fin, including dessert, it is a bargain! If you want to experience great food without the pretense and high cost associated with Philly's 'theme' restarants, go to Pif. You will not be disappointed! Pros: Great Food, Service, Value Cons: Small, Crowded, Noisy more

Pif is definitely one of the best restaurants in town. If you haven't been, you must go! The food is out of this world. The last time I was there, my date had the steak--it was full of flavor and so tender he could cut it with his fork! I had the scallops which were cooked to perfection. We also couldn't pass up the lobster crepe. We sat at the counter looking into the kitchen and watched as the chef prepared the individual serving from scratch, cooked it, then stuffed it with pure chunks of lobster meat--claw meat and all! The fact that this restaurant is a BYOB makes it very affordable too! It is noisy and a bit cramped in this restaurant, but if you bring a good wine and a good friend, I know you will have a fabulous time! Pros: BYOB, value Cons: crowded more

Little Known Secret: Breakfast @ Pif 11/7/2002

Quiet French folk music, strong coffee, fresh squeezed OJ, a perfect omelette, salad and croissant, and all the newspapers you could want to spend a little time with on a Sunday morning. Prices for breakfast are Very Reasonable, and it's not too crowded... yet. Next time you find yourself not wanting to stand in line at Morning Glory or Sabrina's, try this, you'll be happy. Pros: cheap breakfast, good location, nice ambiance more

Tasty, Small, Not Romantic 10/13/2002

This is a very tasty place - not romantic (it is too well lit and noisy for that) but a great place to meet friends and have wonderful food. It is BYOB so the worderfulness of the wine is up to you! You do need reservations, which are not always easy to get. Pros: food is great, parking is convenient, service is fine Cons: tables are just ok, bathroom is TINY more

I though the food was great, but the arrogance of the owner/chef will keep me away forever. In responding to my comment (solicited by the waitress) that my veal chop was somewhat salty, the chef said and I quote " I've heard that before. Americans don't know much about salt, that's why there's no salt on the table" In other words he can over salt the food, but I can't! more

I would have to say that this is by far one of THE BEST restaurants in Philadelphia. They get all their ingredients fresh daily from the Italian Market. The escargot was superb. Even the cheese plate was delectable. if you have not been there yet, go! more
