Editorial review from Citysearch 6/16/2012

You don't get any special treatment here. I brought in old shoes like the website said, no one looked at them. No one asked me to run. they just pulled ugly shoes off the shelf to show me. Might as well just go to Big 5. Believe it or not, Big 5 offers more help, has better prices and no rude salespeople. I didn't like Phidippides at all. They were all rude. PS, nothing in this store under 100.00 and the same shoes are even at TJ max. more

I'D GIVE 10 STARS IF I COULD 10/14/2010

Unbelievably patient –especially for non-runner like me. Knowledgeable? Oh yeah. They look at your old shoes (bring them with you!) watch you walk (barefoot), have you stand up/sit down, etc. They listen to you & what you want. Are you a walker, runner, cross country hiker, or none of the above? Do you have problems with your feet/shoes? Then they bring you shoe after shoe (after shoe!) until you find one that fits you the best, period. They watch you walk inside the store (carpeted), and outside on the sidewalk (concrete) to see how it feels. No sales pitch. No pressure. No “I’ll be right back” and then the salesperson disappears into the stock room… You get one-on-one attention from people that know their ****. And you know what? You sit on a chair, and they sit on the floor so they can look/touch/examine your feet. You tell me the last time you had someone at Foot Locker do that. more

Great customer service 6/2/2010

I went in late on a Sunday and the salesperson spent an hour with me, bringing me multiple pairs of shoes, putting my insoles into each pair, and letting me run outside to try them out. I finally settled on a pair and used them on dirt trails for just under two weeks. Then the right shoe started hurting my foot badly. I took the shoes back in (already brown with the dirt from the trails), and they tried to stretch the shoe out but it didn't work. So they spent another good 30-40 minutes with me trying several other pairs, then let me exchange the shoes and even refunded me the $10 difference. I had the receipt with me but they didn't even ask for it as my purchase was in the computer (so it's a shame the reviewer below had the completely opposite experience). I'll be back when this pair wears out! Pros: Salespeople spend quality time with you Cons: You can probably get the same shoes cheaper online more

Best Running Store in LA 3/27/2010

I love Phidippides! The sales staff is great! They are very helpful and knowledgeable about running. I have ran over 20 marathons with no foot issues. They always fit me in the correct shoe the first time. Pros: Knowledge and the People are great Cons: None that come to mind more

Rude, Smug, Out-of-Touch Salespeople! 6/19/2009

The people working here are the WORST! Biggest disappointment ever! I had hopes of Phidippides becoming my go-to running store, but it is filled with the most smug, judgmental, unhelpful sales associates in all of Los Angeles. I am a serious runner training for Boston qualification, but the associates seemed to discount me instantly because of the way I was dressed and the running shoes I wear to train (Nike Lunaracers). I drove all the way up to Encino with the intention of buying a pair of insoles, a Garmin 405, and possibly a new pair of shoes. The off-putting attitude of the two guys I spoke with made me want to just grab the insoles and get out of there. I went home and the insoles didn't fit inside my shoes, so I went all the way back up to Encino, with the shoes, to give it another shot. Even worse. They guys wouldn't take a look at the fit of the insoles or my shoes and just told me to ""cut them down"" to fit. When I asked questions, the guys looked at me like I was some foolish kid. I was again turned off by the smugness and condescending attitude of these guys and left. I went home to try to trim the $50 insoles which ruined them (there is a layer of hard plastic in the insoles, making them unsuitable for trimming - way to know your product). So two trips to Encino and $50 later, I can't recommend against this place enough. I'm sorry that my appearance doesn't fit your idea of the ""typical runner"" and that your body can't handle running a marathon in lightweight flats (I ran a 3:23 in the Lunaracers without really trying, had NO pain, muscle tear, soreness, straining, or swelling after the marathon - why don't you overpronate on that), but the way you treat people who are looking for advice and want to spend money in your store is inexcusable. I went to Roadrunner to make my purchases and was extremely satisfied. The people there were helpful and not ""running snobs"" - which is not a good look anyway! I'll never go to Phidippides again unless its to dominate those guys in a race of any distance. In the meantime, I'm out $50 on a pair of bad insoles the guy told me to slice up and my anger lever has been so high that I'm hoping this review with lower my stress back to something reasonable. Pros: Easy to get you in a bad mood Cons: worst people ever work there, limited selection more

Worst Customer Service 7/17/2007

I trained for the Los Angeles Marathon with the LA Roadrunners. The 'talk' was that Phidippides was one of the best shoe stores for running shoes because runners work there and help you pick your shoes. I went to get running shoes for the marahon expecting a runner to help me like I was told. I don't remember 100%, but I think the person who helped me was a family member of the owners and was 'helping out'. He admittedly told me he was not a runner and you could tell because he wasn't in shape and seemed more interested in 'getting to know me' rather than help me find the right shoes. It seemed more like he was interested in was to 'flirt' and meet a girl. I didn't want to be rude and ask for a 'runner', which I had expected in the first place. He ended up recommended the shoes he was wearing which were not what my needs were and those are the ones I bought since he recommended them. They were horrible shoes and were not the right ones for me. I looked around and all of the other customers were being helped by the 'runners' who worked there. I was stuck with the non-runner. I was very disappointed and upset and decided never to shop there again. I know that they have a good reputation for their help from an experienced runner with picking the right shoes for customers, but I didn't get that help and ended up with a horrible pair of shoes from someone who knew nothing about running. I tell everyone and anyone I can about my horrible experience there. If you go there, be sure that you do get a runner to help you like you expect in the first place and not be stuck w/ someone who has no experience running and end up w/ the wrong pair of shoes. Pros: Reputation for being helped by experienced runners. Cons: I was not helped by an experienced runner and ended up with horrible shoes. more

Best running shop in Los Angeles 1/24/2007

Phidippides is an amazing running shop. Seriously. The amount of personal attention and information provided by the staff is unsurpassed. These guys spent a ton of time with me and my son and we are both thrilled with our new shoes. If you are even remotely interested in running, do yourself a favor and check out this store. Pros: Staff, product, selection, competitive prices, parking more

THE Spot for All Things Running (Especially Shoes) 1/13/2007

I can't believe nobody has reviewed this place yet! I just purchased my second pair of running shoes from Phidippides. The service is top-notch; these guys really know what they're talking about. They take time to discuss each individual customers' needs and provide plenty of insight gained from personal experience. The selection is great, prices are about average. Be prepared for crowds- I suspect word has gotten out, as people were practically lined up to put their feet in the hands of the masters.\r It's worth it. Pros: Personal attention, shoe selection, variety of other goodies Cons: Crowds more
