I shop here for my parrots because it is as good as Iowa City gets for pets, which is pretty poor in my book.
Every other place in town is dirty, the animals are poorly cared for and poorly socialized, with few toys which are extremely important for a birds development and mental health, and all animals for that matter.
Petland does seem to keep clean cages for their birds, and their birds are socialized, being in large enclosures with toys and other birds.
As far as the dogs and cats go, they are kept in small cages with no toys and there have been many occasions when I have seen puppies eating their own poo because the staff doesn't clean it up.
My BIGGEST ISSUE with this place is the HIGH PRESSURE SALES!! The staff is always trying to get you to hold a puppy or a kitten and telling sad stories about how long the pet has been there to bait the customer into buying an animal on a whim, which is the leading cause of animals being re-homed, dumped, and abused. This place is about making a buck, not finding good homes for animals.
My advice would be to buy online from a reputable pet supplier for food and whatnot, and for god sakes find a good breeder or adopt if you want a pet. You'll pay less this way anyway.
