Perry's Steakhouse & Grille

I will never be returning to Perry's again. I went this past weekend for Restaurant Week, and boy, was it a bust! First of all, the entire staff is rude and unfriendly. No one seems to smile or greet you kindly. Then, we were seated and it took ten minutes to get water and bread. Then, we ordered our food, and when the filet mignon came out, there were no knives. How am I supposed to eat meat with a butter knife? It took another five minutes for the knives to appear. The meat was not cooked properly, but we were so hungry we chose not to send it back. It was so plain...I recommend Ruth's Chris! When dessert came, again, we had the dessert trio but no spoon! Are you serious? I can't have cheesecake without a spoon!! Our waiter never came back to fill our glasses or ask us if the filet was cooked to our liking. Very bad service and horrible management! Such a disappointment from a flashy, upscale restaurant. more

This place is really going downhill. Use to be my favorite but something must have changed. Food is average and overpriced. Service is still okay but lately I have been eating in the bar for quicker attention. more

Perry's in Sugar Land is part of the high-end Perry's Steakhouse chain, and definitely one of the more high-end restaurants in Sugar Land. We know a lot of people who choose Perry's for high power business lunch or at night for a fancy occasion. The layout of this particular Perry's is not my favorite. You enter a small atrium with reception desk and there are dining rooms to the right and left. If there is no one at the front desk reception then you don't know where to go (this can happen during the slower hours). But in keeping with other Perry's restaurants, the dining area and music evokes the Rat Pack era, of glitz and glamour. The rooms are upscale yet not overly opulent in a distasteful way. I've had lunch and dinner here several times, and have not been let down by the quality of the food. I almost always get the Perry's Famous Porkchop, and every time I have it, I am reminded how impossibly large it is. The pork chop is no joke, my friends. You cannot fault Perry's on the portions, for they are extremely generous. The pork chop is served with a warm apple sauce, and comes with 4 ribs, the tenderloin, and the fattier, juicier part, which is usually broken apart right in front of you by the server, and arranged on an iron skillet. I usually eat that fatty/juicy part first, saving the ribs and tenderloin for lunch or dinner next day. The pork chop lunch (about 1/2 portion) is normally $15.99 but on Fridays, it's only $10.99 for lunch, a total steal and well worth the visit. I had a large party of about 8 come for the special lunch and despite the fact that it was a discounted meal, the waitstaff was courteous and attentive, and the pork chop unfailingly well prepared. I also very much enjoy the tuna tartare appetizer and the warm bacon spinach salad , both extremely tasty. For dessert, you can get silver cart service for their bananas foster and a couple of other desserts, very fancy, and perfect for a special occasion. What should be a nice classy restaurant is totatally destroyed by a lack of a good manager. The food is okay but nothing special for the price they charge. My girlfriends and I have a bookclub/dinner group that meets once a month, and during December we plan a special dinner and include our husbands. For the second year in a row we chose Perry's in Sugarland, and again we weren't disappointed. We ask for a table for 10 off to the side, where we can make an evening of it and not feel rushed to give up our table. The waiters are attentive, even when it is clearly a very busy evening for them. Our glasses are always full! The food is delicious and we will certainly be back again! 27 June 09 At suggestion of waiter, ordered sirloin for two $70. Total bill including drinks and crab cakes $179. What a waste. The sirloin, priced at rate for prime, was not of USDA rating (prime, choice, select). It was tough and full of gristle. Next day, cut the doggy bag contents (most of the order) into 1/4 inch cubes but still could not chew them. It was like rubber bands. I conclude this was from an unrated cow , probably over age dairy, and meant to be hamburger. Why would a fine dining restaurant do this kind of thing?? Cons: Out of control chef more

I dined at this Perry's for the second time last night with a friend. I love the ambience. The restaurant is dark & sectioned off in small semi-private areas. The service was exceptional, very friendly. My friend and I shared the jumbo lump crab cakes for our appetizer. The crab cakes were breaded & deep fried. I thought it was decent. I prefer it sauteed, baked or broiled. We also shared the au gratin potatoes. It's very cheesy which I liked a lot, but my friend did not. We both had bone-in ribeyes. We both had the same opinion on the our steaks. The outer part of both steaks were a little burned & dry. The inner part was much juicier & flavorful. I have dined at Perry's about 7 times now and each time it gets worse. The first two times I enjoyed my experience. The steak was cooked just the way I liked it and the service was prompt. The last couple of times however have been nothing short of disappointing. Not only is the service incredibly slow, but in a supposed fine dining restaurant I should not have to be begging for bread everytime I go. I should not have to be sending food back twice in a row that was incorrectcly prepared, and I should not have to add salt and pepper to my steak to give it flavor or immerse it in that garlic butter. Also when I enter a restaurant I expect for the hostess to ask me how many in your party today? Or how are you doing today? Not- what can I do for you? This place is a joke. I get more and more uncomfortable with each visit and I have to say that this last visit is the last time I plan on dining with Perry's. They are not even deserving of one star. Hence, Perry's staff if you are reading this, sorry but I can't give you anymore of my hard-earned money- you're just not good enough. Lose the snotty attitude, you're a young restaurant and you're still earning your standing. more

My girl friend and I went to Perry's this past weekend for our anniversary. Anyone who knows Sugar Land well knows that Perry's is THE place to go for anything special. The ambience, service, food, etc. are all so far above the rest of the restaurants in the area it's a shoe-in to make it your destination location when there's a lot riding on the line. We valeted up front and the valets actually opened both of our doors and then the front door to the restaurant. They weclomed us to Perry's before we'd even made it inside. Pretty rare to see valets that care about anything more than the amount of tip you give them when you leave. We were greeted by two young hostesses dressed in black suits. We checked in and were immediately escorted back to our table. To my surprise and my girlfriend's delight our table was decorated with rose petals and intricately folded napkins. My girlfriend asked if I did the petals and I didn't have the heart to tell her all I'd said was that we were celebrating our anniversary. Thanks Perry's for making me look even better. Appetizers started with fried asparagus and cherry pepper calamari. Both excellent, the calamari was pretty spicey though, be careful. We shared a chateubrian which our server sold us on before we'd even opened the menus. It was amazing. Tender, juicy, and perfectly medium rare. The sauces they served with it accompanied it well, I preferred the peppercorn sauce, my girlfriend was partial to the bearnaise. Before we'd even ordered dessert, our server brought us a plate with a huge piece of caramel cake on it with "Happy Anniversary" written in chocolate. Another nice gesture that scored points with both of us. It's nice when a restaurant will actually go out of their way to show they care about your celebration. All in all it was a great night, $150 with tip for two of us but worth every dollar. Keep it up Perry's, we're glad you're in Sugar Land! Im suprised by all the negative reviews. We love the Perry's off of Cypresswood. We always get warm, incredible service and our food is alwasy wonderful!! We especially love the sunday brunch, it is reasonably priced and the different types of Benedicts are our favorites! All the food is served with warm, delicious muffins and fresh fruits, and they have bottomless mamosas if interested. We always celebrate our anniversary there. We have also called in take out for special occation take out, and it comes warm and perfect. The chops are fantastic and I highly recommend the warm spinich salad. There is always more than enough food and leftovers. The restaurant is beautiful and the food is fantastic. Always a great expereince for us. more

I visited Perry's for the first time last winter after hearing rave reviews from friends and family. I had just moved to the Houston area from Philadelphia and was looking for a great steakhouse for my girlfriend and I to call our home. From the relaxing upscale ambiance with Sinatra in my ear to the melt in my mouth filet mignon it was excellent. Our waiter, Geoff was excellent. He was very professional and attentive without being annoying. The extensive wine list allowed my girlfriend and I to try a couple half bottles of some wines that we had never tried before that were excellent recomendations from our waiter. I actually liked that the manager just walked through the dining room and actually helped the waiter with tableside flambees instead of asking me how everything was. If I wanted to talk to the manager I would ask for him/her. I would recommend Perry's of Sugar Land to anyone looking for a great steakhouse and tell them to get the filet or the seven finger high pork chop which my girlfriend had and was the best porkchop i've ever had. I have eaten at many steakhouses nationally, and many in Houston. Perry's Steakhouse in Sugar Land can deliver a wonderfull steak, fish and wine. Its a beautiful restaurant and the wait staff are generally really good. I have noticed they seem to have a lot of turn-over among thier waiters so the tips must not be good enough to make a career working at this location - typical for suburbia. The food is equal or better than national chains like RuthsChris, Mortons The Palm. Morton's I really like but I find it inconsistent among cities, I dont like RuthsChris, Smith and Wolensky's is just Rude in NY but better manners in the South, and The Palm is better in Denver than in Houston. PappaBrothers Steak House in Houston is the BEST but it feels like NY prices - but still worth the drive!! Perry's has an good wine list but its pricey to keep the Riff-Raff out. Entree's, vegitables and desserts are really good - try the 7 finger porkchop and the Icecream ball with nuts - delicious! We're glad to have Perry's in Sugar Land and wish they'd open another Italian Grill near bye. Pros: Easy parking, elegant restaurant, good wait staff, good food Cons: Pricey wine list more

We had a wonderful time for our 20th anniversary Feb 14th. Food was excellent although most of staff seemed somewhat inexperienced all in all I would recommend this restaurant highly.Pork chop was out of this world but I am still trying to comprehend the excitement over the scalloped potatoes. I would rate them only a 6, the asparagus were much tastier. If you are looking for a restaurant that offers good food and ambience then you will not be disappointed. We were actually most impressed with the service from the valet upon arrival to our departure we were treated like royalty. Thank you for a memorable evening. more

We had a horrible dining experience.... Fine dining should be fine dining. The staff is not well trained. There are far to many other GREAT restaurants in Houston - don' t bother going here. From my table I could see the waiters arguing about service. Our waitress didn't know how to serve wine and spilled the wine all over the glass and on to the table....repeatedly each time she refilled my glass. And then the cigar smoke started to overcome the dining room. It was beyond bad. They said that a door had just been put in to separate the dining room from the bar but, no one seemed to keep it shut and it didn't seem to help at all. We had a family birthday celebration at Perry's Sugarland last evening. It was virtually perfect in all respects, from valet parking through to prompt offering of the check. There were six adult couples and a well behaved one-year old spanning four generations. Service was excellent with no inseemly delays. Our server knew his business, placing plates and glasses properly, serving the ladies before the men, and promptly clearing courses. The appetizers were quite good, although the turtle soup with carafe of creme sherry did not approach Bookbinders' of Philadelphia's famed snapper soup very closely in either flavor or texture (but then, whose does)? The entrees were prepared to order and well diplayed. Among us we had steak Diane, grilled shrimp, lamb chops, and pork chops. I am not a fan of placing the entree on top of the mashed potatoes and veggies, but that is relatively common. Quite pricey, in the realm of Morton's and Ruth Chris, but of similar or better value. more

We had our company holiday party for 11 people here. Out of the gate they didn?t have three of our wine selections. She couldn't keep up with anything. She brought the red wines we ordered alone, didn't pour for all of the people who said they'd take red (myself included). The white wines came about 15 minutes later. The champagne nearly room temperature according to three of us, but waitress said it was probably just us because it came from the cooler. Mixed drinks coming from the bar weren't any better. Service was erratic and she simply could not provide service to meet our needs. And we aren?t picky! The appetizers were slow, as was the food. We ended up asking for bread while we waited; it wasn?t offered. The menu described the steak Diane as coming with rosemary potatoes and seasonal vegetables but it?s not your steak with sides. It's your steak with over-grilled vegetables underneath it. Their ?family style? manner of serving sides for two or more created chaos at the table since she placed them in the middle and no one knew what they were or who ordered them. When she came around with the dessert menu, she didn't offer dessert to everyone. We all were talking and I didn't know an order was taken until the other orders arrived. The dessert I *would have* wanted took 20 minutes to prepare, so I passed. I ordered hot tea with milk, English style, and only got the tea. I asked about the milk, and she came back with a nice tall glass of milk, which was a mess to pour. It's not like we were out of our seats milling about. We were all engaged in conversation and stayed put, and paid attention the few times she addressed the table. I thought maybe the issue was a waitress inexperienced with large groups. Reading the other reviews, it seems status quo. I didn't see the bill so I can't speak of price and accuracy for all of this, but whatever it was is too much. Mandatory gratuities for large parties should be outlawed. Pros: The steak tasted rather good Cons: Service, "a la carte" menu, service, in stock wines, etc. more

I took a group to Perry's for a holiday lunch. Disaster! They didn't have adequate staff, the food was far from the quality of the past, and then they padded the bill. First they brought out a bill for $1700! We had a set meal and cost, oops, they corrected it to $950. (also billed me for the cappacino that they never brought). Just say no, don't go here. I had gone to Perry's on a weekend night with my fiance and somehow, we managed to be seated in the "wine room". This room is actually more of a wine "column" (reminiscent of the wine room at Aureole) located in the center of the restaurant, extending 2 stories up with a table in the middle. I found this to be somewhat impressive...until 10 minutes after being seated. Our evening was constantly interrupted by managers coming in to fetch wine. We started with the fried asparagus, which was quite good. The spears were tender and firm, lightly battered and fried and served with a drizzling of butter. I then ordered the pear salad, which was uninspired and seemed almost incomplete. The dressing was good, but the salad overall could have benefitted from a bitter or sour element. Our steaks were lukewarm and bland with nothing more than a sprinkling of salt and pepper. What I found shocking was the au gratin potatoes. If I didn't know any better, I would think I was eating boxed Betty Crocker potatoes. And to my horror, they were topped with what tasted strangely like Velveeta. The only truly worthy praise I can give Perry's is to their pantry chef. His assortment of breads was amazing! Crusty and toasty, with a wonderfully rustic texture. I was so completely underwhelmed by my experience that I left the restaurant dissatisfied, unfulfilled and $300 poorer. The restaurant itself is incredibly beautiful, with little nooks here and there for a uniquely intimate feel. With the ambiance flooding my senses, I anticipated a unique and formal fine dining menu. Unfortunately, I couldn't help thinking it was an unsuccessful attempt at emulating Aureole and The Palm. I'd recommend going to Perry's for cocktails and maybe an appetizer, but not much else. Perry's is not worth the money for below average cold food at an above average price. The waiter was rude and slow while the managers seemed to care less. I guess when you are busy with a wait on Friday and Saturday you can afford to be slow and rude. But then what do you expect for a $400 dinner? It will be a long time before I go back, if ever.
