re: going downhill 2/7/2010

This used to be my favorite brunch spot. Ordered the mediterranean plate. The eggs were overdone, and more than hardbolied. Prosciutto was cut too thick, fruit on plate was 3 days old. Reordered the fruit, the grapes were just as rotten. There was no sauce or spread of any kind on the plate to bring the dish all together. If you say ""fresh fruit"", you should put slices of melon on the plate, not the same brown fruit you use to make the fruit compote. And the coffee, clean the coffee maker, would ya? Undrinkable! The bathroom needs to be upkept too, water was scalding hot in sink, the sink was really beat up, and in need of replacement too. The rain was clogged and the water, just kind of sat there in a brown muck. Clean up your act Ovelia! I will give you one more shot, please make it better! One good thing, tho... great bartender, good bloodymaries! Don't let success let the restaurant goto your head, clean up your act Ovelia! Will be back, one more time, see you again soon! Pros: not as eurotrashy as the rest of 30th ave, good bloody mary Cons: coffee, have let the place go.rotten fruit more

Great Place to Eat, Drink and Hang out 5/5/2009

Ovelia is the only place in Astoria with an indoor and outdoor bar. We always have alot of fun and love the food. My favorite party nights have been spent there. Pros: Friendly Atmosphere and Great Food more

Good dinner, warm night 5/1/2009

We had a nice meal a couple of nights ago when the weather was warm-sat outside, which may have attributed to the groups of LOUD people next to us. Not loud having a good time, but obnoxious loud. Started with the garlic potato dip which was delicious. We enjoy being left alone when having dinner, however sometimes the wait between checking in on the table was a bit long. We had the mousaka and just a grilled shriimp with sauteed spinach which was done nicely-I would have liked to see the what the spinach was cooked in strained from the dish a little more, but over all done well. Pros: comfortable, friendly waitstaff Cons: loud tables next to us more

Great Greek Fusion 4/7/2009

I started going to this place right after it opened and I have never had a bad meal here. I go here a couple times a month and I ALWAYS order the homemade Greek sausage...it is to DIE for! I almost always have the appetizer that has the dipping sauces and the pita is amazing. The cocktails are great too, although the wine list could be a bit more extensive. The only drawback that I found was the DJ. He doesn't start until after 10PM or so, but the music was so loud that I couldn't hear my friends that I was dining with. Just make sure you go earlier than 10PM and you'll be fine. Friendly staff, great food, what's not to like? Pros: Great food and drinks...don't forget to try the sausage Cons: Music after 10PM more

Worst in all of Queens! 2/11/2009

#1 The food is not cooked correctly....ordered my steak medium rare, came out almost well done.\r #2 Had two other tables on the restaurant (on a Friday) and the music was unbearable loud.\r #3 Apps took over 15 minutes, we ordered pita and dips. Really?\r #4 Wine was mediocre at best, cocktails were weak.\r #5 Not one apology was made about our obvious irritation of the sub par experience.\r #6 The oorly cooked food that we eventually got was still bland and chewy. Pros: right by my house Cons: terrible food, rude managers more

Great local favorite... 9/20/2008

I've been to Ovelia like 4 times & have no complaints. I mean, I've only had apps & desert, but I was more than happy with all of it. Their crepes are sooooo good & their frappes are perfect. The waitresses are always nice & attentive, even with me & my picky friends! The place is modern w/ nice decor & the bathroom is always clean (which says a lot about a restaurant). I'm moving to this neighborhood soon & plan on being even more of a regular. Pros: open air feeling Cons: none, really more

Editorial review from GrubHub 7/15/2008

Please do not stiff your customers by failing to bring everything they ordered, especially at these prices. Two stars for food quality and speed of delivery, but I won't be ordering from Ovelia again. more

a nice brunch spot 7/8/2008

Tried out this new-ish Astoria spot for brunch on July 4. Sat on the sidewalk -- comfy chairs. $14 gets you a meal plus a drink (mimosa or bloody mary) plus juice or coffee. The Bloody Marys were nice & spicy. The Ovelia Omelette was not your typical omelette (eggplant, walnut, & peppers were placed on top of the egg, not mixed in -- still tasty). My mom ordered one of their tiropita sandwiches (chicken, halloumi, tomato) -- looked delicious. The homemade sausage got good reviews, and I liked their option of braised fruit in lieu of home fries. Coffee was disappointing - more bodega than cafe, but I would definitely go back to this place for brunch or a drink. Service was nice and low-key -- didn't feel bothered. Pros: tasty bloody mary, value Cons: mediocre coffee more

Nice atmosphere, but it ends there 5/16/2008

I have been to Ovelia quite a lot actually, my wife and I live on the block and go there for brunch at least once or twice a month, and I have also gone for dinner and lunch as well. We were always attracted to the ambiance, decor, roominess of it all, but I have to say as of late, it has just been downright dissapointing. I understand every restaraunt goes through growing pains, and we all have ""off"" nights, but my latest dining experience was the icing on the cake. I brought my wife and sister for lunch. My sister told the waitress that she is a vegetarian, and she replied ""Oh that's too bad"" as if my sister had done something wrong. Whether or not she meant to, she came off as very rude and disrespectful. Furthermore, of all the food we ordered, the pita was the only part we enjoyed. The shrimp in my wife's salad was extremely overcooked and lacked flavor, actually it tasted to me like it was frozen at one point - BIG no no. I ordered the portobello burger thinking I was getting a lighter meal, but the bread was so hard I couldn't even bite into it, and there was so much goat cheese on it, it was just... overkill. I guess it did end up being a light lunch because the grilled vegetables and side salad were the only edible parts of the meal. Finally, we ordered a frozen cheesecake for dessert. Frozen is an understatement, a chainsaw wouldn't have been able to cut that thing. The bits that we were able to chisel off with a steak knife tasted so strongly of freezerburn, the three of us couldn't even finish half. At the end we just paid the check, and decided that the next time we wanted lunch, we'd take the walk down to cafe bar instead. Pros: It looks nice, is never too crowded Cons: Food was disgusting more

Nice place to hang out 5/7/2008

The place really looks beautiful and unusual. They also got this cool idea to have a bar outside when its worm. Looks like some beach bar in Greece or something. I just miss the ocean, coz coctails are all here :))\r Brunch time is tough. Its really lots of people and u might wait for the waitress forever. \r Food is ok. Nothing special to my mind, but place is nice to hang out more

Amazing food, service & atmosphere 4/7/2008

I was impressed with Ovelia the moment I stepped inside. The decor is beautiful and promotes a relaxing atmosphere. I have never seen anything like it. They have an awesome garage door that we were told opens up when the weather is nice, I can only imagine how nice it is to dine there during warmer weather.(checking out the bathrooms is a must, very very cool) The servers were all friendly, knowledgable & prompt with service. I went there for brunch & the selection was so good it was hard to choose just one thing... I would have to say the food was EXCEPTIONAL! hats off to ovelia's chef!!!! Visiting Ovelia is a must if you happen to be in/near Astoria! Pros: beautiful atmosphere, amazing food, wonderful service, great value Cons: wish I could go there more! more

A class above 2/9/2008

While watching an episode of the Fashionista Diaries I saw Ovelia in one of the scenes, upon googling Ovelia I came across Time Out NY's review -if it was hip enough for Patricia Fields then that was where I was taking the girls for our next brunch session. The following weekend we treked to Astoria to try it for ourselves. I had the stuffed french toast with Greek yogurt and honey whip which was accompanied with a side order of meat and fresh fruit. The Brunch special also includes coffee or tea and choice of mimosa or bloody mary. Monica had the omellette with feta and french fries called Yiayias omellette with a side of fruit fries and Isabella had the eggs benedict. Between the music and great food we ended up staying for hours and went back for dinner the next weekend. The service is great and the staff always entertaining. Pros: Feels like you are not in NYC. more

Nice addition to Astoria, food is delicious and creative 12/26/2007

I live on the same block as Ovelia and love the food. It is one of the more creative Greek restaurants in Astoria and everytime I've dined there the service was impeccable. I can understand Rosie's frustration but things do happen and they gave you a round of drinks to apologize. I will continue to dine here and encourage others to go as well and judge for yourselves. \r \r I personally would not take a free drink from an establishment and than give them a bad review. I'm impressed they got you a round. I've eaten in rest. where food has been spilled on me and was lucky if I got desert. Pros: Great Decor, Good Service and Food more

Excellent food 10/15/2007

The place is small but nice. I like the decor. Me and my date went on a saturday night and had the fried calamari for appetizers, he had the grilled shrimp and I had the salmon with lemon potatoes for the entree. For desert we had the frozen cheesecake. They weren't kidding when they said frozen, we couldn't even stick the knife through it, we had to wait till it melted a little. It was good nonetheless. The food was excellent and the service was quick. I would definitely recommend. Pros: great food, quick service Cons: none that i can think of more

Great brunch spot! 6/30/2007

We went for brunch last Saturday. No lines, great service, and some really interesting menu items. It's great value - for $12 you get your entree with tea/coffee, a cocktail (bloody mary, mimosa, etc.), toast and a side of bacon with almost every order. We'll definitely go back. The decor is pretty cool too. Pros: Food, good value, decor more

Try the Banana Pancakes! 6/19/2007

I had brunch here a couple of weeks ago and I had the banana pancakes and they were delicious!\r The bananas were cooked in the pancakes which I wasn't expecting. I will definitely come here again. Pros: banana pancakes! more

AMAZING 5/23/2007

Ovelia is amazing. The food is delicious, the service is great, and the scene is even better. Right there on 30th Avenue - a fun, cool, place for dinner. My boyfriend and I stumbled on it through Zagat and American Express was offering double rewards points, so the Greek Food Lovers we are, we tried it. Now, we only go to Ovelia for Greek food. Great for families, great for romantic nights out, great for girls night out!\r \r Definitely try: Figtinis. Even if you don't like Figs, you would love the Figtini! Believe me! One and you are feeling good! :-) Enjoy! Pros: Great service, great food, great scene, great Figtini. Cons: Parking is some what of a pain... nothing like NYC though. more

Terrible! 5/22/2007

I came into Ovelia expecting to have some good food and enjoy the nice weather. Instead, I got a 20-minute wait for a table, cigarette smoke blown into my face the whole time, and the wrong food! The service (if you can even call it that) was HORRIBLE, snobby and the decor was quite tacky. I ordered a salad that was served to me with things I had asked to leave out because I was allergic-tomatoes, olives. When asked if they could take it back, I got an eye roll from the waiter and a ""we'll see what we can do."" I almost left right there and then! \r \r Seating is crowded, food is overpriced and gross and staff is horrendous. The place is full of Eurotrash who exhale smoke in your face! Don't eat here! Pros: the water was ok Cons: everything else was horrible! more

  • The Scene
Greek restaurants in Astoria aren't usually known for their sense of style, but this corner spot is doing its best to change that. Earthy elements like naturally finished wood...
