I really like a few of the sandwiches and fish & chips here. However, each time I've been to the Old Town the servers have brought someone at the table the wrong food, drink, forgotten something, etc. The servers we've had have been a bit snotty and never apologized when they messed up the orders. A few times that we've stopped by around 11:45am they haven't been open but their hours say they open at 11:30am. I hope they can take their service up a notch. more

Beer Haven 3/19/2006

If I hadn’t made a resolution to cut back on beer-related calories, I would probably be here now. Old Town is a great place…nice and open, usually quiet, with a great selection of Belgians on tap and tasty (if a bit over-seasoned) bar food. It is really unfortunate that they don’t have full bar and wont seat large parties. The waitstaff can also be a little snarky (I have had both great and miserable experiences with them.) I hope they manage to stay in business anyway. more

Best Fries in Seattle! 3/11/2006

There. I said it. Their fries rule. None of these big slabs of potato sopping with grease that other pubs try to pass off as fries. These are slender, crisp, and sprinkled with herbs and parm. Yum! And there's plenty of stout beer to wash them down. more

Best Fish and Chips 12/16/2005

Old Town has the best Fish & Chips in town, according to me. They also have a great beer selection, with many rotating taps. My favorite time to go is a sunny Sunday afternoon--when the light streams in the big windows,. more

Owner Message
  • At the Old Town Alehouse in Ballard we keep things simple so we do them right. One thing that sets us appart is that we are a family friendly alehouse so you can relax with a beer while your kids munch on chicken strips. Our menu includes standard pub fare all served with style for both lunch and dinner. On the beer side we take things very seriously. We offer as our core draft selection, ales and lagers of distinction from Washington breweries with annual production of less than 10,000 barrels per year. These are the smallest craft brewers. We offer fresh cask conditioned ales from only local breweries to ensure the peak of freshness. Although the mood is generally always happy at the Old Town we do provide a designated time to be happy in Ballard from 3-6pm. If you are serious about your beer you should stop by and have a pint.

Editorial
  • The Scene
Exposed-brick walls and weathered hardwood floors reveal this space's classic Ballard Avenue pedigree, but the Old Town clearly aims for a newer spin on the hard-drinking thoroughfare. The tidy alehouse features high ceilings and a no-smoking policy, which give it an open and airy feel. The freshest part of the bar, though, is a beer list comprised mostly of Washington state fare (including less obvious breweries like Boundary Bay, La Connor and Flying Pig) and Belgian ales. A genial crowd of beer connoisseurs and clean-cut Ballardites predominates.

    The Draw
While beer is the star attraction, the large menu of salads, soups and "wedges"--sandwiches served on Bolo rolls with a house aioli--also entices. Health-conscious eaters will find plenty to choose from, but the Alehouse fries seasoned with Parmesan and secret spices are hard for anyone to resist.
