Excellent Dining 8/14/2010

My family loves this restaurant. Although pricy, it is all fresh and the quality makes it worth the price. We love the Korean dishes. We always make a reservation, even during weekday nights, as it is usually very crowded. more

Great food and service! 2/21/2010

We go for dinner and get take-out here. I would recommend to anyone. The food is always fresh and good. Crunchy tuna roll is our favorite!! Pros: It was great! more

Favorite Restaurant !! 2/21/2010

I've been dining here a few times in the past few months during the week and on weekends as well, and I must say that the food is addicting. After reading some of the bad reviews - I must say that this place gets ridiculously busy at times, and things do get a little hectic during prime time. I've never seen such a crowd on a weeknight in Newtown. HOWEVER, it is totally worth it. Food is delicious, Sushi is the best i've ever had (signature rolls) and its a BYOB. Plus, the servers are quite friendly if you get to know them. Pros: Good Variety, Great Sushi Cons: Can be really busy at times more

What a horrible dinning experience 2/18/2010

We made a reservation at 7pm, got seated until 7:35pm. Less than 10 seconds after being seated, we were rushed for orderings. We patiently waited for 40 minutes, then my padthai noodle came out. it was luke warm and the taste was not all that. My wife's sushi platter came out like a mess. Very disappointed.\r If you are looking for a nice Japanese dinner, eat at your own risk here. more

Be Careful 4/11/2009

The problem I now have after eating at Oishi, is that no other Sushi even comes close to the quality, flavor, uniqueness, creativity. I am a regular since 2003, and travel extensively. But now, I don't even want to bother with other sushi places, regardless of where they are, I always leave disappointed. I hate settling for anything less than the best, and Oishi is the best. I've never had a service problem or issue, but really, who cares? Its the food, the food. Pros: Best Sushi Cons: Ruins all other Sushi's Place more

Disappointing Cuisine 4/8/2009

We tried this place for dinner and called ahead to make reservations. The prolific pantheon of Asian delights left us feeling disappointed. Perhaps they should stick to the Japanese core competencie specialties such as Hibachi and sushi. \r To start off, the dishes arrived cold and required salt. The Thai dishes all resembled a poorly done udon noodle soup sans the noodles. How in the world does a self-respecting chef screw up green Thai curry? The chicken was cut sashimi style, and boiled, not simmered in the broth. The resulting curry was very watery and yellow, not green at all. Perhaps the recession has taken hold because this dish had no coconut milk and a kafir lime leaf was also noteably absent. This curry was so watey that it did not stick to the rice accompaniment and I should have been tipped off when the server brought over an Asian soup spoon. Green Thai curry is not soup folks! When I commented on the bland taste, I was told, ""you people like things spicy so you should order spicy next time."" Hailing from a masala based civilization, I was quite taken back and was unaware a special recommendation would be required as to the degree of salt and amount of green Thai curry paste used. This was in no way Thai cuisine, it was the Ramen Noodles version. Futher, they should, at the least, invest in decent silverware. \r Overall the experience left a lot to be desired. Be wary of resaurants the claim expertise in Thai, Japanese, Chinese and Korean food, all at the same time. These cuisines are distinct and this chef cannot pull all of them off. Not on my list of favs and I will not try it again. The Thai place in Doylestown is much better and well worth the 10 minute drive. Pros: Nice decor Cons: Unable to pull off Thai dishes more

Undecided 3/12/2009

I've eaten here twice and the second time experienced the rude service some of the other reviewers have described. Because the food is good, I am willing to give it another chance - will eat there tonight. By the way, for the folks who say there is no other good sushi in the area, try Charming Garden on Big Oak Road in Yardley. Pros: Good food Cons: Spotty service more

Sushi doesn't get any better 2/13/2009

I've had the chance to eat Sushi from coast to coast and this is as good as I've had anywhere. Sae's preparation is artful, tasty, looks great and many of the specialty rolls are originals to Oishi. I've had the chance to bring folks who eat Sushi regularly who live in LA, San Francisco and NewYork - and each one has acknowledged - it is the best they have ever had - period. Be aware the service is not always the best, but it is always adequate - for the best time sit at the counter and let Sae help you choose your courses... for sure you'll get something you might not get anywhere else. more

One of the Best Sushi Places Around 12/17/2008

I love Oishi, it is one of the best sushi restraunts i have ever been to. There food is amazing and the atmosphere are also great. They have a unique menu and special rolls you cant find anywhere else. The service can be alittle rocky sometimes but its worth it believe me! Pros: Food Cons: Service more

Best sushi in Newtown 11/8/2008

Oishi is not only my favorite sushi restaurant in Newtown it is my favorite restaurant in Newtown. The food is consistently superb. It is true that sometimes they are very busy and the service is a little choppy but it is never for a lack of trying. The staff is always friendly. The newtown yuppie roll is a favorite along with the spicy crunchy tuna roll. Pros: The food is excellent. Cons: The staff sometimes is overwhelmed. more

Great food, bad service..especially front desk 10/11/2008

Food is great..Ambiance is great...The hibachi chefs are awesome...Service is bad, disorganized. You make a reservation for a Thu-Sat evening and they are never ready with a table. People who don't not make a reservation may get in before you. Also,if you call for a take out, people on the phone are rude. more

True sushi chef dazzles 7/14/2008

A lot of other japanese restaurants these days candy coat their ""neo-sushi"" with layers and layers of sauce, by a so called chef (aka cheap labor for hire) to disguise the flavors with sugar essentially. But the owner here really understands fish and the subtle flavors of each of his ingredients. He doesn't need to smother his sushi in anything. And you can't find any of their special rolls anywhere else because each is truly unique and one of a kind...and truly delicious! I've definitely caught on to other restaurants that try to pass off some funky colored roll as a specialty...but this place is really different. Think their skill and level is at par, if not better than some of the renowned sushi restaurants in nyc. Pros: variety, fresh sushi Cons: crowded on weekends more

Bad Service 6/18/2008

The food is decent, the atmosphere is nice, but the service is really hit-or-miss. There is a particular waiter there who is not at all accommodating and is quite rude, which really makes the dining experience an unpleasant one. I have been to Oishi a few times and I am confident in asserting that the lack of service was not an isolated event. Unfortunately, Oishi is one-of-a-kind establishment in Newtown. For those who want decent Japanese, Thai, & Korean fare locally, experiencing poor service is the price to be paid. Because service is part of the dining experience for me, I am more than willing to travel to Center City Philadelphia or New Jersey for a complete and worthwhile dining experience. I will not be returning to Oishi again, as my time and money are not worth poor service. more

A regular for me! 4/11/2008

Food is excellent, always fresh and consistent. BYOB which I love. Wait staff is friendly and attentive. Environment is clean, the space is a little noisy when they have a full house. Make sure you call for a reservation on weekends. more

My Favorite 4/5/2008

I go to this restaurant almost every week. I read other reviews and agree that it is busy, but any good restaurant is. If you don't want it to be busy go on Sunday night. The service is always with a smile and all staff seems to work incredibly hard. The sushi is the best I have found, and everything I have tried beyond sushi has been delicious as well. I'm going to ask that you don't go, so that I don't have to wait even longer to get into this restaurant. Pros: Staff, Quality of Food Cons: Pricey more

Absolutely delicious - Best Sushi ever!!! 3/25/2008

This place is absolutely the BEST!!!! The food is incredibly delicious and simple - they don't try to over do it but at the same time, some of the dishes are creative and one of kind. They have a nice assortment of Korean, Japanese and Fusion-type dishes. And you can't forget about the sushi of course - fresh, fresh, fresh. The rolls are huge - plenty of fish...and if you want an alternative to soy sauce - try dipping in some of Sae's special sauces...all homemade and incredibly tasty!!! Pros: Food, Menu selection Cons: a bit on the pricier side but worth it for the quality more

Terrible Service 2/17/2008

The sushi here was good. Certainly not Blue Fin good, but good. Our big problem was the service. They were highly disorganized and confused at who should be seated next, they are a byob but did not have an ice bucket for the sake we brought, etc... It just felt like amatures trying their hand at fine dining. \r \r Pros: Decent sushi close to home Cons: bad service more

Best Japanese food in Lower Bucks County 11/23/2007

Lower Bucks County has a dearth of great eating places, and International food is even harder to come by. If you're tired of pizza and pasta -- which is what most of the restaurants and Newtown and Yardley offer -- you're limited. \r \r Oishi is a breath of fresh air. It's one of the only -- if not the only -- place to get sushi and Japanese food around Newtown/Yardley. They renovated their dining room and added a small hibachi room (4 tables) and now the ambience is more ""date night"" than ""group dining."" But, the food remains yummy. I go here often for lunch because for $9, I get a great ""bento box"" that includes a choice of entree (beef/chicken bulgogi and shrimp tempura are great), a cone of white or whole wheat rice, fried gyoza, cold noodle salad, California roll, and lettuce salad. Oh, and the lunch includes miso soup to start. This is certainly one of the healthiest and filling lunch deals in town. \r \r As for dinner, Oishi is a BYOB, so you have to remember to bring the wine or beer when you eat there. And if you plan to go on a Friday or Saturday night you may need to call ahead to make reservations since the wait can be really long without one. Their sushi menu is extensive and creative, but it also includes the usual for those with less adventures palates.\r \r The service may be inconsistently slow or quick, so I wouldn't eat here on a Friday or Saturday night if you're in a rush to get to a movie. And, the tables are close together so it's not the most romantic restaurant for hushed conversations. But, if you want your sushi fix, or to take the kids to a hibachi place, this is the place to go. Pros: Great food, great menu selection Cons: Not enough parking on weekends, BYOB more

very bad place 10/28/2007

Bad service, very rude owner, and staff. In the middle of having dinner of 20 people the owner approached our table without any apology gave us a check and asked us to leave the table due to another reservation. We were shocked when we could not even finish our main course that was still hot. Are you for real? We can?t even have desert? We asked reply was NO, you have to leave. WOW! That was really rude and unprofessional, first time for me. What?s the worse that could happen people could wait for 10 minutes for the table, I had to before, and everyone had. We had the worse experience ever, at this place. We will never go there again. Not worth it. Hate this restaurant. When we got up to leave the staff did not even blink. I don?t have any other explanation to describe this experience than: selfish and r a c i s t. more
