Off Campus Telecommunications

I was pitched at the offer of free internet services hosted by Off Campus Telecommunications, however, I learned it the hard way after roughing it out for a year and realizing that thier service is anything but stellar. The lag prevents you having a decent connection and the service doesn't even support a lot of newer protocals to run voice features over MSN Messenger and such. more

OCT provides phone service to many off campus apartment complexes. They also provide Internet access in many of these. When I lived in Liberty Square, I used OCT for phone, calling card and Internet access. The phone and calling card worked pretty well. The card wasn't as cheap as the MCI or other cards you can get. The Internet access went out at the most inconvenient times -- like when I was trying to finish a school assignment in the middle of the night. Although they claim to have night tech support staff, they seemed to rarely answer the phone and when they did they usually couldn't solve the problem. Most people won't have a choice about whether to use OCT or not, but be aware of these issues. more

Most of the apartment complexes in the BYU area use Off Campus Telecommunications. I live in a house, but we were associated with a nearby apartment complex, so we had this phone system too. The cost each month was $35 with taxes. For this, you got Call Waiting, Caller ID (with an appropriate phone), and other features. The line did not have any long distance capabilites or voicemail. You have to pay extra to get a voicemail box set up. For the long distance, each individual person needed to be set up with a long distance calling card. I found the rates of a card I got at Costco to be much cheaper. The phone from this company is comparable to other standard phone companies. I switched because I got Vonage - lots cheaper since I get unlimited long distance and all. more
