Saturday Dim Sum Delight 7/6/2008

Went looking for some early Saturday morning, Los Angeles' Chinatown, Chinese food. Actually looking for some noodles and maybe a seafood soup. Happened upon this locale, passed it many times, went in once, thought the dinners were a bit pricey considering all the options, and passed. But today was both a surprise and a delight. Dim Sum Heaven! And that is about all that you will get at this hour of the weekend day. Don't expect to order fried squid, or Cod in black bean sauce. They are serving Dim Sum, and they are serious about it. Once seated, we were literally swamped by servers. The choices were made lightening fast. But not to complain. It was delicious, well-prepared, and efficiently fast and fun. The bill for two was a bit high, nearing $80, as compared to $40 at another well-established Dim Sum eatery located just North and down the street near the entrance to the freeway. But the food was better than good, which is what the other place serves-- so, all in all, it was worth the extra ducats. Pros: Lot of space. Happy environment. Hey, It's Chinatown, Jake! Cons: Mobbed by the staff. Let me breath between bites of Dim Sum!!! more

Better Hong Kong! 5/28/2007

I am American (born in Queens, New York) and married to a man from Hong Kong. We travel all over the world for both business and pleasure. A friend of mine recommended Ocean Seafood for lunch and boy did we love it. The atmosphere and food reminded us so much of Hong Kong. Yes, it was crowded but what do you expect. I did read several reviews and I agree with all the positive ones. It?s a great place to bring families and friends, (we had 10 people in our party). Our kids loved the live fish. You should really try their deserts. We had the bean curd and was it good. It was hot and incredibly authentic. You?ll love it. The only downside is the wait, but be patient and come early. Pros: the Deserts Cons: the Wait (it was Mother's Day) more

Dimsum 4/4/2007

Every once in awhile I must have some dimsum. It's like an addiction, something you know is not good for you but you still crave it. Ocean Seafood is not the best dimsum that I've ever had but it is still very good. The place is huge and still every weekend that I went we still have to wait to be seated. The service is very fast. The food are varied and there tends to be something new everytime that I went. Overall, it is always satisfying. However, the price tends to be on the expensive side in comparison to other dimsum places. Pros: Great dimsum, fast service Cons: Tends to be pricey for dimsum more

GREAT DIM SUM! 11/2/2006

i always come here for dim sum. the prices are great, the food is great. what more can you ask for? the waiters come around with carts and majority of them can't speak english, so you basically just point to what you want. it's usually packed when i come there for brunch on weekends. and also lunch time on the weekdays--business people. there's valet for 1.50, i think. Pros: great dim sum. Cons: none. more

good food best for party 8/19/2006

My family came from HongKong , we all love this place , when we had party , we allways went to Ocean Seafood, every time we got good service and best food in town . so happy . you don't need to believe me , just try it your self . Pros: best food good service Cons: Long waiting for sunday lunch more

Terrible food & Service 6/10/2006

My wife and family are Chinese and have had Chinese food all our lives in both Los Angeles and San Francisco and I can definitively say that this was the worst of this food we have ever had. Fried chicken was extremely dry, and the chow mein was not worth mentioning. To complete the experience, service was terrible. Overall, it was so bad that we made a special stop to buy some dessert just to clean our palate. Pros: Fortune cookie Cons: Food & Service more

Don't believe the hype 4/20/2006

Really confused at the high rating. Went with a bunch of friends because of the high citysearch marks, but our experience involved lousy service, pushy dim sum cart people and -- to be blunt -- bad food. The dim sum we tried was cold, not everything we ordered off the menu made it to the table, and what did was salted beyond reason, yet strangely bland at the same time... Attempts to resolve issues proved futile due to language issues, though it's hard to begrudge an authentic ethnic restaurant for bad English, I suppose. Maybe we were there at the wrong time, ordered the wrong food, wanted a beer too cold, etc., etc., but overall we have to give this a half-a-chopstick rating. Pros: Cute live fish Cons: Everything else more

Good food, service was insulting! 1/23/2006

Seated promptly. NO immediate walk-up server to get drink orders(they were never taken). Luckily, I was content with tea. Finally placed orders. 35 minutes later we get one of two appetizers and one of two entrees. Twice our second appetizer was given to other tables right near us. The second time, the server looked right at us and said,""Yours is coming"". When check arrived, and I paid, cashier counted the money AT OUR TABLE IN FRONT OF ME several times! I complained to the manager, he didn't offer to discount anything or make any concession at all. Just made ""ohhh""sounds. Spent 53.26 in there(no tip, believe me!) Pros: nice layout, roomy Cons: inept wait staff more

Some of the best chinese in LA 1/13/2006

I love this restaurant. Being a Chinese American, I've eaten at many Chinese restaurants throughout my life, but Ocean Seafood is probably my favorite of them all! The food is absolutely delicious - although they are known for their seafood, I have always ordered non seafood dishes (noodles, beef, vegetables such as string beans, fried rice) and have always been very happy with the food. I like that the restaurant doesn't get too noisy either during the week (although it is noisy during dim sum times on the weekend). Highly recommended - you cannot go wrong with this restaurant. Pros: food!, quick service, good parking Cons: noisy at dim sum more

My Chinatown Dim Sum Choice 3/25/2005

If I had to do dim sum in Chinatown, this would be my preference. The choices are many, the service quick and friendly, and huge bank of floor to ceiling windows makes the room seem bigger than it is. If you don't get here early, you'll have to wait on the mirrored stairwell with everyone else. It's one of the few places where you can get a great mango custard still. more

Yum, Yum Dim Sum! 10/14/2004

For the past five years, I've lived in Los Angeles and been to many Chinese restaurants, especially for Dim Sum. In my personal opinion, the dim sum at Ocean Seafood is great. Since moving here from Hong Kong, I've found Ocean Seafood to provide the authenticity and nostalgia of Hong Kong cuisines. Thats why I had to try Ocean Seafood for dinner. The food (especially the seafood) was good and the service was acceptable (never a dirty plate in front of me). I enjoyed the ""live steam shrimp,"" that was the worth the spike in my cholesterol level. Don't always believe what you read, just try it yourself. I suggest going early on Saturday or Sunday for Dim Sum, its worth the wait. If you really love to eat, Ocean Seafood is the place to be. more

know when to go 9/3/2003

i've been going to ocean seafood for years, and feel that it's only right to impart the key to successful dining at this place: don't bother after 12:30p. the dimsum gets cold (and picked over), the servers get snarky, and it's just not good times. before that hour, it's the best dimsum i've had in new york, chicago, or l.a., and the service, if not usually english-speaking, is a delight. the place is great for children, and if you don't try the scallop and cilantro dumplings, it's a crime. Pros: authentic cuisine, amazing seafood, great atmosphere Cons: don't go late more

Authentic, but not great 8/24/2003

Yes, the place is authentic, has a great selection of dim sum, and looks nice. On the other hand, I just can't get past the rude service and mediocre food. It's better than a lot of places out there, but generally overrated. The dim sum selection is the main reason I go back, but if I'm not looking for anything unusual in the way of dim sum, I can do a lot better closer to home. Pros: Selection Cons: Quality, Cleanliness, Service more

Great for Dim Sum 4/17/2003

We went here for Dim Sum and it was amazing. Loved their desserts. Food was amazingly tasty. And the price wasn't all that bad. Atmosphere was a bit noisey, but it's that way at all Dim Sum places. This is a DEFINATE recommendation. Pros: DIM SUM, prompt service more

dim-sum plates heated in microwave?!!! 3/29/2003

I never knew dim-sum plates are supposed to be heated in microwave. I went to this place after reading its good review in citysearch, found it to be very disappointing. Unlike some good dim-sum places I knew in northern california, the server just has a bunch of cold dim-sum plates all piled up in a cart, and when I ask if it's hot, she says she'll heat it for me. And after a minute it comes out hot. That leads me to suspect they're using microwave. Bad service, mediocre food. more

Fresh seafood, reasonable prices! 2/9/2003

We've been to Ocean Seafood a few times now, and it NEVER disappoints. Probably the best menu item (in price AND quality of food) is the House Special Crispy Noodle. For $10 (yes, you read that correctly, $10) you get a plate full of crispy, pan-fried noodles with just the right amount of sauce, and a variety of meats: scallops, shrimp, fish, calamari and beef. You can't beat the food, or the prices, but take a light sweater, because the air-conditioning is usually pretty high! Pros: FRESH seafood, FAST service, Inexpensive more

best ever 12/13/2002

Best food, best service, friendly faces, best value. Food is delicious and low prices, a lot of varieties, restaurant decoration is nice and warm, service is very good even during rush hour on weekends. Would recomend to everybody. Pros: best food, best service, best value more
