Accommodating and takes the time to explain things to those that are willing to listen. Sure he has an accent, but he is NOT difficult to communicate with. If you don't understand something he says, just say so! I have been with Dr. Nwapa for 2 years now and have NEVER had a problem and never had to wait more than 20 minutes to see him. If you want to see a professional, the go to Dr. Nwapa. If you want to see somebody that will laugh at your jokes go to open mic night at a comedy club! From reading some of these negative comments, I can see that people have some very unrealistic expectations. Probably one of the reasons they ended up here in the first place! Well...I'm off to visit his office now and didn't even need to schedule an appointment! Excellent staff and Doctor! more

Tough to comunicate with 6/29/2009

I have been seeing him for a while now.My biggest problem has alway been a personality clash. He has a different sense of humor and very little personality that I can relate to. I don't feel comfortable talking to him as he makes me feel stupid if I ask questions of trying to help myself. I would like to get a second opinion I think, because he has very much pigeon holed me and will not look for other symptoms or signs of other problems or lack of problems. I don't feel that I should be on all of this medicine, but I can't talk to him like I said. He is from another country which can make a huge difference in relating to others, he was raised completely different and that has got to spill over somehow when relating with his american patients. That is not a slur in any way, just a fact that I should have considered, as culture and background can be a big factor in relating to others. It is not easy for me to feel any connection to him and that is basically my problem that I have with him. I hope this helps anyone looking for a new doctor because it can be exhausting finding the right one that has that right balance of knowledge, bedside manner and the spirit of wanting to help the patient in a genuine way. He really needs to re-read the hippocratic oath and have the patient be his number one consideration with treating ALL of the patient, not just the medicine part of it. Pros: finally a nice office Cons: communication more

Very pleased with his service 6/10/2009

As an adult and knowing what I need, I found dr Nwapa very comprehensive. He listened to my concerns, asked the right questions to troubleshoot my pb, and didn't keep me hours in his office to understand my problem. Some people might want to stay hours talking, I like to stay a minimal time and get to the point of the problem. Dr Nwapa is exactly what I am asking for in a Doctor. He is very sweet, outgoing and decisive in his work ethics. I will recommend to anyone who don't need to expose their problems for many hours. Pros: nice area (5440 W sahara ste 202), easy to talk with Cons: waiting time more

Great Doctor & 1st Visit 3/12/2009

First, my daughter was seen within 15 minutes of our appointment time, and she was a new patient! The staff was courteous and helpful. Dr. Nwapa was very kind and listened intently. He spent almost 2 hours talking with my daughter, her father, and myself. He is a very compassionate doctor, but very honest. He doesn't sugarcoat things, and I like that quality. He addressed all my concerns and I felt he really cared about my daughter's welfare. The office was busy with patients, but he did not make me or my daughter feel rushed. He was very thorough in his examination and diagnosis of my daughter. I would highly recommend him as a doctor. Pros: Very pragmatic...took his time to explain everything Cons: Location is downtown more

We have worked with Dr. Nwapa for nearly four years and he has helped our children so much 11/10/2008

I just want to share that our experience has been incredible with him. I know that the office staff has an incredible workload so it makes it hard to get through sometimes but he is a great doctor.\r \r My children have made a tremendous amount of progress with him and treatment options that he has suggested that are behavioral as well as medicinal.\r \r They have even painted the place and added a playroom for the kids!\r \r :) more

MY WORST EXPERIENCE EVER 10/30/2008

I HAVE WORKED IN THE MEDICAL FIELD FOR 15 YEARS AND THIS WAS THE WORST DOCTOR I HAVE EVER MET... NOT ONLY IS THE OFFICE FILTHY AND IN THE WORST PART OF TOWN POSSIBLE, BUT THE STAFF WAS COLD AND UNFRIENDLY, AND THE DOCTOR WAS EVEN WORSE. MY 13 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER WAS HAVING MAJOR PROBLEMS. I CAME TO THIS DOCTOR FOR HELP. MY VISIT WAS RUSHED, I DIDN'T FEEL LIKE HE WAS LISTENING TO US AT ALL. AFTER BEING TOLD THAT SHE WAS TOO YOUNG TO DIAGNOSE WITH BIPOLAR DISORDER, HE SENT US AWAY. THE MENTAL HEALTH CARE IN THIS CITY IS PRETTY MUCH NONEXISTANT AND IT'S DOCTORS LIKE THIS THAT MAKE IT WHAT IT IS. I TOOK HER TO ANOTHER DOCTOR AFTER A STINT IN SPRING MOUNTAIN THAT DID DIAGNOSE HER AND START HER ON MEDS. I WENT AS FAR AS GOING TO A VERY POPULAR TALK SHOW HOST TO GET HELP. THIS IS ALMOST A YEAR LATER, AND SHE HAS BEEN AT A VERY WONDERFUL ACADEMY IN ST GEORGE UTAH THAT HAS TRULY HELPED HER. A THIRD PSYCHIATRIST ALONG WITH SEVERAL THERAPISTS AGREE THAT MY DAUGHTER IS BIPOLAR. SHE IS FINALLY GETTING HER MEDS WORKED OUT, AND GETTING BACK TO A NORMAL LIFE. I LEFT THAT OFFICE IN TEARS AND CRIED THE WHOLE WAY HOME. FOR SOMEONE WHO SPECIALIZES IN CHILDREN WITH PSYCHIATRIC DISORDERS HE FAILED MISERABLY. I MANAGE A PRIMARY CARE DOCTORS OFFICE IN GREEN VALLEY AND I ALWAYS DEFER PEOPLE FROM GOING TO THIS OFFICE, AND SEND THEM SOMEWHERE ELSE BECAUSE I NEVER WANT ANOTHER MOTHER TO EVER GO THROUGH WHAT I DID. IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A COMPASSIONATE UNDERSTANDING PSYCHIATRIST THIS IN NOT THE DOCTOR FOR YOU. I CAN'T URGE STRONGE ENOUGH THIS WAS A NIGHTMARE. Cons: EVERYTHING more

Talk about Anxiety and Stress ? Poor Scheduling 10/6/2008

I called Dr. Nwapa's office and scheduled an appointment. The first opening was not for two weeks. At that time, the person assisting me to schedule the appointment knew that I was going to be a ""new patient"". \r \r Because the appointment was scheduled during my normal working hours, I made arrangements at work to be off (without pay). \r \r Then, the morning of the appointment, Austin from his office, called me and left a message that Dr. Nwapa does not see ""new patients"" after 3:30 p.m. This does not help when one is already suffering from anxiety from everyday life. \r \r When I called back, I voiced my concerns about having to take off of work and then being contacted on the morning of the appointment that it had to be canceled. \r \r This was so wrong of the office staff. They wanted me to reschedule. However, when I informed them that I did not want to reschedule, the office girl hung up on me. \r \r Also, when scheduling the appointment, they did not tell me that he was an ?adolescent psychiatrist?. \r \r Angry and Upset Pros: NONE!!!! Cons: No respect for patient's time!!! more

Worth The wait 7/29/2008

Nwapa knows his stuff. He's a great man. He'll get you in on the drop of a dime. I know his office is in the worst part of town, and i know there is a big wait- but in this country you gotta wait for the good stuff.\r \r (The guy behind the counter, age 24-28, is really spacey, but cool.) more

Dr. Nwapa is a cool doctor 5/28/2008

I pretty much diagnoised myself before I went to his office. I looked up all my anxiety symptoms online and when I went in told him everything I was experiencing and told him I was pretty sure of what I had. But, he was very helpful - suggested I get bloodwork done to make sure it wasn't a thyroid condition. I feel comfortable around him. He's a snazzy dresser. The dude at the front desk is a little spacey but he's actually a sweet guy. I mean when you deal with ""crazys"" all day I don't blame him for spacing out a little. Sometimes I find it difficult scheduling appointments but if I am persistant he'll tell me even if I arrive at 5:15pm I'll still make my appointment. I like the down to earth atmosphere. It has sort of a dot com environment. I mean what do you expect for an office that takes every health insurance plan. I think it's well worth the price one pays. Service could be better but it's not unbelievely bad. They are reasonable and Dr. Nwapa is truly a good doctor and person. Pros: Dr. Nwapa is reasonable and sweet Cons: The spacey guy at the counter but he's sweet too. more

DR. NWAPA IS LOUSY, SO IS HIS STAFF. 5/28/2008

ALL DR. NWAPA DOES IS GIVE YOU PILL AFTER PILL AND DOES NOT DISCUSS ANYTHING WITH YOU RELATED TO YOU DIAGNOSIS. THE OFFICE IS IN POOR SHAPE MAKING IT MORE DEPRESSING FOR THOSE WHO LOOK FOR A MORE CHEERFUL OFFICE TO GO TO. IT SEEMS THEY PUT THIS PLACE TOGETHER IN ONE WEEK AND SAID LETS GET SOME CLIENTEL WHO CARES WHAT THE PLACE PLACE LOOKS LIKE. AS FOR HIS OTHER PARTNERS I SAW TWO OTHER DOCTORS @ ADULT MENTAL HEALTH IN CHARLESTON, AND THEY ALSO STINKS!!!! IT IS TERRIBLE THE MEDICAL SERVICE YOU RECEIVE HERE IN LAS VEGAS. IT TAKES A NEEDLE IN A HAY STACK LITTERALLY TO FIND A GOOD DOCTOR!! more

NOTIFICATION 4/14/2008

To all concerned patients and parents:\r \r Notify the Nevada State Board ....medboard.nv.gov\r Make sure to put everything on paper. Creating a paper trail showing the dates and times and make sure to also document the appt time and date, will be kept together in a file with State. Once enough people have complained about this physician, he will be audited and evaluated. If he does not pass the States criteria he will be suspended, license and all, until further notice. MAKE SURE TO NOTIFY STATE BOARD. You can make an official complaint online at the States website. I have heard and read enough complaints about this physician and it must be stopped. If we, the people, the patients, do nothing about it then nothing will be done and he will still be able to practice. Don't let Dr's like this be able to direct healthcare for you or your children!\r \r Sincerely,\r Concerned Voice Pros: Nothing... Cons: Everything to do with this Dr's office, i.e., Staff, bedside manner, Dr himself more

He is a great Doctor. 2/11/2008

I worked with this Doctor for a couple of years. I have experience with several M.D.s in town. This Doctor is one of the best in treating children. Pros: Doctor is great with children mental health disorders. Cons: Sometimes you have to wait. more

wonderful dr 3/8/2007

dr nwapa is a wonderful dr. it is true that you have to look past the grungy office, and the staff may look incompetent, but they are certianly not. they know their jobs. this office also has several other mental health drs and it is very busy. dr nwapa is willing to listen to my suggestions, he answers my questions, and is very straightforward. i was misdiagnosed as manic depressive and have seen many drs to straighten out my medication. on my first visit he asked me three questions and said that i was misdiagnosed. after 2 more visits, my medication was straightened out and i feel great. more often than not, i have to wait quite a long time, but i'm more than willing to. i normally have to bring my two young children as well, and dr nwapa is kind and patient with them. the visits are quick, but he doesn't make me feel as if i've been a second priority. i highly recommend this dr. Pros: very good dr, competent staff, patient with my kids Cons: parking leaves a lot to be desired, and long wait times more

I love Dr. Nwapa 11/22/2006

Dr. Nwapa has been my doctor for over a year now. He's a kind, generous, and caring doctor. He gives me his full attention, he LISTENS intently, he's patient, and you can just tell that he truly cares about his patients. He goes above and beyond what you would expect from any doctor. I definitely have a stigma about needing mental health care, Dr. Nwapa has never made me feel like a nut. He is a good doctor and a good person. Several times I've forgotten to make an appointment or forgot that I was going to run out of my meds, complete faults of mine, and he's taken my calls on the weekend & seen me when he was walking out the door, most doctors would make me wait until Monday. \r I love the staff, they work so hard! I'm sure it's not easy working with a bunch of nuts (like me) 40 hours a week. I've never seen a HIPAA violation in there. Every time I go to the office it IS packed with patients and I KNOW I'm going to wait, so I bring magazines or a book, or write while I'm waiting. I've turned it into sort of a break! I love the wait now, to be honest and obviously his other patients feel the same otherwise they wouldn't keep going back. Also, he used to have a walk in day, he doesn't have them anymore, so there is much less of a wait now. It never bothered me in the first place though. \r That's my 2 cents. Take him or leave him, that's less wait for me next time.\r \r edit: They've redone the office and it's actually really nice now! Pros: kind, generous, caring doctor who gives you his full attention and excellent care more

Massive HIPPA violations, Unprofessional 9/29/2006

From the moment I walked in the door, I added to my checklist of things to do ""FIND ANOTHER PSYCHIATRIST"". The building smelled awful, it was dirty, and the front desk people were not in any hurry to help you. They acted as if they didn't know what they were doing. After finally being checked in (and realizing they had massive privacy act violations going on before my very eyes - leaving patient information out for everyone to see), I realized that he had no less than 3 appointments scheduled for my daughter's SAME APPOINTMENT time. He was 1 hr and 30 minutes late for our appointment and only spent 20 minutes with us. \r \r When he called us in and began talking about background history, my husband had to stop him because our 11 year old daughter (and it was about her bio-mom) was sitting in the room. Most professionals have been very concerned that she should not hear anything that would be detrimental to her self-esteem or abilities. I took the initiative and sent her to the waiting room to wait until we could get past the negative history about her mom (the suicide attempts, drinking while pregnant, etc.). Our daughter has been hospitalized before and he completely ignored our previous doctor's diagnosis (even though it was confirmed by a TEAM of second opinion doctors). He was very adamant that she had been sexually abused although there is no evidence and the symptoms he was referring to are common in mood disorder patients. We have seen several psychiatrists during Brandi's treatment and none of them ever voiced these symptoms as evidence of positive sexual abuse. VERY close-minded doctor. \r \r I was thankful when the brief visit with Nwapa was over; I will never return to his office again - even if it means paying out of pocket for the visit. The only reason I stayed is that we needed a prescription refill. He and his staff were unprofessional, the office was not clean, and you felt as if you were just one of many animals being herded through. Pros: You can get a quick appointment. Cons: You won't get professional, invested care. more
