Lucky to have North Shore Music Theater 7/18/2011

I have taken my kids to some excellent permormances here and we have all have truly enjoyed it. There isn't a bad seat in the house and it's wonderful to be able to see such great productions and expose the children to theater without spending huge money and without having to deal with Boston traffic or parking. We're really looking forward to Footloose in a few weeks! more

Singing in the Rain 3/16/2009

We are from Nebraska, When we travel we usually find the theater district in larger cities to take in a play or two. In Boston we couldn't find anything in the metro, so we called and got tickets to "Singing in the Rain" at North shore. We had no idea where the theater was located, luckily the taxi driver got us there. The show was wonderful, seats were good. The couple we sat next to were very friendly and they even waited in the parking lot for an extra 45 minutes as we waited for the taxi to take us back to Boston. (That parking lot is really big and dark.) We thoroughly enjoyed our time in Boston and at the North Shore. We plan to go back in June and hope to find a good show there again. We are offended by bad language and overt sexual content on TV and in plays, so we will be looking for an pleasant time and great talent at North Shore when we return. We won't come if the show doesn't measure up to our standards. more

Tony Bennett Concert December 7, 2008 12/8/2008

After buying tickets for this show early enough to get good seats, we were terribly disappointed at the show. We sat in Section B in the third row and were looking forward to enjoying the performance. Evidently no one informed Mr. Bennett that it was a theatre in the round. At least 90 percent of the time, we had a wonderful view of his back. The whole time he directed most of his performace to one side of the stage. After spending over $200 for the tickets, $10 for parking, and eating at the restaurant (which was the only satisfactory part of the night), we could have enjoyed ourselves and seen more at home watching TV. WE are season ticket holders but this certainly left a bad taste. more

Contact 6/28/2008

I cannot believe what happened at the North Shore Music Theatre....just saw the musical (??) Contact and because we were told to stay until the second art to see the Girl in the Yellow Dress we held out breaths and stayed. The talent as usual was awesome..the story line in the first half on both presentations were very offensive and as much as the talent was great in the second half...I agree with all those that walked out after the first half. \r Worse musical and again (???) ever at the North Shore Theatre..\r only happy I didn't decide to take my grand daughter who is interested in any type of dance to it. more

Good if you like theater in the round 4/16/2007

The NSMT has a decent selection of plays and some interesting smaller concerts, but liking theater in the round is a must. There are no truly bad seats, but there are also no truly good seats either, since the stage revolves and people on stage must play to the entire circular theater. There will be times when the performers' backs are to you. I used to have season tickets to the NSMT, but switched to the Stoneham Theater several towns away. more

Really cool 11/22/2005

I loved going on field trips to the North Shore Music Theatre when I was little. The plays were amazing visually and engaging. There is not a bad seat in the house because of the location of the stage in the center. It is inexpensive and parking is plentiful. The musicians that perform there are not what I'm into at all, but the plays are great and the children's theatre is still fun. I always had a good time there. It is such a neat little place. more

real live theatre and not too far from home!!!!!! 11/5/2005

How can you not like seeing a real live theatre performance while not traveling more than 10 miles from home? It is great having this theater right in our "neighborhood". I have not seen the "all new" stage and seating yet. They had a fire last summer and everything has been renovated inside. I can't wait to see it. They have wonderful shows and great star actors. more

Great, great theater! 8/18/2005

I've been attending shows at this theater since I was a little girl and haven't experienced anything but 1st rate service! They typically offer B-list concerts, and classicial musicals (Nunsence, Forever Plaid, Oklahoma!, Sweeny Todd) all put on by amazing and aspiring actors(tresses). They even have shows tailored to children, which I've heard are a must see! The theater is kept in the BEST condition and there is always plenty of places to park. Seating is stadium style, and kept very close to the stage, so you always get a great view! The ticket prices can't be beat for Off -broadway! They offer seasonal passes for 6 showes for $100-300 total (depending on where you sit) and they also offer discounts for students and senior citizens and discounted shows that are not included in the 6 show package for members. If your familiar with the North Shore area, I highly recommend you check this place out! PROS: Great prices for the BEST shows, flawless actors and entertainers CONS: more

Excellent local theater 7/26/2005

The theater is round and small so there are no bad seats. They put on several different shows each year and attract great performers such as Bill Cosby and Kenny Rogers - just to name 2. more

Great place to see a show! 5/17/2005

They have musical theater and do several different types of shows throughout the year. Very entertaining usually. They also have celebrities that come in and perform every once and awhile. It is a nice small theater. more

North Shore Music Theatre: 50 years of history. 5/11/2005

NSMT is a wonderful example of how a small company can build into a multi million-dollar arts center for the entire area. Do be aware that their shows are in the round, which can be interesting, but isn't necessarily everyone's cup of tea. more

Editorial
  • The Scene
The most remote row of the 1,800-seat North Shore Music Theatre is still only 50 feet from the stage (the equivalent of seventh row at the Wang Center). Opened in 1955, the North Shore Music Theatre was one of the first permanent theaters-in-the-round built in the United States. This isn't a drafty, tented setup but a real nuts-and-bolts immovable structure; the site was given a major facelift back in the 1990s.

    The Skinny
Pre-theater dining can be done on premises (the restaurant is in a separate but attached building), but the fare is not the venue's strong suit. Good acoustics and superior sightlines--not a single seat suffers from an obstructed view--are. Pay parking (closer to the theater) is available for those who aren't inclined to walk from a distant space.
