Luxurious , wonderful dips, awesome quality, unique presentation, interesting tastes. 6/8/2008

From the outside I thought it was a coffee shop and we dropped in for a quite snack. The place is beautiful yet very comfortable. The bread came with the two customary olive oil bases, which seems so had to find anymore. My roastbeef sandwich had so many much flavor, I was really surprised. The cigars (beef in a fried dough) were fun, tasty and I so enjoyed the dips that came with them. Even the fries were presented in a packaged cone. Great menu. I didn't want to leave. Pros: Great Atmosphere Cons: Service was a tad off more

A clean fresh taste for traditional chinese fare 2/15/2007

I live in Monterey Park and I'm surrounded by great Chinese food, so I wasn?t expecting much when my friend decided to celebrate his birthday there but Shenwah really blew my socks off. What really impressed me was how clean and light yet well flavored the food was. Most Chinese restaurants you find today are excessively greasy and made from poor quality ingredients to keep cost down. Shenwah was completely the opposite of this. We had a large group, which was awesome cause I got to try a lot of stuff. The walnut shrimp as a light crystal brown and came with a delectable walnut mayonnaise sauce spruced up with some cut carrots and peas. The shrimp egg rolls where fresh, light and crisp accompanied by a sweet and sour sauce and the traditional Chinese yellow mustard. A health portion of filet mignon with peppercorn sauce came centered on a pristine white china platter much like you would find in good French food. It was really good. The House special fried rice came with chicken and shrimp lathered in a rich brown sauce sitting on top of some vegetable fried rice? kind of like how you used to put gravy on your mashed potatoes. One of the guys order the chicken culet which looked really good to but I didn?t get to try it cause it was all gobbled up before it got to me. For the vegetarians, I ordered a plate of the crispy tofu fritters with mixed vegetables, which came in slightly spicy clear sauce. I?ve got a craving for it right now. We topped it off with some combination fried noodles and my favor? the mu shu rolls-the Chinese equivalent of burritos. The skin was a little thick but very fluffy so it went well with the stir fried vegetables, egg and plum sauce. I want to try the salmon in garlic sauce next time but since I live two hours a way it maybe a while before I get back to Shenwah (although I?m sure I?ll be back). Someone go try it for me and let me know how it is. Pros: Great food, prompt service, nice quite diner spot Cons: Bit on the pricey side for chinese food but you get what you pay for. more

Expensive tastes at a deliciously affordable price 10/14/2006

Probably one of the valley's best kept secrets for chinese food. So far all the dishes I've tried there have been delicious- shrimp egg roll, pan fried dumplings, filet mignon with peppercorn sauce, braised shitake mushrooms with bok choy, salmon with garlic butter sauce, orange chicken, braised lamb shank, and seaweed salad. For comfort foods you can't beat the combination pan fried noodles, large wor wonton soup, or chicken breast cutlet with lemon sauce dip. Pros: Affordable, nice ambience - causal dress code, beer / wine / sake Cons: Service is a bit slow when it gets super busy. Parking fills up fast on busy nights. more
